Wide Tennis Shoes?

Hi everyone.

I'm a big guy (315 lbs) and I need GOOD shoes -- something that will hold up to my weight, at least for a little while.

I also have a wide foot. I'm fine in some brands, like Reebok or Sketchers, but in most other brands, I have to have a 12W. So far, I haven't found many true tennis shoes that come in wide sizes at the stores I shop.

I started out with a pair of K-Swiss in 12W (I think they're Contenders) that were on sale at Sports Authority for $40. I tried them 4 or 5 times, and the last time, after I took them off after playing a couple of hours of tennis, I almost cried my feet hurt so bad.

Then I bought a pair of 12W New Balance 515's. They're MUCH better, but my feet still hurt for a while after I play. This may just be a reality of being as heavy as I am and playing 2-3 hours of tennis/racquetball a day, but I wondered if any of you had any luck finding other tennis shoes in wide sizes. I'd LOVE a pair of 12W Barricades V, but as far as I can tell, Adidas doesn't make them.

Any help out there?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Prince OC1 in wide fit. I know the Cobra comes in a mid height; not sure if that is available in wide. For extra support check out the ASO ankle supports -- the design is really for total foot support which will help greatly. Nike Cross Trainers are another option. While not a wide per se, they are roomy. Prince, however, does specifically make wide sizes. Hope this helps.

Yonex 304s are slightly wider than normal in the front, though they have what I'd consider a normal heel width. I find them very comfortable because they fit my feet well; they cushion well, but I weight under 180lbs, so take that into consideration.

Many Diadora shoes also are said to fit wide, though I don't have experience with those.

Definitely look at Prince

I have wide feet as well. I really would look into the prince T22 and or the OC's.

Try the 4E from New Balance.

If those still hurt you, then you might ask yourself where in the foot you are feeling the pain.

It may have less to do with width but with your arch, the way your feet pronate or supinate, etc.

Perhaps a trip to a podiatrist for a custom orthotics ought to be in order. Make sure you tell your doctor that you want orthotics for athletics.

New Balance, Nike @E Ballistecs, OV-1 Wide and mi adidas barricades (in wide width) are all good options. However, I'd be careful with the Yonex 306's...they have a narrow area just in front of the heel, with a plastic counter than can be very painful for those with wide feet. And they're not that wide to start with. The 304s are wider. And the Asics Gel Resolution 2s are not wide at all across the ball of the foot, so people with wide forefeet or bunions don't have much success with them.

If support is an issue (which at the OP's weight it may well be), then the barricades may be the best way to go. They're built like a brick fort.

You can create your own at http://www.miadidas.com/CustomizeShoe.action?ident=I1223470538447_IN&type=2, but then they'd cost $140.

For your current shoes, you can also upgrade the insoles. Depending on your foot type, you can try the one I listed here:http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=279319 or another that just increases the cushioning. As bigger guys, we break down the cushioning faster than most on our shoes.

Well - obviously every foot is different. I use New Balance because my feet are freakishly wide. I find the 1004 to be comfortable but the padding compresses quickly, making it hard to justify the $130 retail price. I think that many of the bigger players like the stability of the NB 803, but it does have a squarish shape that may not work with your feet.

From your description - it does not sound like your foot is super wide. I would suggest you try out the Head shoes and the Babolat, that tend to be cut wider.

Also know that many of the companies have different widths for different models. For example, the KSwiss Stabilor model is quite wide and supportive, whereas other Kswiss are much lighter and narrower. You really need to try on Kswiss, because their quality control accepts a lot of variance in sizes - so the left and right shoes may differ by a whole size.

I 6th the motion for New Balance, they also have the best pronation support. Next sneaker I would say would be the Adidas, however new balance is what you're looking for going by your description.

TW has them listed for 89.95 and 95.95 for the black and white respectively.

I have wide feet. Standard Adidas & Nike shoes are too narrow for me... I've tried Barricades, Vapors, Geniuses you name it.

I wear NB 2E 802 and am satisfied... although I'd like to try K-Swiss Stabilors but they're not available at TW Europe (...and won't be - I asked!). The only thing stopping me from ordering is the shipping cost: 44 freaking USDs... :(

Would the ballistics be too tight if you have a 2E foot? Does anyone here with a 2E foot own a pair.

I thought the reviewers at TW said the Ballistecs had a narrow fit?

I've never worn them, but in my experience, Nike shoes would be a problem for someone with a 2E foot.

Which Ballistics? The Nike Ballistec 1.2 are available with a wide width. I like them, but wish one day Nike will make future high end shoes available in wide width at least via Nike ID as Adidas with miAdidas

Thanks for the suggestions. I really wanted to build a pair of Barricade V's on the Mi Adidas site, but I couldn't justify $140 for a pair of shoes I couldn't try on before ordering them. I ended up purchasing a pair of the New Balance CT1004's in white. I hope they're great!

Thanks,

Jonathan
