cant stand the fact that he is goat?

or because he destroys american players easily?

i mean, why dislike him? hes not the one who almost hit a guy by throwing a tennis racket in some camera man in his semi finals match in the 2007 AO.

he doesnt yell vamos and jump around like topspin monkey to the point that it gets annoying.

hes the goat, prepare for more domination. he will break sampras' record for most slams.

I don't hate Federer. I just find his game and demeanor boring. Nadal actually has a personality and God forbid if he yells vamos.

Yeah federer got boring after a while, the only times he's fun to watch is when he plays against caƱas or nadal, he sucks the life out of tennis, its like, "Hey i heard "my favourite player" is playing tomorrow, do u know against who" the other dood: "federer", whats the point of watching the match if he's going to get slaughtered, dont get me wrong, hes a great player and has all the GOAT potential.

And what if you dont like watching a "Monkey" why do u call him a monkey? is it racist?, is it because hes not american?, is it because he's able to BEAT federer?, And why do you think yelling vamos is wrong?, i mean, that shows that he enjoys what he's doing and most important, he's got attitude.

Lendl, Graf and Henin get the same flak.
    They are no Americans.
    But dare to beat Americans!
Hard to accept for some "patriotic" US citizens obviously ....

Make no mistake - these weird Americans are only a minority in their own country.
    Fortunately ...

  10. I am not his fan because I think he benefits from an overall very weak era, has an ego that is incredibly obnoxious, and tries to mask it behind an "I'm so nice and humble" attitude this is so phony he could easily be a politician. Even if he wins 20+ slams I will never think he was the greatest tennis player of all time because aside from Nadal he is not playing any other great players. McEnroe, Sampras, Laver, Gonzalez (Pancho that is), Lendl etc. These are all guys I think are better players no matter what Federer does with the rest of his career.

He is a mentally fragile player that plays against weak people. Just look at what happens to him when someone dares to stand up to him. He falls apart (i.e. against Nadal generally and Canas in the last month or two).

What I don't understand is why ARE people his fan? Generally I like people that seem to be good people first and foremost. This is why I like Nadal. I like his attitude and fighting spirit. He seems to be genuinly down to Earth (before the Wimbledon final he stated he can only beat Roger "Sometimes" after the interviewer said he "always" won, and then went on to say he would have to play the match of his career to win. I like that) whereas someone like Roger after getting repeatedly spanked by Nadal goes off to say he is one dimensional and that he is still the obvious number 1. That is unbelievably obnoxious, and I don't see how a single person can root for that.

It has been my observation that a lot of the Federer fans attach themselves to him as if his accomplishments somehow bolster their own lives or sense of self worth. I find that odd myself. I know this is not unique to tennis, and is a problem with all sports, but Federer fans seems to live and thrive on his wins. I would suggest some sunshine for these people. :p

  11. Also, what is it with people saying Americans don't like Federer because he's not American? Talk about pre-judging people. When I was a kid my favorites were Becker and Lendl. I was about 6 or 7 at the time. I have never ever chosen who I like because of their nationality. That accusation is such a cop out to avoid real issues.

Lendl, Graf, Henin and Federer are the four most successful European players of the last 25 years.

I know not a single country in which those four players have met the same aggressive adversity as in the United States of America.

    Condi

  14. Adversity in what sense? I have to plead ignorance here. Henin isn't well liked in general because of how she conducts herself, isn't that true? Graf is probably my favorite womens player of all time and Lendl is one of my favorites, and I am an American. Federer seems to get decent receptions just about everywhere from what I've seen. Lendl did have a lot of detractors but wasn't that more about his robotic nature? Also at the Nadal/Roddick Indian Wells match, Nadal appeared to have more support from where I was sitting. Explain that?

What I think is FAR worse, is that some people like someone simply because they are "countrymen," choosing to completely ignore the quality of that person's character.

The reason why people hate Federer is the same why sports boards almost always become jock celebrity boards. It's easier to yap about the same 2-5 front runners, than actually get into challenging discussions about the other 100 world class athletes on tour. That would actually require effort. I'm very guilty of that too.

    I worship Federer's game:D
he forces the ballbashers like Roddick to actually learn tennis instead of hitting the ball and learning that moving towards the net is not as if he were stepping on foreign soil and that nowadays standing on the baseline and smack forehands ain't gonna win you much
and everybody else to play better because with him playing so well on all surfaces
and with Nadal owning clay and Federer in the finals there
they,to some extent have forced the tour to get better, get fitter, get faster, move better and actually play tennis and fight for the crumbs they leave behind:lol:

You know i do agree with some of your points, but im not hater or even close of Roger. But your theory that he falls apart mentally when someone challenges him is false, when someone challenges him its not mentally he loses. Roger is very tough mentally and somewhat cocky, his so called "defeats" by Rafa and Canas were both VERY close and tough matches. So a set or two hell lose give a 6-3 to Nadal but none other than that. Fed i feel likes it when people challenge him, just makes him greater and something to work more forward too. If he does lose to these guys, its because they were mentally incredible that day and had the game to beat him, but scarcely. Roddick for instance doesnt fear roger and likes his meetups however he gets demolished because his game just isnt sharp enough to bother Fed.

