That Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia has the right athleticism and amazing timing and technique on some shots. She just needs harder focus for now, as she makes unexpected errors in advantages.

Anyway, beating Mattek-Sands is nothing to sneeze at.

    Great to watch.

glad to see both matches are on TV:

15:30 Bouchard - Peng (WTA Indian Wells)

17:00 Halep - Nara (WTA Indian Wells)

    EST

Bouchard's task is not negligible at all.

Keys awful so far against Vinci. Roberta actually playing non-boring tennis at times.

Mary Carillo and Lindsay Davenport must have some serious butthurt about Serena. First they were blabbing endlessly during the Keys match about how there is so much media pressure on the young Americans (women) and how hard it is for them to deal with it. They say the excessive attention is because Americans are so starved for a good story (I guess coming back from near death and chasing historic records isn't much of a story). They didn't even bother to backtrack and say "who will take over when the Williams sisters retire" or anything like that. Then a few minutes later they were talking about how players used to win slams as teenagers, like Seles, Graf, and Hingis but don't anymore. I would think I was being a little over sensitive, but it's not the first time...

I know, why do I even bother, but I just think it's kind of crappy if you're talking American women's tennis. They barely showed her during the Olympics, too. I guess she's so good she belongs to the world now. I'm sure that's the only possible reason

I dont think anymore than any other country. I dont get the sense of it anyway. My impression is there is alot of pressure on any player trying to make the top 10.

To me it seems like they're always searching for the next big thing. They win one big match and everyone jumps on the bandwagon. But it's tennis media not so much mainstream. But probably not as much as Genie and Laura/Heather are getting.

Lindsey said she thinks there will be another great teenager. I dont know about that. I dont ever see that happening. These girls all seem to be coming into their own at 22 or 23 now.

Anyway, seeing Vinci's celebration and interview made me really happy that she won. I feel like all of the young Americans that I've seen lack the drive/passion/fire of a champion. It's sad.

How good is Mona Halep by the way? She's the best thing going in the WTA at the moment by miles. Hits hard, flat, deep from all over the court, never seems to miss.

I'm looking forward to her getting to no.1, not winning a slam, then us digging her out in the WWWH? thread over the course of the next 18 months.

Woz just schooled Jovanovski 6-1 in the first set. So why does she need to speak to Papa Piotr? She's way too dependent on him.

She was hurt. Or something. I almost think its in her head. No doctor would clear her to play if he thought she couldnt. That was just, well I dont know what that was.

She is REALLY good. She plays the angles and the geometry of the court better than anyone that I can think of. Very Hingis-esque in that regard.

Great footwork and groundstroke mechanics as well.

She doesn't have much power, she is more like Errani
I watched her playing Aga, Radwanska should have won, she didn't because was not as determined as Halep was, could not finish points she should have

Anyone with bit more power will blow Halep off the court, as of right now at least

Sad about Vika - clearly came back too early and probably won't play Miami now. I guess it'll be the FO before seeing her properly back, and she sucks on clay.

Problem is,she hasn't beaten anyone of note yet.

I guess either Li or Maria will win the title now,but if you go through the list no one jumps out as that likely to win. Li always flops when you expect her to start playing well. Maria will be pretty rusty. All the other girls are liable to flop at some point or another.

People love to forget that Victoria has 2 consecutive F in Madrid, F in Rome, F in Stuttgart... it's true Victoria is 0-4 in big clay finals (Mandatories/P5) but she's still much greater than most so called clay-courts specialists and can perform pretty well on the surface. She just needs the confidence by winning one of these big clay trophies.

I have been wondering from the beginning. My first gut feeling was for Vika, then I remembered she had been seen wearing a boot (!) last week, second gut was for JJ. I ended up picking "someone else."

First, sorry for your loss. But careful what you wish for! :)

I was recording it, but pretty much caught up to live and decided to pause at 2-1 and take the dog for a walk. When I came back to watch, my recording had run out right after I left and live action was up to 6-5! I can't believe I missed the breakdown and racquet smash. So bummed.

But anyway, she might be back for Miami. She probably wouldn't have been playing if it was the kind of thing that can be reinjured. Maybe a broken toe? At least you don't have to put up with people incessantly crowing with delight over her loss and going on about how Davis is the giant slayer and the next big deal.

Grounting/noise aside, Halep style is more comparable to Errani than to anyone else in top 10. No special shots, 3*R, Run Return Retrieve

I would heartily disagree. Halep does not play the game waiting for errors from her opponent. She actually constructs points. There is no brainless ball bashing or waiting out her opponent. She is consistent. Is able to change the direction of the ball easily and uses angles. Then after she has opened up the court, she hits a winner. If you look at the W:UE ratio of some of her recent matches they have been almost 2:1. When was the last time Errani had >20 winners in a math?

The only thing she is similar to Errani is her consistency. As TCB pointed out (excellently), she constructs points and tries to win them. I'd say her forehand is laser-like, despite not really being a traditional 'weapon'.

Ana / Svitolina match really high quality so far, enjoying it a lot. Ana is my Vika replacement for this week, pulling for her and Caro.

Not sure who I'll follow from Monday though...
