He didn't say much about the WTF because that was much later in the year and no one was talking about it yet.

The main concern was if he would try to play the olympics so that's what he talked about, no?

Nadal has shown how much the WTF means to him but he can't get over the hump.

Of all the tournaments played why do some call the WTF the most meaningless?

Nah, you can just lose 2 matches and still win the title.

Given that one can lose yet win,vs. an event you must win to win. Only the 3rd place winner ha lost but won a medal.

Well using that logic, a masters 1000 is superior to the olympics and WTF. You have a more stacked draw which the olympics lacks and it has a sudden death format which WTF lacks.

As I already said, if Nadal never wins the WTF I don't care one bit. I would not trade any of his slams or his SOG for a WTF title.

    The community decided:

WTF are more important in the eyes of the most -

    - Nadal and Murray fanboys, sorry but you'll have to accept that the majority thinks WTFs are more important.

For one thing, they're not yours to trade. For another, nobody in their right mind would trade 1 Slam for 1 WTF; not in this day and age when Slams mean everything and a half. And finally, fact is, 1500>750, which puts the WTF at a clear tier above the SOG. But that's according to the ATP, what do they know, eh?

My god, people need to read the OP's question. Which has greater prestige and value.

"Difficulty" is not part of the question. Sure, WTF is a more impressive accomplishment since it is more difficult to win. But that's got nothing to do with this thread.

Olympics has more universal prestige and value, this is an open and shut debate if people would just focus on the actual topic.

Also, your Wimbledon example is perfect, Wimbledon is not more difficult to win than the other slams but it has more prestige.

Like I said on page 1, none of it is really important in the big picture except to people like us that want to boost or tear down someone's resume. Slams are all there is when it comes to history.

QFT. The majority thinks WTF>SOG. It would be great if people stopped pretending that everyone thinks SOG>WTF when all the facts point to the exact opposite. You are entitled to your opinion but don't state it for a fact, when:

    History wise, WTF>TSOG
    Points wise, WTF>TSOG
    Money wise, WTF>TSOG

    Thank you.

Generations of tennis players have regarded the WTF as far more prestigious than the olympic gold.

Even if this generation of players value the OG as slightly more..i still dont think that is enough to overcome the tradition and history of the WTF.

Until only recently, when agassi won his OG...the olympics have been largely ignored and neglected by the best tennis players.

As a tennis achievement, there is no comparison. It only accepts the eight best tennis players in the world during the year and you must beat them successively in order to win...and there are no fluke draws.

The OG on the other hand has to be diplomatic in how they award entry to players limiting the number of entrants from each country....

Not to mention fluke draws and the like...

Which is the more prestigious, valuable, and important Tennis title for a Male Tennis Player to have?

LOL, I was not that specific with the question. You're reading too much into it. I just wanted to know which tournament people here think is greater. I may not have mentioned "difficulty" but that factors in too. If I knew "difficulty" would be a contentious issue, I'd have mentioned it too.

Prestige for WTF and glory for Olympics. Personally I'd go for WTF but the glorious moment/feeling of winning gold at the Olympics can not be beat!

For arguments sake, WTF is the Tour Finals plus WCT, two-in-one!:)

...Wimbledon is traditon and it is called The Championships, which is the singular most coveted title of them all bar none. Ask the Lavers, Borgs, Macs, Connorses (even Lendls), Samprases, Federers, Nadals, etc.

Overall, I'd say they're pretty close so I voted what I would choose if I was a player and went with SOG.

That said, I always valued WTF/YEC tremendously, it's certainly above masters titles and is definitely not a cheesy exo (as Nadal worshippers named it), I also think it's one of the hardest titles to win because draw is composed entirely of top players (no cakewalks).

You do realize this argument goes two ways? If WTF is so easy to win (you can lose a match and still win, oh my), if Nadal is such an adaptable and amazing player, if he had 2 times more chances to win WTF (at the least) than Fed to win Olympics why has he failed to win it so far?

Mr. Clay with 2 hardcourts slams and 2 Wimby titles. Mr. Clay with an SOG on hardcourts. Mr. Clay with 6 hardcourt masters titles. Nadal has more titles on hardcourts than any of Fed, Murray, or Cvac have on clay.