I rooted for Federer to beat Roddick in that first Wimbledon semi-final. He has done wonders to keep Roddick out of the winner's circle. What I feel guilty about is rooting Federer on against Baghdatis in the Aussie Open final. Baghdatis is much more likeable. What I have learned is that I like watching Roddick and Federer lose. Other than that, he is not Safin. DAVAI, Marat! WOOOO HOOOOO!

I think for the most part people like or dislike players because of how they act not where they come from. One thing about tennis you are a tennis player NOT a ( fill in the blank of whatever country you are from) tennis player unless it is the Fed or Davis Cup play. To say someone is liked or disliked because they are or aren't American is childish. I personally like and dislike some American players because of HOW they act on and off the court. I don't like all American players. Again to like every player that comes from your country is patriotic only in the Fed and Davis cup. There are good ones and bad ones ( jerks) in every sport requardless of the country they come from.
Federer is one player that you either like or dislike no middle ground ( he's just OK answer). Hewitt, the Willaims sisters are other players like that I think.

How are you so sure that Nadal is very good, does not have any ego and is very down to earth? I agree that he does not speak himself as favorite like Federer does. But do you really know what is in his mind and what he really thinks? From my experience as a fan, I would say that Nadal's modesty is not genuine. He knows very well in his mind that he is the best player on clay and is the real hot favorite to win any clay court tournament. This is very evident for everyone from what he has done on the dirt the past two years. But still in his interviews, he would say that Federer is the favorite and not him. Is this modesty or a psycological tactic to shift pressure on his opponent thereby freeing himself of that pressure? Another example is Nadal would always say that Federer is miles better than him and that his own aim is to continue as number two and that number one is out of his reach. Do you believe that Nadal really feels so and that too having beaten Federer so many times? I don't think so. Seeing the way how Nadal plays and that too especially how he lifts his game against Federer, it is highly evident that he is not content with his number two spot and is very much determmined to move one level up and also very much believes he can do it. But he never speaks out his real thoughts and feelings during interviews. Is it modesty or false modesty? Federer always plainly speaks out what he really thinks and does not try to create a false modest image. I will say that Federer is more plain and straightforward.

Secondly, I find Nadal's vamos and fist pumps very bad and annoying. You say that is passion and attitude. But it may also very well be a psycological tactic to make his opponent feel uncomfortable and throw off his opponent's rythm.

And then, it should be very evident by now that Nadal is the master of gamesmanship. He clearly adopts certain tactics like delaying between points, taking injury timeouts especially while trailing, celebrating opponent's unforced errors, staring at opponent's winners and finally manipulating the crowd (remember Berdych match) with the intention to get into his opponent's head and disrupt his concentration and rythm. These tactics are very much visible for any open minded tennis viewer. These are all not the symptoms of a good person you say you always like. If you really favor good people, you should be liking Marcos Baghdatis (a genuinely nice person) instead. I feel you should spare much more thought as to who is really phony? Federer or Nadal?

So, I feel that Nadal need not be necessarily as nice and humble or down to earth as he projects himself during press interviews and as you people make him out to be. And also, Federer is not necessarily as bad or egoistic as you say he is.

To conclude, I would like to answer your curious question as to why some fans like me prefer Federer. I like Federer and want him to always win because I find his game to be the most beautiful, elegant, interesting and wonderful to watch of all the players. There is aesthetic beauty in his game which should be very visible for anybody who loves and admires beauty and art. In addition, I also love the cool and effortless manner in which he displays his beautiful art. I love to watch beauty mixed with elegance and always want beauty to triumph rather than those ugly and nasty fist pumps, unpleasant stares and annoying vamos.

Maybe it's not that the competition is weak, but that Fed elevates so highly over the others?

Yeah the competition is weak is weak smack imo. Federer is amazing when it comes to handling pace. You got to find another way to beat Federer and that is what Nadal and Canas have been able to do.

Fed is toast, been a while to make deep into a tourny for him, run out of luck it seems. Lucky for him he (still) doesn't have to play qualifying for the clay court tournaments main draws this spring...

You like him because he's been highly ranked for a while and overhyped by the media. There is nothing special about his tennis, and he is certainly far from a likable personality if you can get over the media hype.

That is f*#^@&! ridiculous! Are you trying to tell me that it was luck that won him 10 grand slams (and the 2 or 3 more he's gonna win this year)? Was it luck that he beat Sampras, the (former) greatest player? Oh and he should definitely be playing in clay court qualifiers because it's not like he was the runner-up at the French and the world's #1. No, no it was all luck. Roger Federer must be the luckiest man in the history of the world

I resent the foul language you chose to use in your post, yet I recognise that such drastic measures may be necessary to make a positive comment about Federer. I was simply reminding persons such as yourself that Federer has been on a loosing streak and it is fortunate for him that he has points from last year to get accepted into main draws in Euroclay.

Since you have failed to introduce yourself in good manner by starting an appropriate thread under "odds and ends", I will take this opportunity to welcome you to these forums and wish you the best of luck here (which I sense you will need). And by the way, Federer is not going to win "2 or 3 slams" this year or any other year. Good day...
