I was once Young and Naive also. Just what the Tobacco companies were targeting. Marketing back in the 70's was all about smoking looking cool. I thought it looked cool too. Boy was I a sucker (and still am) I've been sucking on these cancer sticks for 25 years. Let me let you in on something.

    Lung Cancer is not cool!

    Heart Disease is not cool!

    Yellow Teeth is not cool!

    Bad Breath is not cool!

Smoking around your children is not cool!

A home smelling of smoke is not cool!

Your vehicle smelling of smoke is not cool!

Spending $3000 a year on cigarettes is not cool!

Wheezing on the Tennis Court in between points is not cool!

Being out of breath during sex IS NOT COOL!

If you want to look cool buy a Sergio Tacchini Polo, flip up the collar and cruise the strip in your Dad's convertable. That my young friend is cool, but SMOKING IS NOT!

HE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKE OUT IS NOVEMBER 17TH 2005. BE THERE - BE COOL!

Another "witty" comment from the King of Cool. I've seen other people get banned from here for alot less. Maybe with any luck one of the Mods will see your "contributions" to the TT forum. Or better yet maybe one of your parents will see. Your obviously not here to use the forum for what it is for.

Maybe you didnt see these requirements when you signed on here.

    TW Message Board Policies

    1. No obscene or profane language is allowed. This one’s pretty easy – none of the "Big 7" dirty words you used to not be able to say on television are allowed. Our moderating filter is designed to catch these words. Any that slip through will be deleted. Repeat offenders will be asked to discontinue. Persistent offenders will be blocked from the boards.

    2. No personal attacks or abusive language is allowed. If you have a problem with someone, take it off of Talk Tennis. Antagonistic behavior will not be tolerated. Debating issues and opinions is fine, but flaming and insulting won’t be tolerated.

Tennis Warehouse reserves the right to block access to Talk Tennis for anyone who chooses not to abide by the policies listed above. Thanks for your cooperation and participation on Talk Tennis.

    I'll see you around...then again...maybe not.

Nice work racingdad, they should put your spiel on every cigarette carton.

My friend's mom just died of lung cancer. Oh why did she get lung cancer you ask? Take an educated guess. And sebastian if you want to be a smartass, try not to tell people you're Canadian.

This is why I love tennis and sports in general: Because when you step onto the court, you gotta let it all hang out, there's nowhere to hide, no lies, no deception, no bullsh.
You're all there and if you aren't by not giving it your all, you'll have lost much respect. And when the scoreboard reads 2-6, 1-6 and you come shake hands with your opponent, he will not care that your ankle is hurting, or the strings on your favourite racquet broke or that you are a smoker and you get tired easily. There are always excuses...

It's not cool, but it may SEEM cool the way other "risky" behavior can appear cool. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet, bungy jumping off a bridge, rock climbing without a safty line, etc, etc - these can appear to make you look confident and cool. However, sooner or later, the odds will be against you. A single mistake can kill you quickly, or - in the case of smoking - may lead to a long slow painful death.

I smoked up to two packs a day for 20 years. I've been "clean" for about 13 years now. I still don't have the lung capacity that I SHOULD have, but other than that I was pretty lucky and, to date, have not had any medical problems from the smoke. You may be lucky too, or you may be dead by the time your my age. Most of the risk factors that lead to a short life are completely within your control. Choose wisely.

Wrestling a 1,000 pound salt water crocodile would look pretty cool too. The major difference from smoking is that the croc will kill you faster. Smoking has to be the dumbest thing you can legally do to yourself and at the same time bother and offend almost everyone around you.

Not to mention wasting vast amounts of money. A pack of smokes is getting VERY expensive. When I started you could buy a CARTON for < $10. Now that'll only get you a couple of packs!

Smoking looks rather stupid to me. Cigarettes, according to the World Health Organization, kill 4 million people a year and will kill 10 million a year by 2030 if current trends continue. Unless there is a war on tobacco, cigarettes will cut short the lives of 500 million of the 6 billion people on earth.

To look cool, all you need is your racquet and a tennis court. Not a cigarette. BTW, why does one need to appear 'cool'???

As an ex-smoker, this is a legitimate perception.
Most of us started because we thought the same or someone encouraged us to start.
And yeah, I got started because the likes of your James Deans, Paul Newmans, the Marlboro ads. Influence can be strong when you're young. We all look for identity and smoking becomes relative.
But when you get sucked into it and can't get out, then all that goes out the window as you fight for more air,
    constantly cough,
always lose your appetite and don't eat properly,
    get antsy,
    easily irritated,
start drinking coffee (because the two is a potent mix)
find an excuse to go outside all the time (this was the only good thing)
and worst you can't sexually perform as you did before.

