Don't know what the frame is but that's a fantastic photo of him.

Today I saw a new Volkl, with their new things...I forgot what is called but it seems like a arm technology or something...mamamia, the racket itself looks funny.
But yeah, I agree with Galain about that picture...amazing shot of Wilander.

I think it is a Yonex RDS 001 midplus 98 sqinches. Look at the head shape and how the black paint is located where there would be writing on the frame.

Good spot VS. That does look alot like a Yonex frame, and he has been spotted playing with them recently.

Why would a retired player who's played with Volkl for a few years be using a Yonex with a Volkl stencil on it?

The reason might be "shameless deception and prostitution for monetary remuneration."

people can sure learn from the backhand form in this photo..it's old school..note the weight transfer into the shot.
wilander's contract w. volkl is up at the end of the year, and i understand he has been testing yonex. these guys will go with whoever offers them the most money <usually>, and volkl and becker certainly arent known as having deep pockets to buy tennis players

I think it is a Yonex. Wouldn't Yonex sue Volkl for this?

Indeed. Much better than I could have put it!

What surprises me is if Wilander's contract is coming to an end and he's flirting with Yonex or whoever why go through the trouble of putting the Volkl stencil on the racquet? (Looking at it from another angle it does look a bit like the RDS 001.) Why not simply play with it or any other racquet w/o a stencil? Lots of players retired and otherwise do the same as with covering up the logos on their clothes if it's time to renegotiate.

WOW, you must be a Neuro surgeon or something, your attention to Detail is amazing! But my point being, how great must the Yones RDS001 must be, that great player like Wilander is willing to go to this length to keep playing with this great racket, must bring out his best game. This proves that Yonex RDS001 is the best racket ever made by man, or with alien help//////////////

it's not going to any length..these guys can ALL play with anything reasonable, especially someone on the OLD GUYS TOUR where it is of no import..it's not that the Yonex is so great, it's likely the money offered by Yonex was greater

indeed, if you look at photo's of wilander, he played with any volkl almost, from catapult to v-engine, so he sure can play a yonex, agree with nobad here, its all about the money!

Money offered by Yonex?? I think the stencil tells you where the money is coming from, don't you think? Don't get in such a proprietary lather, NBM, just because someone lays down a Volkl to use a Yonex.

EVERYONE, don't let the shape of Yonex rackets turn you off, just try this great racket and you will love it. Yonex is making efforts to make their head shape more round like softening the edges, have you notice that??????

based upon your posts in general ollinger, you've got some serious issues that certainly dont involve me. i'm not in a lather..i'm just parsing info as i know it. i guess you dont think this stuff is mercenary in nature. you should check your own package before being critical of others.

It's pretty straightforward I think. W is trying out the RDS 001 (to make his transition smooth), but since his contract with Volkl isn't over yet, Yonex agrees to pay Volkl a certain amount and Volkl agrees to let W play with the RDS with their Volkl cosmetics. Everyone is happy!

people make wrong assumptions that everytime a player switches brands, it is the player choosing to end the relationship. that certainly isnt always true, and contracts arent all the same. Volkl bought Wilander through the end of the year, so makes sense he would at least fly the Volkl stencil until his contract is up at the end of the year...these things seem to happen quite a bit on Tour

Yonex's Isometric head shape has become more rounded over the years for one reason and one reason only, warranty claims. The rectangular head shape broke too often and couldn't hold up.

Did Wilander use Volkl throughout his career? If not, what was the stick he made his name with?

Wilander = Rossignol F200 Carbon he won 3/4 Grand Slams in '88 with it. In 89, he changed to a Prince frame because he thought he needed more power.

He did try one of the Rossignol semi-widebodies (when there was such a term: think it was the FT-something), and played his last Australian Open with a Fischer (same model that Masur, Stich and Leconte used).

And Wilander came to his senses and found out what a truly great probably best in history the Yonex RDS001 racket is. This was built by same aliens that built the Pyramids.....

Agreed. I used to use the R-50 back in the day and those things seemed to break if you sneezed in there direction, much less play with them. Great playing racket though.

It was the FT 6.60 that he was using. He retired with that frame. When he came back on the scene, Rossi was more or less done with tennis, and he came back swinging a 6.1 95. He went to the Fischer, then Head's Pure Competition XL, then a Ti Heat, then back to the F200 when he started on the seniors, played a Fischer here and there, and then ended up with Volkl.

[IMG]Of course! Why would Wilander be paid by Yonex to play with a disguised frame and Volkl stencil?

Wow, a HEAD Pure Competition XL? My best friend used that for years, a fine frame. Anyone know the specs of it? All I know for certain that it's 18x19.

Ditto this. I don't believe a RETIRED pro would have to do something like that. I would think a retired pro would use what best suits his skills at that point in his life. I'm sure they've made enough money to live on and only play because they love to compete and it's more fun and not as much pressure.

mctennis above is a picture of Wilander using a disguised Yonex RDS 001 with a Voelkl stencil.

Here is Wilander today with a undisguised Yonex RDS 001.

    http://legacyeditorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=73889192&cdi=0
    http://legacyeditorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=73889203&cdi=0

The reasons whether Wilander is retired or not means nothing. Wilander had signed a contract to use Voelkl racquets when playing Senior Tournaments or in Public Appearance. In return Voelkl paid Wilander and provided him with racquets. In order not violate the contract while with Voelkl Wilander disguised the Yonex RDS 001 and put a Voelkl stencil on the strings.

I'm not sure when it was exactly, but I distinctly remember Wilander playing the Prince CTS Graduate 90 at some point (along with Michael Pernfors).

That was the frame he switched to from the F200 in '89. You might also notice that Pernfors now plays with the same Yonex that Wilander does....coincidence? I think not...
