This is true, as much as I don't like her. She's the only one with a serve good enough to consistently hold. I actually think the guys love the security of playing after Serena because they have some general idea when they'll get on the court. AKA, she doesn't F around.

Uh oh, Li yelling at herself. Domi practically skips back to the service line and takes the game. 3 all. Love it when Domi is confident

I would like Amelie Mauresmo to start a thread with a very long, detailed title asking wtf is wrong with Sloane Stephens.

As soon as I write these words, she plays five good points in a row. Oh well, will wait and see if thread is still warranted :)

    Nah, she's done.

It's a shame she can't make her game rise to the occasion when it really matters. Stephens hasn't been playing her best either.

This match has been a mess. And I have a pretty high tolerance. What was Sloane's w/UE the first set? Like 3/17 or something. Is that a new record? And yet she'll probably still win :?

    Based on old mcdonald's rhyme.....

WTA had a match, in that match they had two players.

Here break, there break, everywhere break break.

WTA had a match, in that match they had...........

I hope Li Na teaches the winner of this match a lesson. But she can also be pretty erratic, so you never know.

Lol, my stepdaughter lived near there during the school year. We were walking down the street in Santa Cruz during spring break one day and the wind kicked up a little. She immediately dropped to her knee and covered her face with her shirt. Fear of sand storm. We had a pretty good laugh over that...

Well, since neither deserved it, I'm glad Flavia won. She's a veteran and it seemed to matter a lot more to her and she will appreciate it.

Well, in the end I'm glad Pennetta came through. I tend to cheer for the older player in this kind of match. But it certainly wasn't an enjoyable experience like the Radwanska-Jankovic match.

Isn't it really Weird, watching Sloan play ? Sometimes she looks like she doesn't care at all and tanking it. and sometimes she looks like she is trying hard. and then she looks like she wants to quit. I don't get it

And again more than 100 unforced errors in the match. I'm beginning to think that this is not an exceptional amount. :|

Exactly, it's so odd. There were times in the match where it looked like she was just standing around watching the game. Tip to Stephens, watch every minute of this match on replay.

Edit: by which I mean to spot the lulls in intensity. Although I'm guessing she's been told this happens.

Maybe it's her guilty conscience or saving face. When she was giving Serena a good fight in Brisbane 2013, Serena pumped herself up to win with come ons. Sloane had a fit, telling her coach it was disrespectful and then launched into several months of talking crap about Serena (including when a reporter asked her at early rounds of AO if Serena had given her any tennis tips and she said "to grunt more" or louder or better, don't remember exact words). Now she has painted herself into a corner in terms of getting herself pumped up (the crowd appeared to care more than she did today). Or maybe she really doesn't have any fire and that's why she couldn't understand Serena's come ons and took them personally.

You see, everything is always about Serena ;)

Actually think there may be a little truth to what I wrote before, but it always feels more like a spoiled rich kid that's used to having everything handed to her. I'm not saying that's what it is. She may care a lot but just not show it. But the way it appears is very up appealing to me. I like players that are passionate to win. Or at least are happy warriors. I think she will turn it around, and then look out. Look what Vika's done.

But the errors, wtf? Is her wrist still bothering her? I never heard it mentioned....clutching at straws for excuses here.

She did not get it either. Annacone's suggestion to hit the ball hard and up the middle and let Flavia make errors worked like a charm.

Sloane should have won this match if she had taken her break point opportunities to go up 4-0. She would have broken Flavia's spirit. She is so up and down. She doesn't seem able to maintain being aggressive. And her footwork is poor. Yes she is fast and gets to many balls. But between shots she tends to be slow and flat footed. She has a killer forehand but hits way too many backhands from the middle of the court. She should be running around her backhand every chance she gets and dictating with her forehand. It is a lethal weapon that she doesn't use enough. Wanting to hit mostly forehands would improve her footwork tremendously since she would always need to be on the balls of her feet looking for the opportunity to crack a forehand. Unlike Sam Stosur who only wants to hit forehands, Sloane is so fast that she could cover her forehand side even if she camps out in the backhand corner. I'm sure that Annacone would be working with her on that as it is so commonly seen in the ATP.

Annacone mentioned that he wanted to see forehands from Sloane. Should separate the 30 and over bunch from the young uns. Juniors, Seniors, and the rest. Radwanska and Halep are honorary Seniors.
