Federer has been winning a lot since last year's US Open, while Djokovic and Nadal have been faltering somewhat. If things continue on a similar course and Federer is able to keep it up somewhat, will he be able to regain the #1 ranking again by the end of this year's US Open, and thereby, finally breaking Sampras's untouchable record of total weeks ranked at #1?

I think it's heavily dependent on Djokovic and how well he performs in these next few months. Roland Garros and Wimbledon will be key. Roger has a great chance to make gains in Wimbledon, Toronto/Montreal, and Cincy, whereas Djokovic is defending both finals and champhionship points (as well as in Rome). It's possible, but I just want to see Roger get to No. 2. The strike for No. 1 can get started after he secures #2.

Since Federer didn't win any Slams last year, all he has to do is to win 1 (or more) Slam and keep up his performance in the Masters and he'll likely regain the #1 ranking. Djokovic and Nadal have more points to lose than to gain this year while Federer has lots of room to gain points. :)

But that's only until after the US Open. After that, Federer has quite a lot to defend, with Basel, Paris, and a perfect WTF win. That's 3000 points!

Scratching the surface there,BP. Fed will infact drop points if he doesn't make the final of RG.

That's why in my OP I asked if Federer will regain the #1 ranking after the US Open. I didn't say end of the year.

I don't even think it's dependent on him winning a slam. Remove one of Djokovic's two and give Nadal one average/anomaly result and it's there for the taking based on a couple of late runs by Federer alone imo. If Berdych, Delpo, Murray or Tsonga pulled a blinder anywhere (next week especially) Sampras could really start sweating.

But he will gain points if he gets to the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open. If he wins one or both, then it's a lock. :)

You might be right. Since Federer didn't even make the finals of Wimbledon nor the US Open last year, if he just made the finals of both and if he wins Toronto and Cincy (since he went out early in both last year), and Djokovic and Nadal fail to win the Slams, Federer would surge ahead. :)

Anything could happen. It's a very exciting time for tennis. If Djokovic wins Roland Garros it will be tough for Fed. However if Federer can win Wimbledon or Roland Garros, it's all on.

    A lot of if's.

I think Nadal will become less relevant as time goes on.

Freddy will draw one of the big hitters in his quarter or in an earlier round such as TBerd/JMDP/Raonic/Tsonga,guaranteed. We know how that's gonna pan out looking at his stellar performance in the past two years. The guy couldn't even win from 2-0 in sets. What is the indication that he'll reach the Wimby final let alone win it? He's declined the most on the surface. I don't think he can beat Ralph there, Djokovic perhaps he could.

As far as USO goes, yea ok he's got a shot. But it may not be enough. And If Djokovic simply improves his RG performance(a semi) and wins Wimbledon, it will be curtains for Federer.

And no Fed ain't winning Canada AND Cincy. He couldn't even do that in 2006.

Fed plays like JesusFed in one tourny and turns into a chump in the very next. Refer Miami 2012. This is *******,not PrimeFed.

I haven't even mentioned the Nadal. Ralph has been in incredible form since AO 2012. Madrid was a blip in the radar.

If everyone defends all their points except for Federer who wins Cincinnati, Shanghai and makes it to the semis at Wimbledon, he could overtake Djokovic. Crazy to imagine Federer getting back to #1 without a slam.

Correction: Fed plays like JesusFed for about 5 tournaments back-to-back and then gets a bit tired for one tournament.

guys, get real. It is very unlikely he'll get back to #1. Djokovic is too solid (holding 3 slams), Rog is almost 31 yo. Most of the big hitters can take him down at slams. I know he is the most loved player in the world (and on this board) but please. He hasn't won a major in 2 years. Well, dreaming is free.

I think Ralph is a bigger threat by far than the Djoker for Fed IMO. Djoker is at 1.2/1.0 level right now. That won't be enough for RG/Wimby imo. USO maybe.

Slightly getting ahead of ourselves because he hasn't even taken the #2 ranking yet and with the kind of form Berd is in, I am not so sure he will take it.

There is a lot of truth in monfed's post though it may sound like a 'Clarky' impersonation as it is based on facts.

