I haven't looked too much into the whole "gold series" thing though I think I get the gist of it, but hasn't Dubai always been a few more points than most tournaments of its status? I thought most tournaments of its level were 250 and it is 300, or something close to that.

And some people wonder why people are confused by the points system.

Here is the points breakdown, courtesy of Steve G Tennis: http://stevegtennis.com/entrypoints.txt

As you can see by that chart, Dubai pays the maximum allowed by a non-Masters event, $1,000,000, so the title there is worth 300 points.

Of course this is official info. As for the unofficial part, it is said that Dubai has the very highest appearance fees ( not related to Fee :) ) and that is the very reason why they do get such a strong field year in year out. Being in that part of the world, very tourist orientated and rich, Dubai is a great destination and on top of this courts are very fast so the tournament is very attractive.

I think Dubai would pay a lot more, if they could. They probably already do that to the individual players thats why they draw such top names year after year. And its an absolutely fabulous setting. We are planning to go back next year.

Yes, Dubai pays astronomical appearance fees. That isn't a secret, the only thing we don't know is just how much they pay. But appearance fees have NOTHING to do with the amount of points a tournament awards, that is determined by prize money and the license that they purchased from the ATP. :)
