Damn rain is killing this tension. I know Federer uses the first set to analyze so nothing is definite yet, and Roddick is playing a high-risk game at the moment...

But damn this is starting off crazy.

Damn... I thought the forecast was supposed to be yesterday some rain, and today good weather... oh well....

Thing is, I wonder if Roddick was playing on adrenaline. If so, rain delay is real bad news for him, but it's just the start of the match.

Nice BH half-volley winner from the baseline in the first game by Federer (it was the first game, right?).

At first, I was like, "oh, there's the Roddick volley again..." *cough* but then he pulled off some very surprising volleys. I'm not declaring Roddick a good volleyer yet (lol), but damn, I was surprised...

Slice backhands into net, forehands into net, and the grounder forehands were all ugly though. But again, Roddick is clearly going for the high-risk game (not that he has much choice). And Federer is most likely as always, just scoping out the first set performance (and probably confident Roddick's game will tone down too).

Roddick has gone all out to win the first set, with some surprise tactics along the way. To keep using these tactics he HAS to win the first set otherwise he will have to scale back. So far so good tho, he did superbly to answer the 0-40 challenge right after he broke, three winning points at the net.

This match is certainly a clincher so far. Will Roddick continue to break Federer?? Will Fedderer come back??? I hope the rain would let up. I wonder why they did not suspend the boy's final also?

Fed is going to regroup but it is still smazing how Rodick is able to save those breakpoints.

The rain this is really a mystery. The same thing happened yesterday when Centre was suspended and the rest played on. Bad news for Roddick this time IMO who needed to keep the momentum going and good for Roger who needed to take a deep breath, re-group, and come out with his A game.

My assessment so far is that Roddick's plan is to come out firing on all cylinders to try and demoralize Federer early so that perhaps Federer will mentally fall apart and feel like he's being overwhelmed. So far it seems Roddick is trying to do just that, but Federer is fighting back pretty well. The level of play of this match is about as high as I've EVER seen in tennis.

Actually, this is very similar scenario to last year's US Open. Roddick manages to get through a very tough semifinal, and then gets really pumped up for the final and comes out with adreneline just popping out of his pores. I've never seen Roddick play as well as he did in the US Open final last year, and so far, he's playing even better today. So far, he's doing to Federer what he did to Ferrero at the US Open last year. Can you say "Shell Shocked"?

On another thread I was saying the main diference so far between the two of them was the attitude: Roddick is showing Fed and us all he wants to defeat him and be the champ, that's the attitude for a final match I think.

Another fact we should consider is that Fed is not putting his first serve in, he threw a 128mph first serve but I think he needs to focus on varying the placement and heaviness of this first serve to play more safely, reduce tension and prevent Andy attacking the ball.

Here they are, warming up again. Let's see how this rolls.

I think Roddick rarely loses when he get's to the finals of a tournament. Can anyone confirm this?

We'll see if Roddick calms down a little after this rain delay and plays more like a mere mortal. I don't think he could of been more pumped up and firing at the beginning of the match.

What a lob from Fed, and Anddy going into the net, great match.

I remember Scottsdale final early this year, Roddick lost to Vincent Spadea, don't remember the score I think it was 1-2, anyway that was not such a big tournament.

Roddick is doing to Federer to-day what Maria was doing to Serena yesterday. He's made a statement that he's going to win. Period. Amazing to watch.

    Step One: Done...
Roddick took the first set that he needs against Federer.

Federer hasn't brought up his A game yet (nor his B game)... I'm expecting Federer to bring his level up this next set so I think this is where it gets fuzzy.... All we can do is wait and watch...

But Roddick's only chance of this match was first to get the first set imo and that's done, but so much more to be done... At least if you want Roddick to win anyways.

Obviously, there's a lot of tennis to be played here. And Fed could very well win this.

But I would hope that Andy's level of play silences the one-trick pony references.

The player who is looking ordinary out there is not named Roddick.

It's good stuff so far.

Roddick extremely big serve is really taking a toll on Federer. Roddick is certainly targetting Federer's back hand.

Man... I've seen Federer's slice a lot all the time... but today, it looks especially NASTY!!!!

First set is pretty much easily in Federer's hand right now, but Roddick has to still use this set to get his serve back on track...

Fed is playing very passively at this point. Even though he is 4-0 he is not dictating play out there. He needs to get into control of this match.
    He doesn't look confident enough.

    4-1 (2nd set) Fed leads

Whoa, andy broke back. This isn't huge news... but since when do you see Roddick setting up and hitting a winner both with his backhand on Federer? His backhand is more solid than his forehand at the moment (though he's living/dying by the fh)

But that was amazing when Roddick's let-cord ball drooped like inches from the net and Federer got to it and drop shot back.

In this second set Fed's reaction, mobility and agility seem better than first. He needs to turn his accuracy engine on and try to win this second set. He looks like having a bad day today, had a 4-0 lead and let Andy come back to 5-5.

What worries me is the guy stays playing cold as ice.

If this thing goes to Tiebreakers, fed will lose. Fed is struggling on all his serves winning marginally through multiple deuces etc, while Roddick is just dominating 40-0, 40-15 serves.

Now it's even. Andy has started to show a little drop in accuracy and definetely drop in winners production, that's why Fed took the second set.
