I hate to see any player go out to injury, and Rafa was clearly struggling in his match against Fritz. Not happy he had to withdraw.

But beyond Wimbledon, this withdrawal could have historic implications. IF Rafa can't play and Nole won't play the US Open...

There are only 8 weeks left until the US Open, and Rafa's injury is not an easy one. Will he have enough time to recover, and do you expect to play at least one warm-up event?

A lot will depend on the draw too. Imagine the hungry Russians plus a resurgent Zverev. The path could be exceedingly tough, fully recovered or not.

But imagine if he does not play!

This will be the first time without a big 3 member since 1999 without a big 3 member?

He doesn't have anything to prove. Plus Novak, his slam record rival, won't be playing.

I don't see why Nadal will want to enter unless fully fit and motivated.

There's still a chance for Novak. No way I am dismissing the chance he gains entry. They let a completely senile man run the country, they can let an unvaccinated Serb in. ;)

We will see. Lots more pressure being put on to lift vaccination mandate. Now other countries including Australia have. Plus if Rafa isn’t there, there will be more pressure put on to try get Djokovic there for the event. The world got to move on from covid.

Who is applying pressure to lift that mandate? Asking seriously

Literally all the countries are moving on accept America and Asia (knew they wouldn’t wit ph their zero covid policy and stringent policies) USTA and other people wanting them to let unvaccinated sports people in. If you are a fan of sport and tennis you should want Djokovic and other unvaccinated sportsmen to compete.

The only reason you won’t is if it better for your favourite. We want all the best players there and covid isn’t dangerous anymore or as bad as they thought. Time to move on as it makes no sense.

Ok, let's try not to derail this thread. Maybe the rule will change, but we don't know yet. Leave it at that.

I 100% think the mandate is wrong but believe me - no one is making a decision about this based on a tennis tournament or any unvaccinated athletes. It is not even remotely on the radar of the federal government and will not make it to Biden's desk for such a trivial reason. I ask because it's clear to me that no one is putting pressure on the government about this and the decision will be made or not based on concerns far removed from tennis.

Well even if we take sport out then, why would they keep it going? We have control of this disease now and the world has for ages. There is no reason to keep things going any longer. What are they gaining from it? It’s not great for a financial point of view. There are many unvaccinated people who can contribute a lot to USA influx of dollars, etc. It’s no longer health that should be the priority as we have this virus controlled and it’s not the big threat it was or what the media were saying back in 2020.

It actually is easy though. It's a small tear, it takes in the worst case scenario 4 weeks to heal. It's only a problem if the player keeps forcing because then it can get worse. But with proper treatment he should be perfectly good to go.

Ok, sounds great. Then this thread was premature.

Reasons that aren't meant for civilian ears. Djokovic is an ant in the eyes of the people making decisions about covid policy and the recommendations from the CDC. You are whistling in the wind by trying to talk about it logically or rationally or in the context of tennis. The rule will end whenever it ends for reasons that have nothing to do with the us open.

I agree. This isn’t about Djokovic now. It’s more the fact I don’t see how it’s benefiting USA as a whole to keep this enforced. One thing for sure if trump was still in power it would be removed or not been made in first place. America economy was booming with trump but good luck to them with senile sleepy joe haha.

Recovery timeline is about 3-4 weeks so he should be able to play in Canada (if not, he'll probably show up to Cincy). Unless another ailment pops up, I can't see Rafa not being in NYC in late August/early September

If the tear is only 7mm, he should be fine. He should play a couple matches in Canada and then go directly at the Open.

Nah US Open will be wide open as well. No Novak, likely no Zverev, and among the banned Russians, only Medvedev can seriously challenge for the title.

I see Rafa, Carlos and Med as the clear favourites over everyone else

And Med surely must have a mental block vs Nadal by now.

It is what it is. In a historic gas shortage we are now also sending millions of barrels from our strategic oil reserves to china. Unfortunately nothing makes sense. A scary time for sure and I am very afraid of how many of the precedents which have been established in the last couple of years under the guise of an emergency will be abused in the future.

Yeah Rafa's the last guy Med wants to see across the net and Carlos with all due respect, hasn't really done much at the slams so far. If Novak isn't allowed to play and Zverev (who I think is Rafa's toughest next gen opponent) can't go due to his injury, then a healthy/recuperated Rafa will go into US Open as a pretty heavy favourite, not as big as Nole at Wimbledon but he'll likely be the bookies favourite by some margin

Well said man. Yeah scary times indeed. A rough few years ahead on the back of this pandemic

Nadal said in the press conference that he'll be allowed to practice his groundstrokes in ONE WEEK from today :happydevil:

Firstly it’s eight weeks until the USO not six.
Secondly he’s been given a 3-4 week expected recovery time by his doctors and says he will able to practice groundstrokes in a weeks time.
His chances of playing the French and following that Wimbledon were more uncertain than this injury keeping him out of the USO and a warm up event.

You think he is done winning slams if he doesn't win USO this year?
I personally feel he really had to push himself to win #22. His body is breaking down and not just his feet. We saw it at IW and now Wimby. I think he’ll have a go at the USO and another go at RG ‘23. So yes, I think if he doesn’t win USO, I think he’s more or less done with RG ‘23 depending on the field and Alcaraz’s development.

He has had treatment done for his feet, and he was feeling good and healthy. He unfortunately picked up a tear, but that can happen to anyone.

He has 7 weeks to recover from his abdominal injury. Shouldn't be a problem (unless something more serious is going on).

He will have less than 7 weeks if he actually wants to be in slam winning form. He needs to be fully recovered with no risk of further aggravation and have competitive matches under his belt, before stepping into NYC, otherwise it will be very hard, as depth on HC is much greater than clay and grass, and he will be undercooked.
