Granny Clampett from "The Beverly Hillbillies".

Played by Irene Ryan, who shared my birthday (October 17). Ryan was appearing in a Broadway production of "Pippin" when she suffered a stroke that led to her death days later at the age of 69.

    Maggie M'Gill...

Miss Maggie M'Gill, she lived on a hill
Her daddy got drunk and left her the will
So she went down, down to Tangie Town
People down there really like to get it on

Now if you're sad and you're feeling blue
Go out and buy a brand new pair of shoes
And you go down, down to Tangie Town
'Cause people down there really like to get it on
    Get it on

I've been singing the blues ever since the world began

    Cars Hiss By My Window...

I lived in Santa Monica for a few years about fifteen years ago. My girlfriend and I once decided to have dinner on the Sunset Strip, hit a few bars, and see a band at the Viper Room.

I suggested that we get a room at Morrison's old motel so we didn't have to drive. It was literally the most decrepit motel I have ever seen in the United States. I asked the guy in the office if we could have Jim Morrison's room, and he laughed and said that we are very lucky today and can have it. It was really cheap, something like $45.

We went to Barney's, then dinner, hit a few bars, then saw the band. We eventually walked down the hill to the Alta Cienega.

In the morning, we realized that we were probably in the worst motel in Los Angeles. The room was not even suitable for junkies. There was a thirty-year-old television mounted on the wall, and everything else looked older and more decrepit.

It wasn't a bad neighborhood, but I worried if my car would still be there. Room #32 is the one to the left of the sign.

That's alright, mate! You made me remember a piece I posted 717 days ago in tribute to the best fortnight of the calendar. I still have it on my iPhone "notes" section and went to it after your post. Most of what I write seems banal even a day or two after posting but this poem still reads quite nicely. Do you remember "Words of Wimbledon"?

    Words Of Wimbledon (written 7/10/11)

Long Summer eves filled with play
The finest of skills on full display
Balls struck with finesse, spin and might
To dazzle onlookers' eyes in delight

White chalk flies as yellow spheres bound
Aimed to corners so rarely found
An ace fired straight to the "T"
Then one spun near the 90th degree

Now silence falls late Sunday night
All but a few have taken flight
The Fortnight's fans have dispersed again
Some leave in joy, others in chagrin

They came in throngs in hopes for glory
To watch new stars play out their story
    Once-hot Supernovas crash to ground
Mute disbelief becomes their partner in sound

These sights, these sounds from green hallowed lawns
Lead us back each year as new Summer dawns
Hopes for the Future, thoughts of the Past
Blending to form each fan's forecast

What will next Summer's Fortnight bring?
Will it be Joy or tears' salty sting?
One thing for sure as Sunday's Sun sets
We leave these grounds without regrets.

The long winter nights in Siberia spent by Dr. Zhivago and Lara! "Somewhere my love..."

A definite top 10 movie on my list...Sir David Lean was a master and the entire cast was unbelievably talented (Sharif, Christie, Steiger, Guinness, Geraldine Chaplin, Tom Courtney, Ralph Richardson)!

Was Hunter hangin' with Roland the headless Thompson gunner while loathing Las Vegas? If so, Warren Zevon would have suggested sending lawyers, guns and money...you know what will hit the fan!

I sometimes make a "run" on my pedicab for Copenhagen chewing tobacco for bar customers in my work zone. The local drugstore chain sells only cigarettes and the nearest retailer selling the chew is a mile away.
