Also, the racket seems head light, but I have weighed the racket and the strung weight is 325g. I thought the unstrung weight was supposed to be 320g.

I've removed the hologram sticker and it has the not for resale underneath. I cannot tell the difference between an original and fake racket, so please let me know what you think guys. If you need more pics let me know and i'll upload more, thanks.

looks okay to me but I haven't removed the buttcap before to see what it is like inside. In my experience the fakes that you get directly in china say 12 oz (don't remember if it's 12. or 12.0 or 12 but you get the idea), instead of 11.3 oz which should be the Asian version. Also, the fakes I have seen don't have the red dot in the center of the hoop, nor did they have a leather grip. If yours is a fake it would be a pretty good one.

have you tried playing with it?

thanks for the reply. I haven't had a chance to hit with it yet because the weather is not too good at the moment. Hopefully, i'll get on the courts tomorrow.

The only worry i have is the strung weight which is 325g. The unstrung weight for the k90 asian version is 320g, so shouldn't the strung weight be around 345g? Also, i read somewhere that the fakes have wilsontennis.com on the top of grommet, as does mine. So, although it does look right and feel right these 2 thing are bugging me quite a bit.

320 is an avarage so some will be higher some lower also some strings weigh more than others I wouldn't worry about the weight too much

I'm sorry, but your racquet appears to me to be a fake.

Two things in your pics are dead giveaways:

    1) Inside the buttcap trap door should be a black hard plastic or graphite unit with one or two holes in it, either round or oval. Beyond those holes is a porous foam. It appears that your racquet does not have this black unit and that the foam is non-porous. If I were looking to buy a frame and saw this inside I would immediately walk away.

    2) Just below the PWSs there are black stripes that should intersect the grommet hole immediately below the PWS. On fake racquets those black lines do NOT intersect the stringhole.

I've weighed 5 or 6 AK90s and never seen one below 332 grams strung. Strings can make a difference here, but even if your frame came in at 335 strung as it ought, I would still say it's fake because of the above.

    Sorry man.

it's a bit difficult to make out, but there's 4 strings on the pws and 1 on the slope, if you know what i mean. So, it does look like 5. Let me know what you think, thanks.

thanks for the reply. I got the racket yesterday and thought there was an issue with the weight of the racket, it does seem head light, but i thought it was weird that the strung weight was 325g when the unstrung weight of the racket should be 320g. Anyway, i guess it's a fake, thanks for the quick reply guys, nice 1.

It's hard for me to say then. I've strung a friend's two AK90s which I really think are fake. The giveaway for me was the lack of a leather grip on his, lack of hologram sticker, lack of red dot. Also, when strung up one of the sides of the mains don't really stay parallel to the next main, as if the grommet spacing is a bit off. Yours seems to be better.

However, with your latest closeup, the spacing of the holes look a bit suspicious. If you look at TW's pictures of the K90 there are clearly just four holes on the PWS area.

    http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/viewlarge.html?PCODE=K61T90

Sorry if yours is a fake, but my friend plays amazingly well with his and I haven't bothered to tell him what I think because he loves them and they seem to work well for him.

*edit* didn't see your post until I posted. Anyway, try them out and see how you like it. Better luck next time.

I have two AK90s and the only differences that I see are the foam in the butt cap and the weight. When I remove the butt cap I can see foam in two separate sections. Also mine weight in at 340 strung.

However the obvious signs of a fake do not appear on yours: <300 grams, head heavy, Wilson logo placement on the throat, N version slanted grommets instead of flatter K version, no foam in handle, incorrect PWS string holes.

    My take: REAL

In the last year or two the counterfeiters have become much better at copying, so the signs you outlined are a little outdated, sadly. So for reasons already explained I think the racket is fake.

If you think about it, counterfeiters will take anywhere between 6 months and around 2 years to copy a product (we have the same problem in the industry I'm in) so it looks genuine to the untrained eye. There will be some excellent copies around for the forseeable future, but Wilson know this and have (allegedly) lined up a new release ready for the 2010 AO. Then it's back to square 1 for the counterfeiters and you'll spot the fakes a mile off for a while.

This of course probably means that Federer goes back to playing with a pj, I doubt he'll actually switch rackets next year.

thank you, there are some differences between my racket and the one in the link. The only one that is quite obvious to me is the strung weight of the racket. Anyway, i'll see how much potential this fake racket has tomorrow, thanks.

    Looks fake to me.

Underneath the buttcap there should be a plastic plate with two oval holes in it.

There should only be 4 crosses at the PWS, not 5.

325g strung is way too light. It should be at least 335g strung.

Don't forget that most racquets sold in China are fakes.