First of all, Federer needs to get to no 2, have Nadal drawn with Djokovic in one half a couple of times and see what happens. He won't get to no 1 if he has to blast through both Djokovic and Nadal in every tournament.

I agree Fed's unlikely to get back to #1 but not mainly because of Novak who so far is nowhere near his 2011 level, he won AO this year through grit and confidence he carried over from his insane success last year but other than that his tennis has been lacking. To be honest I wouldn't be even that surprised if Fed finished the year ranked ahead of Novak.

The guy who IMO is most likely to end the year as #1 is Nadal who is my pick for both RG and Wimbledon. USO this year I think will go to Novak or Fed.

If Federer makes final in RG OR Wimbledon and wins the USO, and PLAYS Shanghai, he has a great chance to be no.1 Especially if Djokovic doesnt win Slams.

Either way Fed will IMO have to win another slam to have even a semi-realistic chance at getting back to #1 and I don't really fancy his chances at winning another FO or Wimbledon, the only slam I think he has a somewhat decent chance of winning this year is USO.

I say Fed will get it sometime after the Olypmics (Toronto, Cinci period).

The earlier he gets #1 the better, that allows him more time to get extra points (USO, Shanghai) to get a cushion and go into the indoor swing.

You know, a couple of months ago, you were saying that there was no way Federer would get the #2 spot and that Nadal would be back to #1 before that happened (and getting angry when it was pointed out to you that, yes, there was a chance that Federer would get to #2 before RG).

So now I'm telling you, yes, there is a (good) chance of his getting the #1 spot back. A lot of that depends on how Rome and RG turn out, but basically, Djokovic had better score a lot of points before the clay season is over. If he stays with less than a 2,000-pt difference after RG, he has basically no chance of preventing Federer to get back to #1, at least for a few weeks. Wait and see... ;)

Well, I'll have no trouble refuting this one, for a start:

Fed plays like JesusFed in one tourny and turns into a chump in the very next.

Won Basel, next event was Bercy. Did he turn into a chump there?

Won Bercy, next event was YEC. Same question.

Won Rotterdam, next came Dubai. Same question.

Won Dubai, then played IW. Same question.

So yes, this is definitely trolling, Clarky-style. That's quite alright, to each his own and all that, I suppose. Plus, the Fed fan club didn't have his prophet of doom and gloom yet, so that's fine... ;)

well, we are all speculating here ... I'm not saying it's impossible but who knows? I didn't expect Nadal to fu,ck up so bad. I guess we'll have to see what happens in Rome and at RG. we are just chit chatting.

To be honest with you, it doesn't really matter to me. well, I understand you Fed fans want Fed to break that last record ... it's all good.

we'll see. I still don't think it's going to happen.

Yeah, and I am sure that you Fed fans would just sit back and keep your mouths shut if Nadal were ranked number 1 in the world after having not won a slam in 2 1/2 years. I think there's a better chance of h*ll freezing over than of that happening.

You do understand how rankings work, right? (Apparently not, so allow me to explain.) They compute the points scored by players according to their results in a number of tournaments per year, not just the slams. The number of slams he'll win (or not) wasn't the question of this poll (there are other threads that cover this, lol). ;)

It doesn't really matter to me either, but he's obviously on a roll, so yeah, I'd like him to make it (but won't be bothered if he doesn't). Fact is, he's really getting close, so both Djokovic and Nadal will have to pick up their game if they want to remain ahead of him.

Slams may be the most prestigious events in tennis, but they do not determine rankings. Neither does sentiment. In terms of ranking points, a slam win can be compromised by two Masters 1000 wins, 4 500 series wins, etc. So, Roger getting to No. 1 is a mathematical possibility. And there were periods of time in 2010 when Djokovic was ranked above Federer, despite Federer having won the AO that year and Novak not having won a slam in two years. Nadal also fell below Murray in 2009, depsite having won the AO that year and Murray never winning a slam in his career.

Nope, he'd probably be copiously bashed by the more, ahem, vocal of Fed fans should this happen. Now, can you promise the Nadal fans won't do the same should Federer regain the top spot without winning a slam?

    Thought not... ;)

I voted with my heart because I want it to happen yet my mind is telling me the chances of it really happening are quite slim.

Roger is already talking of how he is not feeling so hot and having to take anti-inflammatories.
