I think Samantha Stosur or Sabine Lisicki have really good second serves. What makes a second serve good speed, kick, depth? How can a player improve the second serve? It seems a lot of WTA players just spin the second serve. I don't see a lot of WTA players take a chance and go for a big second serve.

Integrity (meaning it is not automatically the weaker serve) and variety, which comes from experience enough to use it as a weapon that keeps opponents guessing, not just get it back into play. Lisicki has a strong 2nd serve, and if she's focused, can deliver winners for some time.

Dunno...Haven't noticed anything remarkable about Lisicki's second. Her first serve is great when she makes it (she's usually like 50%), but her second seems drastically weaker.

Not sure I'm remembering correctly, but when Lisicki beat sharapova at Wimbledon a coue years ago, didn't she have a second serve ace on match point (or at some other critical juncture)? She was willing to take risks to win that day and it paid off. It was awesome! Not sure if she's consistent with it, though. Maybe a stats guru will weigh in on it.

Lisicki's second is ok, nothing special. It does probably have more spin than most women's 2nd, but that's about it. Stosur's is miles better than most women's second serve and it's better than Serena's. Good second serves are about spin, movement (enough pace+spin so that the ball's not just sitting there) and placement (so that you're not just serving to the same spot every time).
Most WTA players lack spin on their seconds and therefore, don't have much movement on their serves. Serena has the spin and placement of Stosur but not the movement. But she's by far the best 1st serve hitter.

I will still take Serena's second serve over any of them when all is said and done.

I think Sam USED to have the alpha second serve in WTA, but not any more.
Seems she's hitting more topspin second serves than twists, and her competition got used to returning twist serves.

I would take Serena's second serve over the first serve of 75% women on tour. She really is head and shoulders above the rest.

Any second serve that goes in on the WTA is a good one.

LOL:) I agree! Just like recreational tennis, a decently paced/placed second serve is a bonus,...or just getting it in works. DFs are the worst way to lose points.

Serena. She can do slice and kick serves efficiently on second serves.
