I am going to the US Open starting this Sunday through Wednesday and we would like to play on Sunday afternoon/night on some outdoor public courts. We are staying on Lexington ave. Where can we play that is close by and that is open to the public and you don't need a permit? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you can buy single permits at pa ra gon sports on union square for $7 each i think. You'll have a hard time finding a public court in manhattan that doesn't require a permit.

Most private clubs don't require a membership to play, but tend to be exceedingly pricey in manhattan.

Thanks for the info NYC. Penpal...I am staying at 501 Lexington Ave in the Roger Smith Hotel. Is that anywhere near Union Square? Are there courts close by to there that we can buy the permits for?

Best bet is the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club, where you can pay by the hour. Indoor, Har-Tru. Take the F train/subway to the Roosevelt Island stop, then walk towards the Queensborough Bridge 5 minutes and you're there.

Don't waste your time with single-play tickets - the city's public courts tend to be crowded and will require 2 trips to play (1 to reserve, another to play later that day). Plus, there aren't any near the Roger Smith.