All the poll tells me is that:

No of Fed fans + Nadal haters = 73

No of Nadal fans + Fed haters = 51

Not a good sign for Fed already I say.

I think the WTF is more important for a career, since it has been won by an elite group, is only the top 8, is worth more points, has little possibility of a joke draw, and most of the top players all time have won it.
If the Olympic Gold was regarded as hugely important for a career, I would feel very bad for past greats such a Laver, who never had a shot at gold, or Sampras, who decided not to make it a priority.

On a personal level, I think I would prefer to win an Olympic gold (in Singles or Doubles) over the WTF. Simply because the Olympics are so iconic, and the glory and prestige would be amazing.

Of course, a Slam title >>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything else, but between the two, this is how I feel!

That's why you never hear me(and many fed fans) don't use Fed's Olympics result to hold against Laver, just like Laver's Grand Slam(2 surfaces) shouldn't be held against Fed either because it wasn't available to them.

However, if Nadal fans use Olympics result against Laver, then Laver fans can use the 1969 GS against Nadal. It has to work both way.

I can't see any player wanting the WTF more than winning an Olympic Gold for their country.

It's a pretty close poll for those in the tennis world, and most people outside, don't have a clue what the WTF is.

Pretty much EVERYONE knows what a gold medal is.

Thus, I'm sure players would rather have the OG in their display case. Unless of course they are poor, because I don't think the payout for an OG is as high (but it maybe in some cases).

Nope. I think you and I have made our points. Still a terrible generalization though. Some Fed fans, like me and 60-70 others (discounting trolls), still believe honestly that a WTF is a more valuable acheivement regardless of which one Fed has or doesn't have. Can you understand that?

If the answer is yes then we have nothing left to talk about unless you want a reasoning, in which case the answer to the above question should be no, but I may or may not give you a reason either way just because I can withhold it if I want to. :)

The Bryans become the first team in the history of men’s tennis to have all four Majors and the Olympic gold.

“It’s hard to even dream that we’d have the slam, all four at one time,” said Mike Bryan. “It all started back after we won the gold. It just felt like a huge pressure was released. Went on to win the Open and had a great summer. This year we’ve been on an amazing tear. Never had a streak like this. Especially at 35, I feel like we’re hitting our peak.

In the context of our career, it is probably up there at the top. I didn’t think anything could feel as sweet as the gold medal, but this one just feels like there’s a cap, a lid, or a ribbon around our career. It’s pretty cool. It’s something we never dreamed of, to try to win four in a row. It’s too hard to dominate in doubles. Maybe we had a little luck involved along the way. We just took one at a time. It just added up. Now we got to try to suit back up for the calendar slam.”

What I have learned from this thread:

Some posters believe 1 Gold Medal in Singles is greater than 17 Slam titles in Singles.

We have also learned that certain posters believe the WTF is the equivalent of a slam, and should be treated as such. Even though the WTF is best of 3 and can be won even if a player loses matches there. We have also learned that certain posters believe the WTF means more than winning RG, and is equal to Wimby.

It's only been best of 3 since 2008 (and in 2004 for some reason according to the scores). Federer won three of his WTFs in best of 5 conditions - and all of those without losing a match.

In 5 of his 6 titles he won undefeated. The only loss he's ever had in the WTF on the way to winning was to Fernando Gonzalez after he'd already qualified for the semis.

Regardless, it's not the equivalent of a major, nor an Olympics singles gold. But six of them is worth far more than an Olympic singles gold going by the long-term standards by which tennis players are measured going back to the 70s. The Olympic medal only become a top level achievement in men's tennis around the time Agassi won it in Atlanta and all the PR it attracted at home.

It's still best of 3 now, and while Fed won his titles without losing a match, you can still lose there and win the title. The same cannot be said for the slams or for the Olympics. The WTF is not equal to a slam, is not worth more than winning RG, and is not equal to Wimby.

Don't compare doubles to singles. If you do, Federer's Gold = Nadal's Gold (which is technically true, in the general world, but not in Tennis) and we all know you'd sooner shoot yourself in the head than admit that.
