Maybe. He'd need a similar situation to 2012 I think; two or more guys sharing out the points between them, leaving just enough room for him to swoop in and snatch the top spot with some inspired play over a short period of time.

Made all the easier if he can dominate the indoor season again. He's not had a great season this year, earlier losses than in past years etc. He shouldn't be too worn out from September onwards, I can see him winning a few events to give him something to build on for next year, if Murray continues to tackle equal the odds with Novak.

Well he's got to win US Open, and possibly Wimbledon next year. Not totally impossible but, at his age seemingly improbable

It'll never happen again but at least he broke Sampras's record. No need to be sad.

I don't think so. Too much of a hill to climb at this point. The best and most realistic goal for Federer right now is to win another major.

I don't think it's one of Federer's goals after having broken Sampras' record.

It's not worth the effort. Better to play a little less and try and win more slams.

The answer is the same as the following question:

Will Roger Federer regain his youth?

how do you think he can ?? Only way is if he wins a major. and dominate or win at least 2 or 3 masters series tournaments. I can't see this happening in a year.

Sorry but #1 ranking is not "his" anymore. It belongs to Novak Djokovic.

And the answer to the question is no.

Are you serious with this thread? He won't, but mainly because he doesn't care. His main motive from the ranking before was to break sampras' record. And that he did last year. So that is settled, he is now focused on slams. If he was concerned about Ranking #1 he would enter in more 500 matches, which he has opted not to.

I thought this was crystal clear?

    Ah shagrin.

No, I don't believe he can or that he himself is too focused on that.
As far as that No1 spot is concerned, maybe for Fed it's now a case of,

I'm presuming this is a troll thread? Fed will never get back to #1.

One more miracle slam run I wouldn't completely discount but getting to #1 again? Fugetaboutit.

I know this is highly unlikely, but what if he does by having another "late 2012 - July 2012" run? Even MNavratilova said the same thing back in March 2011 and she even apologized to RFederer post Wimbledon last year.

    Time to meet reality.

Unfortunately that reality is Fed is now too old, does not play enough, and is not committed enough to get the #1 ranking back.

IMO no. His days at the top are over, the time now belongs to Djokovic and more likely his successor Murray. Nadal may even creep into it. Federer though I think will win one more slam before he calls it a career. That is what I see for him now.

His schedule isn't even conducive to getting the #1 ranking even if he wanted it.

The only way he goes to #1 is if Novak, Murray, and Nadal all die in the same plane-crash... and even then I think Del Potro would push him pretty hard.

Have Fed fans not gotten enough out of the man?

is the greatest career ever not enough?

Probably not and nor does he need to. In fact he didn't need to last year either - it was just another cherry to put on the cake that is his career but not a record that he 'needed'. The guy has done more than anyone ever has in this sport.

Because that's how it works, right? Roger gets the ranking he wants? LOLz

I find it interesting that Federer wants to be world number 5 and lose in the second round of Wimbledon.

It's still amounts to the same argument - that it's all within Roger's gift if he can only be @rsed enough to try.

Roger can want it as much as he likes - if he is no longer capable of maintaining the ridiculously high standards of play he has shown over the last decade then he won't be number 1.

Time and tide wait for no man. I'm not writing him off from winning slams, but a guy who is 32 next month is not going to be able to sustain the consistent level of results required to be number 1 these days.

2 slams, 1 slam final, Olympic Gold, 1 MS title, WTF semis 2 other titles - that's the record of the guy who is 3000 points behind the current number 1.

Roger needs to better that and then some. It's not gonna happen mate.

I'm not saying he's gonna get it this year but I can definately see him doing great indoors and then if he cathes form in 2014 he might regain no 1.

He was ranked 1st not longer than 8-9 months ago, if the timing is right he might just snatch the no 1 ranking just like he did in 2012.

The #1 ranking hasn't been his for a while, since 2011 it's been Noles, even when Federer took it in 2012 we knew he was on borrowed time. He has the record and it's safe atleast 8 years considering Novak won't break his record and it's unlikely someone able to make a run at it will take over within the next year or so. Right now he's playing for titles.

Don't think he will, but I think he's still very much capable of winning slams. And that's really all that matters when you're RF.

Oh come on, even as a fed fan i think it would be bad for tennis if he becomes number 1 again. It's been a pleasure watching the Goat play at a high level so long, and proving naysayers wrong by getting the no. 1 ranking back in '12, even while Nad, Djok, Murray were in their prime.

That was Federer's moment and was a throwback to the glory days; proof that he was the best. But now if he manages to do it again it will just feel like halting the progress and accomplishments of the new gen. Seeing him slowly declining makes me feel that its more time for Fed to aim for a Sampras-like swan song, and just focus his energies on winning one last slam before he goes out. (maybeee even beat Nadal in a slam one more time? fingers crossed). That's what I'd rather see, def not him climbing back to the top again
