I believe that Maria had lost the final the day before when she was booed off the court.Sharapova is an adrenaline player and she draws energy from the crowd , but for whatever reason the more her celebrity stature on and off the court is on the rise her public likening , especially among the tennis literate audience is on the decline.I think she lost because she knows that .Her uncharachterestic subdued affect and lack of forehand confidence was all too obvious...Well thats my opinion whats yours?

you make valid points. she has days like that. she's 18 and rich. she needs to learn to play in hostile environments.

Yes, she is only 18. Think of all she has accomplished- Wimbledon championship, Year end championship, Semi-finals of 3 of the 4 grand slams, quarterfinal of Roland Garros, last week's pacific life open champion... She is getting better. Think of all that she can still accomplish. She could have at least another 12 years or more on the tour.

Agree tennissavy ..however i think that just because you have more commercial value than some of the other palyers doesnt mean that you are not governed by rules of sportsmanship. The way she behaved in semifinals against Golovan was disgusting and despite her celebrity golden girl status people took a note of it and sent a message.Look at Roger Fedrer, Murusmo both number one in the world. They are confidently humble and human on and off the court.Divas dont get much love on the court...remember serena.....I think Maria has the talent to be one of the all time greats but she would need some attitude adjustment and a lesson in sportsman ship to win over the audience...Its what matters in the long run...but thats just me ..i may be wrong

i've never heard one single announcer or expert say anything but good about maria, particularly about her attitude. just a bunch of "so called fans" who don't really like anyone. nor have i ever heard maria make one derogatory statement about anyone. its always easy to find reasons to criticize, particularly if someone lives a better life.

WATCH THE FINAL...AND LISTEN TO THE COMMENTATORS....i didnt say that she had said anything deragatory about any one ...i commented on her lack of concern regarding the injury of her opponent...i think she was a little too self absorbed...she is a great palyer i dont doubt that ..a great sportswoman ? i am not too sure...and yes about the good life...more money doesnt equal good life...dont ask me how i know that...i might tell you..i hope she makes even more money..that didnt bother me...i ama big fan of fedrer...i think he is making some decent money...

Sharapova is a lot like roddick I think. They both almost kind of transcended the sport in their popularity andy in previous years, and sharapova is still going on. You can tell by the way they behave and move on court in the heyday, they think everyone adores them or something. You don't have to deal with adversity much when everyone is cheering you on and you think everyone is rooting for you and paying attention to you and not the other guy every time you step on court. I thought it was interesting when kuznetsova commented that she was surprised to find the crowd cheering for her more and not sharapova, as if water was flowing uphill. It really isn't a coincidence I think that sharapova went down as she didn't "feel the love" and faced adversity for the first time.

To play against players like Hennin, Kuznetsova or anyone else with same style, Sharapova needs to improve a lot her footwork and change the contact point of his forehand. The backhand, the serve and the breasts is ok.

    SPOILER, just in case.

Agreed that she was subdued in the final.
It may have had something to do with her opponent's forehand and serve. Kuzi did not allow Maria to dictate.

Hey, Buckwheat, can you use Maria and dictate in a sentence?

So if you turned on your tV on Sunday expecting to see the women's final you would have been disappointed, and you would have had to come to this thread to find out the result anyway.

Next time read the schedule on the tournament site.

what lack of concern are you talking about, man (as well as others on the blackmailing drive)? Golovin didn't have a heart attack and her life wasn't at threat at any stage, was it?
While your opponent is on the tennis court he can come back and kick your butt, and you will feel as fool. I played a guy who complains that he's got problem with his foot and cannot run well, then you feel guilty to move him around (not a heartless monster, are you?!) and the next moment you lose.
When your opponent is on the tennis court you treat him as opponent.

I think Sharapova is too good for many tastes, and it is just black envy.
She is smart, talented, determined, hard working, successful.
She's got good family, loving parents and loves them back.
She's so white and clean that it drives some people mad!
They are looking for some dirt, sensation.
It's like the class hates good student amongst them - he's not one of us!
He's good at everything, and we, lazy *******s, are not.

well said. its like everything she does is being attacked. now staying loose and focused , during an injury timeout, is a crime. hopefully this experience will help her in the slams in dealing wih unfriendly environments. whether maria wins or loses is fine with me, but i think she has been great for womens tennis.

So if you thought that they played the final on sunday, it means that you didn't record the final on Saturday, so you haven't been spoiled at all by this thread! You had to finally learn the result on day, right?

I totally agree! It is ridiculous for anybody to attack her in this instance. While you are on the court the person across from you is your opponent and you should always be ready to play. For all Sharapova knew Golovan could have had a slight sprain and kept playing. The announcers during the finals even stated that Sharapova had the same thing happen against Serena and was not ready when the match resumed.

Maria had a good four weeks, regardless. She just needs to work on conditioning, serve like maria of old, and i think her game her game will be ready for the next step, #1. Even in losing she appears to have a bigger game than kuznetsova. Just didn't play well. As of now she is the most consistant of the top 5. Fame is a funny thing. It work both ways, and shes got plenty of it.
