I don't watch enough of women's tennis, but Venus is very hard to beat when she's at net.

I'd give men's backhand to a one-hander, maybe Gasquet or Gaudio.

    I'd give volleying to Henman.

Does Henman even volley that well anymore though. The times I have seen him play he pretty much sucks now as a player, and I am surprised he still plays.

Come to think of it I could have given the backhand to Gasquet as well. Gasquet vs Djokovic in a backhand to backhand rally, one hander vs two hander would be interesting.

Gaudio like Henman pretty much sucks these days as a player these days, and I doubt either could be the best at anything anymore.

Those are good as well, and definitely make sense. Just curious if there is a reason you think Roddick has a better 2nd serve then Karlovic. I am not saying you are wrong or anything. Or was it they were just really close and you happened to pick Roddick, or was it something more specific.

You are right the mental game goes to Serena by a humungous margin. Henin, Sharapova, Venus, are considered the next mentally toughest and Serena romps them all in that area, as she has proven when playing them even.

Karlovic's first serve comes down around 123 mph on average; they are usually flat bombs that are hard to return because of the angle and speed they are coming from. His second serve averages around the 110 mph mark and is still fairly flat and I've observed the reduction in speed gives other pros more of an opportunity to make a good play on it. Roddick averages about 102 mph but his delivery is absolutely loaded with spin and is very tough to attack. It's why Karlovic is 1st on the tour in first serve points won (Roddick second) but only 19th in second serve points won (Roddick third).

OK thanks. Actually I did not realize those second serve stats but if Roddick is 3rd in second serve points he must have the best second serve in the game after all, since no way is his ground game to back up the serve anywhere close to that right now.

Volleying wise to Mauresmo or JH. But at the net Venus is hard to beat because she does hit those swinging volleys which knock out the opponent instantly

Well several of the best doubles S&V's also play singles, such as Bjorkman and Mirnyi. To think Federer has the best volley in the game today is to not really understand what a great volley is. Granted he can hit them pretty well compared to most, but his is not the best in the game.

I suppose that is why 5 of the 7 posters so far either picked Federer or tied Federer as being the best volleyer in the game today.

He doesn't go to net enough and I've seen him brick too many forehand volleys. His wrist has a tendency to go limp.

He's definitely one of the best at net, but it's hard to put him above some of the doubles specialists out there who live at the net.

Whether Federer is the best at the net of the entire tour or net he is by far the best in the top 10 right now. Nadal, Roddick, Davydenko, nobody else even comes close.

Probably a rehash of what someone else said but:

    Men
    First Serve: Karlovic/Federer
    Second Serve:Roddick
    Forehand: Federer/Nadal
Backhand:Gasquet, although Safin and Djokovic are right behind him
Movement:Nadal, then Federer, then Davydenko. Blake on hard courts is shocking
Return of Serve: Not long ago this was owned by Hewitt, now is Fed/Nadal territory
Volleying: *Groan* Not much to choose from these days, but Baby Goran can do one thing Big Goran couldn't.
Mental game: Gotta go with Rafa

    Women
    First Serve: V. Williams
Second Serve: Dementiava ;). No Venus again
    Forehand: S. Williams
    Backhand: Henin
    Movement:Henin
    Return of Serve: Jankovic maybe:confused:
    Volleying:Mauresmo
Mental game:S. Williams, but Sharapova would not have gotten where she is if she were not tough mentally.
