Because they look better than short socks, and make your legs look better. I think the pros would have to wear long socks so that they prominently display their sponsors logo too... but that's just a guess.

Tradition. Many of these pros are adults from the 70's-80's who wore crew socks (that's what you refer to as long) who wore crews as kids. We all don't wear crews, but it's all a matter of choice.

I only wear long socks on red clay, otherwise I wear the short ones.

I think the long ones look dorky, but on the red it is better than the alternative.

mens tennis players have worn long socks since the creation of the game. that hasnt changed, and many, such as myself, think wearing long socks is proper tennis etiquette

lol. this thread makes me laugh. i had a non-tennis playing friend come over the other day and he was saying the same thing" "why do tennis players wear such long socks!" showstopper is right, they are only crew length (which is far from "long" as far as sock lengths go). i told my friend to take a look at an nba game. some of those guys wear really long socks! and they are far from nerdy.

this whole wearing short socks so it looks like you're not wearing socks at all look is fairly recent. you lose all cool points at my gym if you wear crew socks. but i couldn't tell you how this has come about.

I agree that for almost everything else, short socks look better. But for tennis, it just doesn't look right

Because it's normal. Low socks and no-shows are for women who want to make their legs look longer and sexier (or men who want to do the same).

    ankle socks are bad because:

    1) You are prone to cuts around the ankle with your shoes rubbing against it.

    2) They look awful.

Mardy Fish wears low cut socks. Take a look.

In general I don't like crew socks, but for some reason I think they look better for tennis. Although I still wear my low cut socks though because I'm too lazy to buy crew socks.

I totally agree with the etiquette thing, but also in my case, where I live and play (Spain) clay is the most common surface, and longer socks help keep your feet and inside the shoes cleaner.

I always rock the high socks for tennis, but I personally think the no show look is the best way to go for any other occasion. You just look silly if people can see your socks above your ankle...

FYI, I am one of the most fashionable tennis players in my area. I literally have hundreds of matching tennis outfits, including shoes. :)

Even Federer wears crew socks and he's the most fashionable pro tennis player around with his own custom made and fitted signature clothing line.

But why? I think you look silly if people can see your entire leg all the way down to your shoes, just like what the girls do. I think it's as silly as seeing a guy wearing a short skirt.

What sports do the athletes wear short socks?

In tennis, they wear longer socks.
In baseball, they wear longer socks.
In football, they wear longer socks.
In basketball, for the most part, the players play with longer socks.
In soccer, they wear longer socks.

Track and field is one where they were short socks. So, I guess the question is--why are the track and field athletes so weird to wear short socks? :)

imo, if you are tall (6 feet or taller) crew socks would look great.
but if you are 5 feet 5 or shorter, it's better that you wear the low cut socks.

don't you agree, or do you think that anybody should wear the crew socks regardless of their height ? :)

Why Do Tenis Players Wear Long Socks?

    Tradition.
In an earlier era there was not the variety of men's socks there is now. There were white crew socks for tennis period.
    Women wore shorter socks.
    The tradition continues.

As a soccer player I don't think tennis socks are long at all. No shows offers no ankle protections but most important of all if you need to wear an ankle brace/support it is always a good idea to have socks under it for comfort and keeping excessive sweat on the brace.

the program doesn't take responses that are less than 10 characters, so people put in "10 char" to fill up the space.
