Looking in some videos around, trying to fund out if those girls do that natural... well I foun something interesting: they done the shreking thing on the court on games, but not on practice. That is serious, very bad and very serious.

Practicing: Azarenka Paris 2008, no screams: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yqnJvNPOEg

Practicing: Sharapova AO 2011, no screams: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6qvGHUxMiE

Practicing: Michelle Larcher de Brito, Maimi 2008, 0 decibels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZa1pvSFDe4

Michelle Larcher de Brito, "The Screamer", Wimbledon 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI22ZDn6K4Y

And the worst, and one of the sickests matches ever... Azarenka vs Sharapova, 2010 Stanford: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WPaDG6JWx8

Azarenka claiming she can't stop shouting... like if tennis was a torture or something: “I cannot change it, that’s what helps me to play. I have to keep going with the thing that helps me play.” (source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/wimbledon/8589772/Wimbledon-2011-grunting-tennis-players-are-spoiling-the-game.html)

Someone should do something about this, is too much. It's annoyn, its ugly, is disrespectfull. Like if tennis players are no educated at all. A ban? At least something to this players. If they brake their rackets, they miss points and thats good, that is no education and a bad example. Same should be with grounting.

Discuss.

I've seen Sharapova and Azarenka practicing -- they don't shriek at all.

I agree that it should be penalized. That'll stop it quick-smart.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/p...=grunting-in-tennis-proves-to-have-n-10-10-02

"....Thirty-three undergrads watched videos of a tennis player hitting a ball, sometimes with a grunt, sometimes in silence. The subjects had to predict, as fast as possible, the direction of the ball and where it would land, by hitting a keyboard key. And when they heard grunts, the subjects were slower and less accurate.

The researchers say that this is the first study on the impact of grunting in tennis. Now they’re examining how pro players deal with the negative effects of a loud player. But until the ITF rules, it’s up to the umpire to decide if a grunt goes too far..."

There's three active threads on the subject...

Wimbledon Executive Tells Grunting Tennis Players to Keep It Down:

I would rather listen to _____ than a Sharapova match :

Sharapova shrieking- in fact all pro players shrieking:

....and no top player will be banned.

Perhaps refective of increased anger as reflected in this year's increased media coverage on the matter.
Meanwhile, relax and enjoy the chipmunks:

I was at the US Open last year and Sharapova was practicing with Azarenka and they were both shouting but they were having a practice match by the intensity of their play. Maybe it's just in matches when they are running a lot and hitting at a high intensity.

Yeah, what is up with this annoying shrieking banshee stuff, if they can practice quietly, this shows that the whole thing is selective AND therefore, not necessary, i cannot stand to watch Sharapova because of this, +1 for a ban to this obnoxious practice.

I watched Sharapova practising in January a few courts away and I didn't think it was her - because it was silent. This was hard practice on a stinking hot day too... you'd think she'd be shrieking all the time...

No, the top women players work very, very hard during these practices. It's very impressive, actually, to see their dedication and determination. I've seen them practicing against Stanford NCAA players (men), playing games and sets. Another had two men on the other side of the net -- working her from side to side.

First point penalty in a Grand Slam match imposed by a chair after a warning and the shrieking would stop.

It is just that simple.

Agree, and by that moment, they would very fast see they don't need to grunt or would stop to annoy their opponents (and the crowd).

Como on WTA gods!!!

Do not hold your breath. Catering to star players is the (usual) 1st order of business. A handfull of whining fans are not going to influence the behavior of the movers of money, otherwise, some action would have been taken by now. The shrieking is nothing new, so ask yourself the reason why it still happens, with the tennis PTB (seemingly) not giving a damn about it...

Nah, point penalties/warnings haven't stopped the time wasters on the ATP, it won't stop the shrieking. It's a part of the brand now, almost like a running punchline. I don't even think the WTA wants it to end, any publicity is good publicity.

Talk about unseemly and ugly -- it's a black mark on the sport.

Maybe it'll happen after the Williams sisters retire?

Sharapova has a lot of star power, but she'll be on her own in insisting that the shrieking be allowed to continue.

I cannot imagine the sport without the time penalty. Imagine, they would even rest in some moments or whatever.

A penalty has never stop anything at all. Rackets are still smashed to the floor... but at least it stop a lot the thing with the penalty and if someone is doing something wrong that goes against normal development of the game, should be punished for that.

They should strip all tournament titles off the grunters... All the grunters and shriekers are basically cheaters.... that's as bad as doping!

... also all the time wasters!! they should get off the courts!

I think the reason these ladies grunt during matches is they can hit harder, put hundred percent with their stroke, just like karate and tae kwondo, they don't grunt during practice coz it is just practice.