    Get the message?

I think it looks sort of low class. But we each have our own perceptions. And it's definitely frowned upon, especially in California. Sort of the anti-cool. And good luck getting a date too.

Yayyy let's all talk through holes in our throats yayyyy party. Smoking, is a disgusting habbit.

If you want to kill yourself, jump off a bridge at low tide. At least you wont be taking anyone with you. People die from passive smoking every day (that's second hand smoke if you will) who's to blame? I'd have to go ahead and say...the smoker!

I would strongly dissuade cigarette smoking. If you have to smoke something, which i recommend against, smoke something that:

    has a better buzz:

    has anti-cancer properties: http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20051019/hl_hsn/nolinkbetweenpotsmokingcancer

has compounds that spur brain cell growth:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20051013/hl_hsn/marijuanacompoundspursbraincellgrowth

and could improve memory, reduce anxiety and depression:

I was once sitting at a restaurant with some friends, and at the table next to us were four people, all smoking. My friend said ... "They must be college students, they're all smoking." They were so intent on looking cool, they wound up looking kind of foolish ... like a bunch of college students who finally made it out of their parents' house and were now living like adults. Only the adults weren't smoking, but were looking at these kids with amusement, really.

I smoked back in college ... for several months. I smoked non-filters (Chesterfields and Camels), smoked Turkish ovals, Gauloise, rolled my own (The Three Castles, Drum) ... I was desperate to look cool. But you can look just so cool when you're flirting with a woman and snot is running out of your nose. I quit easily. I was lucky. But there are so many addictive types ... people who can't stop ... and cigarette smoking just feeds that addiction. You really don't want to find yourself, 30-something ... freezing your buns off, just to grab a smoke outside an office building. And you've been thinking about that cigarette all morning long. That's not a very cool image ... but that's the way it really is.

I am not a smoker, and I strongly recommend against smoking. But I have to say that I am a bit turned off by those who treat smokers as sinners. Smoking is not a sin, it's a bad habit.

Once when I was a kid I went to the mall with a buddy of mine and his dad. We passed a group of young kids and noticed one of them was smoking. This kid couldn't have been more than 12 years old. My friend's dad approached him and said, "Hey kid, did you know your lollipop's on fire?" I thought that was just about the funniest thing I'd ever seen/heard.

Talking about digging out a old post from the grave. But I felt if this just helps ONE young person from not smoking its a well worth bringing this back up.

Its been 7 years since this thread started and ended and many years since Ive been active on the forum here. And also many attempts for me to quit 31 years of smoking failed. Here is your update..... I finally quit smoking permanently Jan 30th, 2012. Now comes the important part and please listen closely. It was Jan 30th 2012 the day I quit.....the day I had my first (of two) heart attacks.....the day BEFORE I died and had to be shocked back to life.... The day before I had to be flown in a helicopter to waiting surgeons.....The day before my life changed forever.....the first day of racking up a $176,000 medical bill last year.....and the day many many people dont live through.

Im now 48 years old, no family history of heart disease. Not overweight, actively playing tennis and other sports. No reason to have a heart attack. What I do have is Coronary Artery Disease directly due from a lifetime of smoking. And the thing that I will most certainly and eventually die from.

Why?? Because I thought it was cool to smoke at 16 years old and thinking I could quit at any time. My choice last year was to continue to smoke and die or quit smoking and live. I choose to live. You have a choice and I pray you make the right one.

This is no ******** and the story is very real and so is this statement....

    SMOKING is not cool.

I've never really figured out how one can "be cool" by wearing something or doing something. Nowadays it seems wearing a black t-shirt makes you cool. Earlier it was dark glasses ??

I thought smoking was cool in the 30's -- if one goes by old movies.

edit: racingdad, the post you quoted in your previous post half a century ago, has been severely edited. ;)

What does't look so cool is when you happen to have the unfortunate experience of catching clear sight of the teeth of someone who's been a smoker for 20 years+. Grim...

tbh smoking is prob. one of the worst thing people can do to their bodies.

It's so bad for your lungs, skin, heart, blood, mouth, troat, teeth, eyes, hair, nose, tongue, other people, etc...

Please, kids, DO NOT SMOKE EVER!

Thanks for sharing that moving story. Actually a few months ago, a well known tennis coach in Houston, Harry Taylor, suddenly passed away in his late 60s..and he happened to be a chain smoker.

To add to your list: Ruins your appreciation of the taste of food, men don't 'do as well' at certain intimate activities; lung capacity is compromised (so your tennis game will probably suffer) in the US, you're not a pariah. And a drain on society. I still don't understand why we can't have 'assigned risk' health insurance for the morbidly obese and smokers - just like bad drivers. Too much common sense I guess.
