I break Synthetic Guts every 10 hours of playing. And always, the cross breaks first at around the sweet spot (usually at the lower part of the sweet spot - closer to the handle).

Does this tell something about my game or is it just normal? One of my acquantances told me that he breaks the mains easier.

i think it depends of the player's individual game.

in college, one of the guys i knew was a spin monkey and always broke his mains first. i hit much flatter and broke crosses first.

i think the fact that it broke in the sweetspot is a good sign! :)

In a synthetic or multi, I always break the mains first - now that I use poly mains and multi crosses, I break the crosses - although really tension loss etc. makes it unplayable before then usually

I always break a syn gut cross in my hybrid. Cant speak for a fullbed of syngut or poly as i have only ever used hybrids.

With so many players using hybrids these days, its tough to say. Poly mains with syn. or multi crosses--usually the cross breaks first.

Often, with only a multi, the cross with fray and break first. Others, I've found that the mains usually break first.

I have never broken a cross in my life. Always mains. Every picture I have seen break is a main. I cannot image why a cross could break first, unless you are playing with a soft cross string.

Agreed. I've never seen broken crosses unless it was in a hybrid with poly in the mains. I use different setups for different racquets, one all syn gut the other a hybrid w/poly mains syn gut crosses. I break strings all the time and I've only broken a cross once-usually the poly goes dead before the crosses break.
I've also personally never broken a poly string, so maybe I just don't hit hard enough.

    In my experience,

Full job of synth or poly, always main first
Full Job of multi, crosses first

Hybrid of poly mains and multi crosses, crosses brakes first.
Hybrid of poly and synth, mains first.

Absolutely agree, I break my crosses at about the same time the poly goes dead. Between 6-12hrs of playing time.

For me, whenever I use a hybrid I always break the crosses first. On a full bed of a string I usually always break the mains.

In a regular full job, I'll always break the mains first. However, in a hybrid, I have broken crosses first (gut mains with X-1 Bi phase crosses, e.g.)

I always break crosses (dunlop mw 200g strung with MCS). 2-3 weeks ago, three crosses broke at once after heavy fraying. I can't remember ever breaking a main in 5-6 years, in fact the mains are always in decent shape when my crosses break.

Most strings I break the mains first. There are a few where the crosses go first and I don't know why.

When I used gut/poly this summer, my crosses always showed visible thinning and eventually broke first. I never actually got to break the gut which was VS then Tonic

The only other time my crosses broke first was when I used Tier 1 Fire Wire 1.20 mm.

I can not recall any time I break cross first. It's always mains and above center of string bed.

OP should include a poll... Kind of hard to keep track of who brings what with just messages/posts.

    If I'm using multifilament, crosses.

Hybrid, whichever one is the least durable of the 2 breaks. I play with gut mains and poly crosses, so therefore, gut goes before poly's.

I've never broken cross strings, even with hybrids. It's always mains slightly above center, which is where I hit most of my shots.

If the strings are similar type, almost everyone will break the mains first. If you are always breaking the crosses in the sweetspot first (not just random poly breaks at the edge of the frame), you probably are hitting with sidespin. That would cause the crosses to move against the mains.

Absolutely not. See below, all my strings end up like this. The crosses never seem to move anything (note that the pattern is very dense which obviously doesn't help) but the mains do tend to end up all over the place after a good rally / few points. String is pros pro hi-tec multifibre strung at 26kg.

If you're snapping crosses first, then chances are you're hitting a lot of topspin. (The mains snapping back and forth and in the case of multi's, essentially shaving the outermost layer of the multi cross)

Right now I am playing full poly RPM blast and mains are breaking.

When I was using a hybrid it was always multi main poly cross. Multi would break as expected.

For years, my mains always broke first, but this past year I've been using a new string (MSV Focus Hex), and for whatever reason, I went through this entire reel breaking nothing but the crosses, always in the same spot, very near, but not exactly the sweet spot. Each time I could see the crosses being shaved down so they always broke like clockwork. The mains still get cut into deeply, but I guess with this type of string, the crosses get shaved down faster than the mains get cut through.

I break strings on average about once a week, so anywhere from 4-8 hours of hitting, and for the first time today in almost a year, I finally broke a main again! I'm on my second reel of the same string so I'm really perplexed why this happened. I still don't know why the crosses were breaking because prior to this string, I couldn't even think of a time when my crosses broke first, and now I'm scratching my head why the main broke first this time.

i use full poly and always break a cross (from thinning). if windshield-wiping is done properly, then the ball will travel on the cross longer, causing lots of abrasions on the crosses to thin them down.
