I heard they changed the grass and now it's slower etc. Why'd they do that?

I just read in another thread here it's to accomodate baseline players and have longer rallies...accomodate claycourters...

seriously, they just made wimbledon "just another surface" instead of a unique one.

no. the grass court shoes were tearing up the courts so they put in a new, more durable, but slower grass.

Did you see any evidence to support that claim?

here's a question: with current technology, isn't it possible to roll down the grass and have it be firmly in place, after every day?

Yeah, it's about the shoes, over the years shoe companies developed "grass court shoes" that totaly buggered the old grass, so they made it more durable, but then the shoes got worse still, and here we are.

    Amone,

If that's the case, why not regulate what kind of shoes can be worn?

b/c basically any kinds of shoes would rip up the grass court. clay and hard court shoes would rip the grass to sh*t and even the grass court shoes which are specially designed to be the lightest on grass rip it up. if they make the soles of the grass court shoes any softer or flatter, the player would have absolutely no traction and it would be like an ice rink, so the grass had to be changed.

    Bogie,

Ok, why is the idea about rolling down grass after every day so impossible? With modern technology, surely they could make it so it stays perfeclty in palce and is seamless for all tennis-playing purposes.

Sure, it'd be expensive, but who cares?

It simply isn't; grass is an organic material, nor would it be cost effective.

federeruberalles took the words out of my mouth, but the main reason you answered yourself.

thats why. cheaper to get new grass anyway than to go through all that hassle if it were even possible, which it isnt.
