Perhaps to attract attention and generate interest amongst the players in partaking in the tournament. The $500k championship winner prize is bigger then all the other 500point events in the atp schedule. Its right up there with many of the 1000 point master Series events. A chinese tennis tournament might not normally generate much interest from western players as other more established tournaments have, so this may be a way of generating some interest in the events. Good international PR (i know its ironic given tawain and tibet) is a very high important to the bigwigs in beijing. And one of the best ways to do that is via sports. Thats why they hosted the olympics. Infact the olympics were brought back in order to facilitate peace (in chinas case good international PR) amongst nations. This is also likely one of the goals of getting a foothold in tennis.

Actually I think all they did was remove a bell from a local buddhist temple, affix it upside down on a mantle, and engrave it.

but yeah seriously the trophy looks pretty ugly.

It would be quite embrassing if a small player won that trophy.

Think about it. When Djokovic has people over at his house, and they walk by the trophy case...they'll be all "Whoaaaa what super-prestigious tourny is that from?"

    Clever Chinese.

This hideous POC looks like it was produced in some cheesy trophy shop. They chose the largest, ugliest, most obnoxious trophy ever produced.

    How embarrassing

Are you sure that's not 500,000 Chinese Yuan? LOL

That check is written all in Chinese and it looks like even Djokovic's name in the Payee field has been "translated" into Chinese.

BTW, can you believe that the women's winner got US$775,500? Can't believe that the women get more than 50% more prize money than the men. :???:

  32. Djokovic got 500,000, BUT the womens winner got 750,000 !
This is what Kuznetsova had to say about it" I like this tournament mainly because we get more money than the men, and i think we deserve it".

It was Magnus Norman, Robin Soderlings coach who reported she had said that, im looking for the source though.

"Deserve it"? Gimme a break! If she can beat Djokovic, then I would say that she deserved it. :-?

  34. That's because the male and female tournaments are not related.

In ATP, Beijing is ATP 500 event.

    In WTA, it's a 1000 event.

    Same as above.

That is a joke. Giving Women equal pay to men was a joke, and now giving them more is a disgrace.

  37. In WTA, Beijing is like a Masters tournament.

    In ATP, it's just a 500 event.

  41. I agree, i know that there was a difference in the mens and womens tournament but it was the "i think we deserve it" that got to me.

I don't care if Beijing was a Grand Slam for the WTA and a futures event for the ATP. The women don't deserve more money unless they can compete with the men in matches.

They don't use the $ sign for Yuan. So it should be in $ most likely in US$ but it could be Singapore $ or any currency that use the $ sign.
