I swear, it seems like no one could get as many balls back or just do the extremes to get a ball back. Please discuss.

    Sanchez-Vicario could run down anything.

she was very good, as was Sanchez Vicario, Seles, Austin, and of course, Ms. Evert. And, anyone recall Manuela Maleeva, the human back board of tennis?

Austin was great from side to side - not so much moving forward.

Sanchez-Vicario's doggedness was kind of intimidating. Players made errors because they felt forced to try for perfect winners as she would run everything else down. Plus she had a very combative, aggressive attitude on the court.

AmandaCoetzer. 5' tall, no serve, ran everything down, got up to top 30's.

Actually Coetzer got to a career high ranking of 3 in the late 90s.

I don't think of evert in terms of defence, vcario yes. What was particularly impressive re the latter was that she rarely guessed incorrectly where her opponent would hit a smash.

Players with weak offensive games play the best defense, because that's all they have.
Serena don't need defense. Have you watched her play lately?
Maria don't need defense, but she does, if she wants to beat the top players.
Clisters can hit a BIG offensive ball, but she's aging (aged), and playing good defense is one way to hold back the hand of time.

Serena does need defence. Did you watch her play at The Australian Open?

Yes but Serena has made obvious through the years that she CAN play defense if she wants to. Someone who completely lacked defensive skill would be Davenport.
