I am expecting to see Roger Federer live for the first time in my life in Rotterdam this year. I was wondering: Do you guys think he'll actually play, or will drop out?

Very curious what you guys think about him changing up his schedule and whether he'll meet the expectations of the Dutch.

doesn't look likely even though he does have it down on his schedule, but with Dubai just around the corner from that, i think it would be either one of them, hard to see him playing both, since he has a busy schedule next year with him most likely playing Davis cup as well against the US, he always goes to Dubai so if it is between them it would most probably be Dubai, since he stays there a lot and loves it there.

Hmm, I think he said to Krajicek (tourney director) that he intends to come, because he cuts out Dubai because of Olympics. He'll rather have his break a bit closer to Indian Wells. Besides, he is very apt to indoor tennis these days and the Rotterdam tournament almost certainly has less competition because they can't afford having both Federer AND Nadal/Djokovic.

I think he will skip dubai instead of dubai.

Dubai was not even mentioned earlier in his schedule but later appeared and by missing dubai he will almost get 3 weeks rest before indian wells.

IMO he will see who the competition is at both events, and choose the weaker one. Probably it will be Rotterdam

He'll play. It'll be a bad mistake to, and he'll probably go out early.

Don't know why he's decided to opt for an indoor 500 instead of an outdoor hard court where the fans and tournament love him off, and is in front of his home crowd where he trains loads during the year.

if he skips dubai then IMO dubai field will be weaker in comparison to rotterdam!!

He won't play both because he needs rest. Dubai previously served as a warmup for IW/Miami, but since he's playing Davis Cup this year (right before IW), Davis Cup can serve as his warmup instead. Therefore it makes more sense for him to play Rotterdam.

    Doha > AO > Rotterdam > BREAK > DC > IW > Miami
    is more balanced than
    Doha > AO > BREAK > Dubai > DC > IW > Miami

Davis cup-1st round is before rotterdam

    so
    Doha > AO > DC>Rotterdam > BREAK > IW > Miami

Thanks for the correction.... was basing off last year's Davis Cup schedule. Guess my argument suggests Dubai then

Isn't it true that ATP players only gain points for 2 best showings as far ATP 500 are concerned? (Can someone confirm this?)

If I'm right, it would be pointless for Fed to compete in both Dubai and Rotterdam since he's a 200% lock to play in Basel already. Also, he prefered Dubai to Rotterdam in almost every year (unless he played both a la 2005) so the chances of him competing in Rotterdam are rather slim.

If he wins the Australian Open, I expect him to pull out.

If he loses in the SF or earlier, I wouldn't be surprised to see him play it.

Hmm, I might be a bit too optimistic and enthusiastic then. I've got tickets for both QF sessions and the final. I've never seen Federer live and would absolutely love it. But might have to go to Paris I fear.

It's what I did at the FO 10 when I was staying in Halle for a while that year  My karma was having to watch him lose in the final I suppose :p

I don't see why he wouldn't intend to play, he's not added Rotterdam to his schedule specifically in ages. Reminds me of Stockholm last year.

You at least got to see him and Hewitt, do big champs and it was a tight match.

Hope he plays as well. Have tickets for all quarterfinals (didn't dare risk he'd play afternoon) and the final.

    Bump.

He's playing Rotterdam...AND....Dubai, now. He mentioned it on a Eurosport interview couple days back.

No idea why. Last push for No 1, needs all the points he can get?

if he does pull out, I will be very pissed off. He will play DC as well this weekend, so perhaps he decided to play a lot in february, because it's indoors a lot, which suits him atm and he has done pretty bad at IW and Miami the last 4 years? Then he might take a longer time off during clay season. Skipping MC and Madrid with possibly just 1 warmup event to RG? So he can rest closer to W and the Olympic Games?

Djokovic has owned Dubai the last 3 years, Federer should probably go and play Rotterdam instead, or maybe he wants to beat Novak?

I don't think he has played since he won it back in 05, when he recovered from that AO loss in the semis to go on a tear and win four events in a row.

He knows that now is the time to make a push for points. Good thing for him is that he hasn't lost points from AO, but of course Nadal has gained a lot. Plus, with a final to defend in Dubai, and a likely encounter with Novak who has owned that place for a while, this might be a good choice.

    Plus, it's indoors!

I was thinking to go to Paris myself.
So I checked the rates, and I'm shocked at how expensive Rolland Garros really is.
On the first day of the tournament, just a ticket for the outside courts, is a stunning 115 Euros!!!
And if you want to watch matches in one the main stadiums, you pay 220 Euros per day.
    Isn't that kinda steep?

No cancellation yet by the legend. Would be great our Dutch tournament (and for visitors like myself) if Federer actually shows up and puts in at least a decent effort (QF or something). :)
I have QF tickets and really nervous and excited for the coming days!

I wouldn't be surprised if he blows it off or gives a lackluster effort, but I wish he'd just focus and I'm sure he could win it quite easily. Then he has a tournament under his belt and a little confidence (and shake off that Davis Cup mess) before Indian Wells and Miami, which haven't been his best venues the past few years.

Now that the Big Three seem to be confining themselves to Masters and Grand Slam tournaments, it is a excellent idea for Federer to focus his dwindling energies on prestigious 250 and 500 events where he has a chance to pick up a couple of twilight trophies before the final curtain comes crashing down on his venerable nut.

I suspect the twilight years may be more of a famine than a bounty since his friend Raphael should soon be following him to the lower levels given his heart-breaking results at the slams and masters.

Roger should go straight for the challengers and futures and avoid more embarrassing losses to Raphael.

I think Rodgie may be able to grapple with the phantoms of his fertile imagination for some time yet, because last I heard, Raphpha was exploring the possibilities of joining the Bog Snorkelling Circuit. Apparently Onkle Dony was well impressed with Muurya's re-emergence as a new and mentally refreshed opponent after his sojourn in the Welsh bogs last spring.

Senti is too polite to say it himself, but he meant the histrionics.

True, Fed was always one of the most cerebral players around, the old fox(or is it eagle?) knows the good opportunity when he sees one.

However we mustn't forget that aside from 250/500 events he still has his cheesy 1500 points worth exhibition waiting for him at the end of every year when the Big Three (amazing out of this world athletes and warriors that they are) are severely exhausted from the overcrowded and unfair ATP schedule which allows the old man to reign free over that cheesy event and remind himself of the days when ATP tour was his personal playground.
