“Worst player” loses lawsuit April 28, 2010
Britain’s Daily Telegraph reports that it has won a lawsuit filed against the paper by British player Robert Dee, in which the Daily Telegraph and numerous other publications once described Dee as the “worst professional tennis player in the world.”

Dee, who lost a record-setting 54 consecutive matches on the Futures circuit, took legal action against dozens of newspapers and websites to defend his reputation. He has reportedly won thousands of pounds in settlements.

Instead of settling, the Daily Telegraph challenged the suit, and a High Court ruled: “The incontestably true facts are that the Claimant [Robert Dee] did lose 54 matches in a row in straight sets in his first three years on the world ranking ITF/ATP tournaments on the international professional tennis circuit, and that this was the worst ever run…There was no additional obligation on the paper to prove that Dee is objectively the worst professional tennis player in the world, in terms of his playing skills…it was simply a consequence of his unprecedented record of defeats.”—M.C.

There's tons of bagels and breadsticks in there too... But looks like he's starting to win a few matches.

Here is his website:

If you take a look at the press coverage, he shows the settlements that he is getting for his various defamation lawsuits. 12000 pounds or so for each one. Looks like this guy is going to keep living the dream for a while yet with that kind of money

losing in the first round of 54 consecutive tournaments would probably be too much for me to handle mentally... great to see this guy stubbornly continuing to do what he loves the most, though.

Glad freedom of speech is still intact in Britain. I'm sure the other media companies just settle to avoid incurring legal costs.

•Dee lost 54 tennis matches in a row
•Newspaper calls him 'world's worst'
•Court agrees with newspaper
A BRITISH tennis player who took legal action against a British newspaper after it described him as the "world's worst player" lost his court battle.
Sky News said Briton Robert Dee, now based in La Manga, southern Spain, took action against The (London) Daily Telegraph over an article written in April 2008.

The 23-year-old argued that the article was "offensive", and could blight his potential future career as a tennis coach.

The newspaper argued that its article was not defamatory when read together with another piece in the same edition, which the judge at London's High Court agreed with.

"The claimant is a professional player who did indeed lose 54 consecutive matches in tournaments on the international professional circuit during which he did not win one set.

"His losses were in tournaments which are under the jurisdiction of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals); they are world-ranking tournaments and attract world-ranking points.

"His record of consecutive losses was the world record equaling worst-ever run of consecutive losses on the international professional circuit."

In reality, she concluded, Dee could not be justified in his complaint and the facts justified the comment.

He got nothing...nada...

He won settlement money from his suits against the other publications though. If you look at the news section on his site there is a pic of a 12000 pound settlement amount he got from the bbc, but then he probably lost that when he lost this latest claim.

I dont think the kid is exactly struggling for money. Playing 3 years around the world without winning a match and then having the cash to sue the media points to a rich family supporting him.
