Why did Federer wear a sportscoat on Centre Court today?

I was watching Federer's 1st round match today against Gasquet, and Federer walks out onto Center Court in a beige sportscoat (i.e., like the jacket from a suit). It was weird seeing him in a sportscoat over his Nike tennis shirt and shorts underneath. It just looked so out of place. Why didn't he just wear a track jacket or warm-up suit like most other tennis players do?

if you were no 1 in the world and had won wimbledon for the last three years i would wear whatever the hell i want because i would know(not being big headed that i was the best on grass.
also all the pro have big bucks and can afford to splash out on a jacket

In the bygone years, a long, long time ago, everyone wore a jacket when they went onto center court. Part of the tradition that makes Wimbledon what it is. Roger is very cognizant of tennis history.

When he took it off and put it on his seat it reminded me of a man just walking into his office casually, taking of his jacket, and placing it on the back of his chair ready for business.

And that's what Roger's all about, the court is his place of work.

i will agree with tht. when federer walks onto the court he looks at it as if it is another day of work, where as when he comes to wimbledon is is magnificent. unstoppable.

I have pictures of my dad when he played on the navy tennis team, all the players are wearing blazers, and they look very smart indeed.

i tell ya, this man has class. its like he's coming in to another day at the office. just too stylish. i wanna see people at my local tennis club start doing that, it would be funny.

i think he's kinda honoring the old days, when the pros wore pants and really nice clothes. im half expecting him do the whole vintage attire in 2nd round.

and how can he get away with this? cuz he's roger f***ing federer.

If it were any cooler, he would have worn a cable-knit v-neck under the blazer.
And if Roger were any cooler, he'd be Lew Hoad.

Opening match on Center Court Wimbledon, you've got to look classy. Just a reminder to everyone in the audience that he's one of the greats.

I doubt Nike would ever market it to the public. Nike bends over backwards to make their top names happy. Remember when they made those black leather boots for Serena to walk out on court with at the USOpen?

Would many people actually buy this and wear it for tennis if Nike offered it for sale?

Personally, I think it's silly and looks out of place on a tennis court.

It would be ridiculous to wear that unless you're playing on Wimbledon Centre Court. Imagine someone walking onto the local high school tennis courts wearing that.

All that was missing was a crown..or does that appear in week 2? The jacket, nice as it is, seems ostentatious to me.

Because he is too cool and by having a personalised jacket he looks classy with the others line judges and umpires in there classy jackets.

Then by weaing shorts and a bandana and going out to play tennis in it he made a classy jacket cause him to look, well, you know!

I think it's cool and not a bit ostentatious. These aren't leather boots or super long hoop earrings or a bodysuit. It used to be tradition and Federer is a respectful guy.

It does look a little silly to see him put it on after he wins a match and walks out of the stadium...especially since he's wearing shorts, but it's still cool.

Did he wear his jacket today? I though I heard one of the talking heads saying that he was only going to wear it for his first round match.

Back in I believe it was 1983, Trey Waltke wore long white pants and a white button down to play in, reminiscent of what was once worn.

jacket looks sharp as all hell. could probably only get away with it at wimbledon, which kindof exists in a time warp in many ways.

someone on the thread mentioned trousers. wasn't there some no-name who came out in a white shirt and off-white trousers, back in the day?? stylin!
