roddick would have saved that set point. when he hit that crosscourt shot and came into net he should have followed the ball so federer wouldnt have had that down the line shot. It kind of seemed like any just stood in the middle of the court.

I believe that was the semifinals at Scottsdale when Spadea beat Roddick. Spadea beat Kiefer in the finals.

    Another break by Roddick !!

Fed just isn't putting enough depth onhis shots, while Andy is taking big cuts on the return and is having the match of his life.

Fed's bh is also letting him down.

This does not look good so far :(

I'm pullin for Fed as well. But the fact that Andy is playing him tough is great for the game. Hopefully this budding rivalry can live up to all the billing it's been getting lately.

    Yep, a rain delay.

But what a fun match so far.

We needed a men's final like this, and I don't think anyone but Andy could give Fed this much of a difficult time.

Fed isn't looking that sharp, but I think it has something to do with the pressure Roddick is putting on him. IMO, Roddick lost the second set more than Fed won it.

But there have been some spectacular plays by both players.

Hope they both come back firing after the rain delay.

The only thing i like is that Fed is a bit more aggressive now. He is still missing a lot but at least it is not in Andy's hands. Look at the winners per set :
    FED - Rod
    1st 7 - 18
    2nd 12 - 12
    3rd 7 - 3

Another thing i noticed is that Fed started to pick up on that serve of Andy's. He has 1 ace in 2nd and 3rd set combined.

One ad that Andy has is that Brad will be coaching him during the rain delay.

Andy is playing his heart out and Roger isn't. C'mon, cut the errors Fed and get mad or something . Some fire in the belly needed here (look at the guy across the net for cues LOL)

what is happening with federer's serves/general shine that we usually see? It seems that federer is trying to play an almost exclusive backcourt game, he doesn't go to the net like he has been doing. Seems a little shocked at seeing those Roddick serves. Federer has lost his shine....I hope he gets it back!

Do you guys think Federer isn't slicing off the backhand enough during the rallies?

Well, for awhile... Roddick's live or die by blasting didn't let Federer get any rhythm to build on and Federer's game hasn't reached it's A-state yet...

In the second set, rallies started to get longer, but both players had trouble serving a good portion of the set. They both got back their serve (though I think Federer took some off his first serve) towards the end.

Roddick's been blasting and poking at Fed's backhand, and Federer's been poking at Andy's backhand. At first, the Federer slice was throwing off Andy's power tactic, but Roddick started playing it safe on slices and so it hasn't been as effective, but it helped setup some net rushing.

But Federer hasn't been netrushing all that much, and it's been mostly baseline battles.

In the third set, both are serving well for the most part, but Andy broke Roger early on... and now there's a rain delay.

I think Roger's game is slowly tuning up, but it's nowhere near his A game, or at least, it's looking like that. I don't know how much Roddick's heavy attacks on the backhand and Roger's inability to convincingly return Roddick's serve today is getting to Roger's head... it must be driving him nuts since Roger is usually able to make Roddicks serve seem like nothing.

This rain is driving me insane...

Newer notes off my head... Roddick's running after the ball 90% and he's hit a few good volleys, but also some crappy ones. I'm tempted to say Roger needs to go to the net more. For sure, Roddick's putting on an aura of determination out there, more than usual. Though he did have his moment of gamesmanship/tomfoolery with the "psychological gas attack" on Federer's serve.

I have no question Federer is determined, but he's just not bringing his game to the top yet... and I don't know if that's gonna happen. I'd like to say it's mostly on Federer's part that he isn't bringing it up, but I am wondering if it really is Roddick's game that's putting the pressure and preventing Federer. This is probably gonna go against the thoughts of all those pulling for Federer, but I think it's mostly Roddick's game today... To their credit, Roddick has to be playing Gonzalez style and the game of his life to actually have this effect on Federer. But I'm becoming more and more convinced that it's a good combination of both Roddick's game and Federer's day.

But you look at the rallies and Roddick IS SCRAMBLING TO GET BALLS that Federers opponents weren't getting in his previous matches here.

You look at the rallies and aside from a few awful points, most of the rallies Federer's hitting great shots until #7-12.

And Roddick's just happening to get balls that are going deep or keeping Federer at bay.

do you think the fact that federer doesn't have a coach to talk to during the rain delay will create a difference?...and I think Federer isn't playing his B game contrary to McEnroe's thoughts.

    Coda,

I slept for a bit last night... but I was so dying to watch this match... I love both players, it's a big match to me.... and so I ended up unable to sleep after awhile. Ended up with two hours of sleep last night (but I did get a two hour nap yesterday in the daytime).

So it wasn't so bad... but for the whole championships, I've been torturing myself getting up at 3:30am almost every day, usually going to bed somewhere between 9pm (maybe twice) and 1am (probably 5 times I went to bed that late).... Some days I've had to resort to sleeping during the day time. Some days, I'm barely there after all the wimbly coverage lol.

In a way, I'm sort of glad I decided to take a huge break this summer and just work on independent projects instead of getting a summer job or doing summer school or internship (though we should be striving for internships lol).

    Thanks for asking!

Parents do indeed think I'm nuts...

I think the fact that Federer doesn't have a coach is what offsets the advantage he'd probably have over Roddick in situations like this. But who knows... some coaches don't work out. I'm sure he has people who watch his game and talk to him (aside from his gf that is).

In any case, it helps Roddick to have these Rain Delays... but early on, I felt it was going to help Roddick during the first rain delay, because I was under the impression that Roddick was playing on adrenaline (he just had that crazy aura around him--I'm sure the Roddick haters probably wanna say it's the fresh injection lol).

I think not having a coach is a real liabilty. As Roddick says Gilbert doesn't worry much about technique, but vets every player Roddick plays against and they come up with a game plan for that match. and you can bet that the game plan is fine-tuned now that Fed is dowh a set and a game,

this is the problem with Fed not having a coach:
Andy has a coach to help him regroup and focus and build strategy during rain delays. Federer can only meditate. It was well noted that jose hugueras helped jim courier win 1991 RG over Agassi by offer advice on Andre's weakness

I'm in CA, too, and also got up at 6:00am to watch. If it wasn't for all these damn rain delays, this match might have been over by now and I could have gone back to bed. Since I only got a few hours of sleep, I'll definitely need to get some shut eye once this is over before my tennis match this afternoon and before the big 4th of July party tonight. :)
