Germany has a slew of promising young girls invading the upper echelon of the womens game now. Which one of Lisicki, Goerges, or Petkovic will be the next Steffi Graf.

Steffi Graf coming back at 41 has a better chance of being the next Steffi Graf than any of these scrubs

This is a horrible thread. Like saying every upcoming Swiss player (are there any?) should be the next Federer, every upcoming Spaniard should be the next Nadal, etc. All 3 I think could be top 20 players (Petkorazzi is already) but there's no need to say any of them will be the next Steffi.

I love the poll threads which are self-answering to please the poster who created the thread.

    So amusing.

Anke Huber was touted as the "next Steffi."

She had a very respectable pro career, but came no where near Graf.

Germans would like to see the next Steffi Graf or Boris Becker. Anke Huber and Merlene Weingartner were once touted as the next Steffi Graf, and Nicolas Kiefer and Tommy Haas were both once touted as the next Boris Becker.

Not sure about being the next Steffi, but i was impressed with Petkovic's play recently, don't know how long she can do the dance without ******* off other players though.

Petkovic certainly has the talent to be the next Steffi Graf. If she can stay healthy and continue improving it seems likely.

None of the above though I like Lisicki most of them. No young WTA player I've seen so far have that fierce burning fire in them you saw in people like Chris, Steffi, Monica, Serena, Henin. All these girls today reach a comfort zone and are content to stay there.

Where is the "none of the above" option? No, in fact the missing poll multiple choice should be titled "no way, not even a slight eenie meenie tiny monkey's ass of a chance". Believe it or not right now in Germany (in fact in general here in Europe) long-ago-retired Steffi is the only tennis face that still appears in TV programs and magazines and in new ads and commercials.

Basically no other "home" player exists as far as the country is concerned. In fact they have significantly far more interest in foreign (or rather Dutch WAGs who speak good or bad German in a funny accent than in slamless "sub top-20" level WTA players with a German passport.

I love Petkovic, but no, she doesn't. I doubt Petkovic will ever win a single Major, although if she continues to play the way she has been, she could reach a final.
Petkovic is a very, very good player, and quite likeable. Graf is arguable the greatest to ever play the game. A large gulf between the two.

Petko is the best of the three but Graf potential? No. That's not even fair.

If we are talking about becoming a very well liked player, top ranked in the country for years, with a chance of winning a slam, then sure. I think Andrea is up to that task.

EPIC LOL... The sooner these girls stop being mentioned in the same breath as Steffi, the better for their own careers. Each of them is capable of having a nice, solid career, maybe reaching and staying for a few seasons in the top 20, nothing more.

    Right. that comparison is unfair.

there was a girl called the next steffi at very young age. her name is scarlett werner. she couldn't stand the pressure and retired at age 18 or so without ever being in the top200.

Where's the "none" option? You should have just asked which young German player has the best chance of winning a Slam.

Exactly; the wish (from fans or the sports media of a country) to see the "next" version (in terms of success and/or playing style) is nothing new. When McEnroe and Connors were no longer a factor, the media cried " where are the next..." So, your OP was valid and has history to back up the question.

I was terribly inconsiderate in my last post. As penance, let me pose a similar question:

"Which of the young Americans is on her way to being the next Serena Williams?"

    a. Melanie Oudin
    b. Christina McHale
    c. Coco Vandeweghe
    d. Sloane Stephens
    e. There are far too many of them to list here, all with infinite potential

Yes, who would be able to deal with this deadly combo - Steffi's slice BH and her murderous forehand?
Maybe Serena in her 2002/03 and Henin in her 2004-07 form now and then.

    But else??

To clarify, none of these women will ever get to Stephie Graf's level on the tour. They all just happen to be German. It's like asking which of the Americans currently playing will be the next Williams? Answer: none of them.

Well when was the "Peak Steffi" if not then. Monika was 16 years old in 1990.

I don't see peak Steffi coping with peak Monika which we never got to see due to despicable act of one Steffi Graf fan.

ROFL they'll not be next Steffi but the 3 can have very promising careers... Andrea might win a slam someday... close after Julia then Sabine... the tour would be spectacular if this infernal trio played their best all together.

Peak Steffi had five (!) seasons with winning percentages in the 96-98 percent range. Seles in her two best seasons ever was only at 92-93 percent.

BTW, in those two peak seasons of hers Seles lost 3 of 4 matches against Steffi, two of them badly.
