Which TW Leather Grip to get?

    Hi,

Some advice needed please, from those loyal TW leather grip users.

I see good reports on these grips as opposed to slightly indifferent reports on other brands, and I want an unbranded leather grip, I thought I should go for the TW one. But which?

I am decided on the 25mm width but cannot decided which thickness to get. Bearing in mind it will cost me £10 for delivery, I'd really like some advice.

My current grip is synth and about 1.8mm thick. I will add an overgrip to the leather (0.6mm) but don't really want to increase my grip size too much. I know leather doesnt compress like a synth.

My guess is that the 1.3mm plus overgrip will bring it up to 1.9mm but less compression and so will feel a touch larger, bearing in mind that a 1.8mm synth compresses to actually be smaller when gripped.

I think 1.5mm will add a touch too much, bearing in mind it will be a non-compressing pure 1.5mm, plus 0.6mm.

Who else has switch to TW leather and which thickness have they used to just add a touch more thickness but not as much as going up a grip size?

(p.s. I am using leather for the feel, not the additional weight it brings which I accept and understand :))

A further question to maybe help get the answer I am after...

Which TW leather grip is most like the Gamma leather grip in terms of thickness? 1.3 or 1.5?

    Thanks

i use the wide and thick TW grips and haven't noticed any significant increase in grip size (not sure i've noticed any at all actually), fwiw.

Thanks tbug, interesting. I will be using an overgrip and was considering the 1.5 but I'm not sure if the lack of compression will make the grip too thick.

I think the 1.3 would be closer to the Gamma, softer though.

Just a small note on your 'non-copressing' comment - the leather grips do compress over time too, perhaps not to the extent of some of the spongier synthetics, but they certainly do settle in and compress.

I use the 1.3mm TW leather grip with a Wilson Pro Overgrip. I like the thinner leather grip as it really enhances/emphasizes the bevels of the grip and for me improve the feel and connection to the racquet.

I don't want to go thinner than the feel of a 1.9mm synth once I have leather plus an overgrip. Can anyone tell the difference between 1.3 and 1.5mm though?

Has anyone got any photos of how the TW 1.5 and 1.3 look when installed? I'd like to see what the ridges are like.

    Thanks

Ask away, you're more likely to get better answers from the TT collective rather than just me. After all, I'm asking questions too lol.

I want to get a TW leather grip but don't know if the 1.5 will make the grip feel too big or the 1.3 will be too small. The thing with a leather grip is, once it's on I want to just leave it on and not keep buying new ones and having to change it.

like i said....IMO the thicker grip is best. it will compress some but not as much as synthetic. i feel like mine are proper sized after some use, if not smaller than a new synth puffy ridgy thing.

I use supergrap, but i'm not real picky about OG, i just like the solid base layer of leather.

So in reality, I could expect an unwrapped 1.5 grip to be a touch thinner when wrapped and settled in anyway, say 0.2mm? Which would suggest that 1.5 plus overgrip will keep my original grip size? The 1.3 might shrink the grip size?

Is that because it reduces the grip size so bevel feel is more prominent?

When you think about it, it's funny how such a tiny tiny difference in thickness is noticeable :)

This is kind of off-topic tho. By any chance, have you weighted the installed leather grip on your racquet? Tried to find the info on the grip specs thread but can't find it

The only way to be certain is to take off your original grip weigh it then weigh your new leather grip subtract for the difference.

I then start out adding that amount of lead evenly to the hoop. I start at 3/9. You might experiment with 10/2 or even 12 o lock depending on frame and what you like/ want to accomplish. I find the 1.3 reduces grip size. I have 3 4 5/8 frames and I use the TW 1.3 to make them play smaller. All my 4 1/2 grip frames I use babolat leather which I think maintains the same grip size. I almost never use an overgrip only a partial in extremely hot/ humid conditions.

.... Of course if u want the frame more headlight you should hit it first without the lead. I always prefer to maintain the factory feel - just a little heavier.

    Ymmv of course....

I asked b/c I would like to match my racquets. I would like to add lead on the pallet first before I regrip it with leather. I'm using a different brand anyway so... :)

It would be my first time using leather grips (for some reason). Can you "pre-stretch" a leather grip? Like what we do on overgrips? To further reduce the grip size?

For a leather grip to stay tight and smooth you should pull very tightly while applying it. It definitely will reduce grip size a little bit if you pull tightly. There are threads about this and tell you exactly how hard they would suggest pulling.

I know, thats the funny thing. When you look at how small 0.2mm is, its hard to believe it makes a difference, but it does.

So the 1.3 will actually reduce grip size, even with an overgrip?

I always use an overgrip, I would love to be able to just use bare leather, but my hands are just too dry....it slips like crazy.

So if I want to maintain the same grip size I should be going for the 1.5mm, is that right?

    Yes,

1.5 mm + overgrip = synthetic grip (same grip size)

    I think...
