    Because they have a smaller angle at which to put the ball into the service box. If they put spin on it there is a better chance the serve will go in.

    it is sort of self explanatory. less angle so you hit a kick serve so you still get net clearance but with good chances of getting it in the service box... no rocket science

    that's just their personal preference...i know someone around 5'3" who has a very flat 1st serve.

    Short people usually use kick or spin because they can get it over the net easier, but flat, is going straight down, after ther contact and the wrist snap and since short people are short, when they use flat it's mostly going to go in the net all the time. Is this that hard to figure out?:confused:

    I'm 5'5"~6" and I do flats :p ( well working on it). I'm trying to compensate for my height by jumping higher, which would give me more angle and more power I presume. Hopefully BB doesn't disagree ( the GOAT of tt forums )

    Talking about short people, I saw on the news, yesterday, that a judge decided to not send to jail a guy who was found guilty of some sexual crime I can't remember, right now. The reason? Because he was short! The judge was afraid he would be picked on in jail. If I recall properly, the criminal is 5'2 or something like that... So, as you can see, this guy wouldn't be able to hit a flat serve; oh, but he can rape and not go to jail!!!

    Actually, he's 5'1'' and the judge gave him a 10-yr probation for raping his fiancee's daughter. Twice. Regardless of his height, he should have been to jail anyway. And you know what? Child molesters tend to get beat up and killed in prison by inmates more often than any other. Let's see how he'd feel when he gets raped too.

    BTW, 5'7" and 5'8" are not considered short, even when compared to Americans.

    What are you guys talking about? Justine Henin-Hardenne is only like 5'6" or something, and her 1st serve is like 100-120 mph.

    I saw that too, this 50ish year old guy raped a 13 yr. old, and he was foudn guilty and was facing serious jail time. Since he was only 5' 1", the judge said he was too short to go to jail and he got 10 years probation. It'll probably be overturned though, at least I hope so.

    what are you on?

    Exactly and being small won't help him, which is what the judge was concerned about. However, this guy didn't seem to care about the consequences of his criminal actions, when he decided he wanted to carry them out. So, really, it's not this judge's job to, now, have to worry for him. Besides, talking about consequences, letting this stand, would promote criminal behaviour.

    People have stated on this forum that nobody under 6'4 can hit down on a serve so a flat serve better suits tall people. Shorter people can flat serve, but they can't actually hit down during a serve. Most short people's flat serves will go long so they either have to take a little pace off the serve or add a little topspin to the serve.

    No, it's not.

    She can touch the mid 100 eventually, even 110 .... SOME OTHER TIME.... but she doesn't not serve in the 100-120 consistently.

    Simply, it's difficult (not impossible) for a short person to hit a flat serve (that will go in) with enough power to cause damage. Furthermore, good spin serves cause more damage than flat serves that are not at full (or close to full) power.

    Even though I don't like you at all, that ^ statement was relevant, and funny!

    (Note, I did not say that I "hate" you. Just that you're NOT "alright" according to me (not that all of this is really important). As a matter of fact, I think you are "creepy", Lakoste.) :neutral:

    Short people who hit good flat serves are tough to return. It's like they skid and come on you fast.

    lol ^^ Of course the whole margin for error thing, but I am 5' 10'' (I consider short..) I hit flat serves, but I really jump into it...I would rather to kick or slice...

    ~Joe

    lol.. the problem with the jumping thing is... when I land and their return is deep I am not ready yet to return. Though this may be due to poor foot work...faster the serve faster it comes back sometimes...compared to kick or slice...

    There's a good logic for having two chances to serve. And most of the time, ATP players, including 6'10" Ivo Karlovic, uses Top Spin 2nd serve.

    ATP has him at 5' 11". Same service has Fabrice Santoro at 6' 0", Serena 135# so go figure.

    Well, I keep a racquet with a string attached to the stringbed. I always show players that even when your fairly tall (anything under say 6' 2") you cannot just hit the ball flat and have any expectations of it staying in. Sure gravity will bring the ball down a little depending on the speed but for all practical purposes, you need some kind of top to bring the ball down - pure slice won't do it.

    What's with you folks, man? 5'10" aint short. I'm 5'6", I'm a little short, I would say 5'7" is closing in on average, 5'10" is a fine height. Well, fine up till a point. I have been working on my serve, trying to up the speed on the first one, but the only way I can get it in the box IS with topspin, though I don't necessarily use a lot on the more successful ones.

    I found a little error in the maths... this is the correct list:

    5'0'' = 152,40
    5'1'' = 154,94
    5'2'' = 157,48
    5'3'' = 160,02
    5'4'' = 162,56
    5'5'' = 165,10
    5'6'' = 167,64
    5'7'' = 170,18
    5'8'' = 172,72
    5'9'' = 175,26
    5'10'' = 177,80
    5'11'' = 180,34
    6'0'' = 182,88
    6'1'' = 185,42
    6'2'' = 187,96
    6'3'' = 190,50
    6'4'' = 193,04
    6'5'' = 195,58
    6'6'' = 198,12
    6'7'' = 200,66
    6'8'' = 203,20
    6'9'' = 205,74
    6'10'' = 208,28
    6'11'' = 210,82
    7'0'' = 213,36
    7'1'' = 215,90
    7'2'' = 218,44
    7'3'' = 220,98
    7'4'' = 223,52
    7'5'' = 226,06

    :D