If what everybody else said isn't enough, I'm holding an Asian version of the K90 in my hand right now and comparing the pictures of the PWS on yours and on mine, I can tell it's fake. Either that, or mine's fake :p

I hope it plays well though!

Thanks for the plug for my site. The grommet strip says wilsontennis.com, which tells me the racket is either a fake, or someone stuck a grommet strip from an NCode on it....

I got it for £75 but i got in touch with the guy who i brought it from and told him that it's a fake. So, we both came to a deal and he refunded me half of the money and i keep the racket. Also, i've hit with the racket and it play's quite well for a fake, so i'm happy.

If you are absolutely sure the STRUNG weight is 325g then I'd say its a fake. Strings normally weigh 15g give or a take a few grams.

Can you give me some Chinees links identifing the 'real' AK90? I can use that to send to a friend in China so he can order the 'right' AK90?

    Thanks!

    Yep, definitely fake. Sorry.

The weight, the lack of gripsize label under the buttcap, the drill pattern in the PWS area r all fishy.

toeknee's Pic above is definitely genuine

Easiest way to tell a genuine is from the PWS area. A cross string should come out of the right hand bracket of the (K) logo. see above pic.

I played that exact same fake before.. It felt tinny compared to the real AK90..
But it looked 95% like an original would. So scary.

My impression (and I could be incorrect) is that Wilson registered the trademark on this frame (or on Karophite Black) sometime during the production run - so frames manufactured more recently have "R" and older frames have "TM".

What do you mean by "except for the butt cap"?

what i mean by the butt cap is underneath the buttcap there should be a plastic plate with two oval holes in it.
my AK90 have one hole in it.. comparing the K90 i purchase from stevewcosta his K90 have two holes, now is there any discrepancy between the ovalholes of AK90 and the K90 here?

Interesting thread. My question is: what 90 frames are being used? Generic ones that match the authentic k90?? How does a 'fake' actually hit on the court?

Every K90 and AK90 I've looked at has the plastic plate. All the AK90s I've looked at, and all the K90s I've looked at have had two oval holes, except one: I saw one AK90 in China with two rectangular holes in the plastic plate, one hole slightly larger than the other.

If your racquet doesn't have the plastic plate it's fake.

I heard once that they are using the HPS 6.0 95 mold for these fakes, but I don't know where I heard that.

Your second and third questions reflect a form of madness: there's no way you'd ever want to use this junk. They may use some authentic Wilson mold, but the materials and manufacturing would be of the lowest possible quality, certainly not braided graphite/kevlar, certainly not to spec on weight, balance, swingweight, flex, etc. The only thing the counterfeiters need to do is trick you into buying it. They would probably laugh quite loud if they heard that someone was actually using their junk.

geez all this time I'd been playing with a fake one geez, anyways is there a way I can get back from the seller? I mean can I get a refund or something? I paid for it with the whole amount almost $215.00 due to Philippine currency..
or can I e-mail the Wilson company in my country to let them know that there are stores in huge malls selling fake wilson k tour?

It would be nice of you to tell Wilson that stores in malls are selling them. They may not know that. If you bought yours from one of those stores I'd march in there and demand a refund. Say that you know for a fact that it's fake - you could even say that you gave Wilson the serial number and they confirmed it's fake. I think lying to crooks is morally justified.

You can also call Wilson in your country and ask for the names and addresses of the authorized dealers there. You should be able to get a genuine racquet from the authorized dealers.

plus i checked and rechecked the pws holes its 4 plus the weight is consistent with the label and the only thing that's really different is the butt cap? im really confuse.. is there any discrepancy with the old AK90 prodction with the new AK90?

Post some pictures, especially of the open buttcap, PWS, headguard, etc.

Fakes do have the 'not for resale without sticker' writing, however.

    You have a FAKE one!!!

There are other things that you can determine if its fake:

    1. The "Wilson" font at 6 O'clock needs to be about 4-5mm wider than the grommet. Where the "n" of "Wilson" is 4-5mm outside the grommets

    2. The red shade in the specs of the inner throat should be 80% of the box

    3. The font of the specs are crisp for real and fuzzy for fake

The easiest signs that determine real or fake are the drill holes and how it lines up with the font

    Hope that helps!

I have 3 AK90 and 2 US K90s. The fonts are all identical

How do Fake AK90s hit on the court??

They are terrible! The racket feels very flimsy. Either the head is much too light or the head is too heavy. I've have 2 fake ones in the past. I knew they were fake before hitting with them, but still wanted to review it.

Even if you hit them dead in the center, there is not much plow through or power. It does not feel very solid and it basically feels hollow. Very similar to the rackets you buy at Walmart.
