But tennis-lovers may be choking on their strawberries and cream at the tennis tournament – which starts tomorrow – with the news that organisers are considering moving the event back a week.

The championships at the All England Club in South-West London have been contested annually since 1877, barring the war years, and are fixed in the national psyche as a two-week festival across the last week of June and the first week of July.

But plans are afoot for a revamp

Nothing is yet decided, and any change would happen no sooner than 2014, but a club source says: ‘It is being discussed. It could happen.’

One reason for the move is that it would help Wimbledon stand alone as the key event in the sports calendar for its whole duration –

Similarly, the Formula 1 British Grand Prix is the same day as the Wimbledon men’s final, this year on July 8.

If Wimbledon started a week later, the Grand Prix would happen on the tournament’s middle Sunday, a rest day at the tennis.

A move would also extend the grass court season, currently four weeks long from the end of the French Open in Paris to the end of Wimbledon, opening up the possibility of new grass court events across Britain.

Wimbledon brass are usually rigid with sticking to schedule and tradition, but the fact they are discussing is positive.

I could see Halle, which is meant to be a joint event soon, having 500/Premier level status.

Well, they can't be THAT rigid or else they wouldn't have ever admitted professional tennis players in 1968, accepted the need for tie-breaks in the late 1970s or agreed to parity of pay for both men and women a few years ago. Wimbledon, like all tennis tournaments, has to move with the times and adapt or perish. If moving the tournament back a week helps the schedule and extends the grass season for possibly one or two more weeks, that can only be in everybody's interest especially Wimbledon's and I am confident they will see that.

Allowing professionals to play was driven by concerns over Wimbledon's prestige without the best players (the professionals) playing in the tournament, but yes, that was a progressive thing done there, and they basically forced the other tennis federations to do likewise. But Wimbledon didn't have tiebreaks at 6 games all until 1979. From 1971-1978, Wimbledon had tiebreaks at 8 games all.

Another week for some grass court tennis would be most welcome. Hope it happens.

I'd like to see it move forwards, so the season can be longer. I was tempted to vote for 'grass is for cows'. I don't like a lot players to do well on grass.

i doubt they'll move one week and let M1000 status to Halle, they'll want a M100 in England

In front of my computer, obviously
Please let this happen. Please USTA, give up a week on the summer calendar, it won't kill tennis in the US. Washington and Indy used to share the same week.
