The other thread/poll was started back in 2004 and only has 6 options, so I've started a new one and will add a poll after seeing a few more people's suggestions.

My choice - Gimelstob. Carillo still seems to get love (or hate) even though she's not on ESPN anymore thankfully. The brothers Mac also get mentioned. Chris Evert. Navralitlova, Shriver, MJF. I also know some of the UK people might want some names thrown in. Unfortunately there's only 10 poll options, but like I said I'll try to throw in the names that come up/are mentioned the most when I make the poll.

    Kevin Skinner.
We get him quite a lot in Australia, mainly with WTA.
He's usually having to go solo which is tough but the monotony of his delivery and what he's saying is simply dreadful.
Sometimes there'll be something interesting happening on court but he'll ignore that to drone on about what's on the WTA website.
He's the worst of the worst, no one comes close.

I don't want to seem sexist, but all the women commentators suck at commentating.

JMac by far. Saying that Nadal & Djokovic have superior volleys to Federer, what a joke!

    Mission unaccomplished.

Definitely the more annoying Jensen brother--forget which one (do both of them commentate.) Haven't heard him in a while.

Virginia Wade, Navratilova, J. McEnroe, Gilbert and Carrillo are my favorites. I know a lot of these are hated by TT, but I chalk at least some of that up to the pervasive misogyny on here (see quoted post.)

Andrew Castle is my least favourite.

Strangely enough, I actually like Boris Becker...

oh I started to do this earlier but got distracted. Oopsie.

For US based commentators, you'll probably need to separate the men and women. Here are the men:

    John Mac
    PatMac
    Brad gilbert
    Justin Gimelstob
    Brett Haber
    Jimmy Arias
    Harry cicma
    Chris Fowler
    Cliff Drysdale
    Leif Shiras
    Sam Gore
    Ted Robinson
    Darren Cahill
    Ashley Fisher
    Robbie Koenig
    Doug Adler
    Jason Goodall
    Jim Courier
    Bill McAtee

I enjoy Cahill, Gilbert, Gimelstob, Fowler, Koenig, and the mcenroes.

I just don't like listening to the females who commentate tennis. I don't know why, but their voices **** me off.

We get him over here (South Africa) during some of the Slams.
He's awful. Puts you to sleep in a few sentences.
He works alongside Wally Masur. Together these two can't properly pronounce any foreign tennis players name. And I mean not even one! They don't even try.
They're ineptitude is only good I guess for some comedic value, but that soon wears off.

I actually rather have a commentator when I'm watching a match as long they don't over talk. A solid one knows how to set the stage/drama and let it unfold itself.

Gimelslob is the worst. In Britain his closest competitor is Frew McMillan.

On the ladies side the most annoying are Chris Evert and Mary Carillo (gosh, and I used to like Chris Evert-Lloyd as a player).

Gimmelstob, is the worst. Incapable of being objective about American male tennis players. Insane predictions based on his bias for Roddick, Fish, Isner, and Harrison. The mouth that roared.

So many fierce competitors for this title, it's like a world tour finals. We have ...

Justin "how you defend your second serve is the most important talking point in my tennis vocabulary" Gimmelstob, both McEnroe brothers (though Patrick is less talented in all regards), Chris Evert and Martina (I'm a fan of their tennis rivalry, but this commentary rivalry is something altogether ... Martina might be edging this H2H, too, in the amount of time she talks, mainly about herself), Ted Robinson, Mary Carillo, Pam Shriver.

And the winner is ... Chris Fowler, in a sweep (like Fed at the WTFs).

I prefer the more low-key commentators, like Cliffie, Cahill, Mary-Jo, Lindsay Davenport and (because he can be delightfully odd) Brad Gilbert.

Added a poll. Tried to stick with analysts over pbp guys, and like I said only 10 options so 'other' may well win.

Jeff Tarango's also pretty bad, though I didn't put him in the poll.

I would probably mute the TV if not for Cahill. And Brad Gilbert is awesome too. He makes valid points but the sheer energy he brings is awesome, it feels like he cares for every single match that goes on, and in turn, makes me want to care too. John McEnroe is decent, though I wish he would do a lot more homework. His brother is appalling. But the worst one I ever heard has to be Evert. Heard her only a couple of times, so maybe I caught her at bad times but I didn't like it.

Gimlestob was right when he predicted Federer would get back to #1, but even a clock with no power is correct twice a day...

I agree Davenport does a good job! It great to have a recent great commentating...

    GimelCLOWN.

Jmac is appaling - for someone who is a legend of the game - he makes the most clueless comments / observations.

pmac - i actually don't mind.At least he does his homework most of the time.

like brad - his energy is great..he lives and breathes tennis.

Really? I don't watch much women's tennis, but her predictions seem to be fairly accurate and has insight on a lot of the lesser known players. For me Castle is by far the worst. Just awful every time. For instance apparently Roddick's serve is as good as it has ever been, but players now days have caught up to it.

I personally hate commentators who feel the need to mention the plural names of all players in a particular era.

For example: " Federer has certainly inspired the Ryan Harrison's, Bernard Tomic's, and Milos Raonic's of this world"

I'll invert your order (if it was meant as such). Chris managed not to be grating 1 or 2 times (could have just been nodding her head). Shriver is the most unprofessional, bitter person to ever get a commentating job.

Male: Justin Gimmelstob...as others have said, he's overly biased towards the Americans, especially Roddick.

Honorable Mention: Chris Fowler. Condescending to others in the booth with him...needs to stick to college football.

Female: Mary Carillo...coins one successful catchphrase which has been ridden into the ground.

    Honorable Mention: Pam Shriver...annoying hippie.

How about favorite... I always prefer Daren Cahill.

I don't see Giblestop or Castle - so I have to put Everett as worst - but it was a toss up with Patrick McEnroe and Brad Gilbert not far behind. Though Gilbert CAN be entertaining in small doses - and maybe for the wrong reasons

My pick would be Dick Enberg. His commentary is embarrassing. I can't be the only one that is tired of hearing him say, "Oh, my!" and "What a delicious shot!" and other comments that put tennis back 40 years.

I remember watching a Wimbledon match a few years ago, and he seemed to be completely infatuated with Rafa. He kept commenting on his biceps. That isn't something I want to hear when I tune into a tennis match.

my beef against Dick Enberg was he talked way too much, sometimes even while the ball was in play. IMO, he talked way more than any other commentators and that was a terrible thing.

haha i love these threads. the bottom line: its hard to think of a commentator who is actually good at their job!

i think recent pros like taylor dent, davenport, (even heard hewitt and agassi commentate before) are by far the best. everybody else is pretty dang horrible. i do like cahill and courier though, and goodall, koenig, and gilbert are fine as well.
