Federer's had the last laugh on Nadal this year, but 2010 is definitely Nadal's year overall. It was a disappointing loss for Nadal today, but on the plus side, he has done better at this year's WTF than he ever has before.

The 2011 Australian Open is a very important tournament for Nadal. If he wins that, he seals his place in history in a very big way by becoming the first player since Rod Laver to hold all 4 majors at the same time.

No, really?! Haha, it amuses me that anyone could even question this (although I'm aware that you're not questioning it)

here is a conclusion that anyone with an ounce of sense should be able to make :

nadal is scared of federer's forehand and his reliance on hitting to federer's backhand is his undoing. it is simply too obvious where nadal is going to hit the ball against federer; yes he does mix is up occasionally, but not nearly enough. at the end of the day, this was a straight forward win for federer, brought about not only by his brilliance but also by nadal's inability to vary his game.

During the match i was thinking the same thing.

Well, for me Rafa was not nearly at his best. Then again, I don't really remember a season's end indoors when he WAS at his best.

His first serve didn't have as much sting on it. In fact, he won more second serve points than first serve points. That suggests that the rotator cuff injury is legit.

I think Federer didn't really allow Nadal to get into the kind of rhythm he enjoys, which probably contributed to the higher UE count.

Nadal started very slow and Federer surprised him with his aggressive tactic, especially on BP. Both guys had like 2,3 BP each if I am not mistaken.

But it's clear that indoor is not Rafa's thing. He's not a natural indoors.

Big win for Federer. Hopefully this will give him confidence going into 2011, especially if he should meet Nadal in a Grand Slam. This is still probably the best rivalry in tennis right now.

Also, as for all the Nadal fans, I bet they mad.

LOL that's classic....

People say Nadal was not at his best, that term is used to much in tennis, similar to the usual at the press conference, 'I didn't play well, I could have played better'. Federer stopped Nadal from playing well, he went for the winners keeping Nadal out.

ROFL, posts like this crack me up. Hopefully, no one cares to this extent.

Nadal said he came to this tournament with great ambition but that his main goal is the Aussie open - bring on the AUssie Open!

Federer surprised Nadal with being able to control the high forehands to his backhands by playing them down the line to Nadal's backhand.

Petch sounded like such a twat. But on a more relevant note, I still can't believe how two guys who can compete with each other so fiercely on court can be so friedly towards each other. There're both such great ambassadors for the sport, and true champions in their own right.

fairly entertaining match, not to dramatic but it was high quality
Nadal's main problem today was his return IMO,it was terrible for his standards
and Federers game plan was great,he was aggressive and mentally strong,3/3 on break points and his backhand was more than solid
and damn, now the season's over, can't wait for AO

Being a leftie, Nadal's main shot is hitting the opponent's bh, even more so with Federer. The lower bounce and this court not taking enough spin made it possible for Fed to hit his bh with way more comfort, even the commies were talking about this. If this court took spin better Fed would have had a lot more trouble. This was the best BH clinic I've seen from Fed since AO 2009 final.

the difference in the match was how well roger's backhand was today.

it strange seeing roger convert all his break chances that doesn't happen often

Wow, I'm thoroughly shocked how a 29-year old past prime Federer handily beat a prime Nadal who just had his best season and playing his best tennis at the moment (obviously, he went 4-0 against the top 10 players in the world).

Paul Annacone is a great great man. He managed to do the impossible and convinced Fed to change his game. If only Fed had figured this out years ago......

Absolute beatdown. Federer was in great form whole week so crushing Nadal isn't surprising to me one bit. What a week for him -- beating Ferrer, Murray, Soderling, Djokovic and Nadal, all back to back.

Federer still has a lot of great tennis left in him, congrats to his ever growing legacy.

Nice win for federer. We saw some new quirks to the rivalry in the 1st set, but it was similar to other encounters by the end of the 3rd. set.

Fed wins this skirmish, but Nadal dominated the war this year.

Vamos. :)

In those terms then yes makes sense.

I still thought he played pretty good for being indoors.

After all he only has one title indoors.

Nadal has to look at the positives, and I'm sure he will. This is the best WTF tournament he's had to date, and he was the only player to push Federer in the tournament.

Such a shame a ankle robbed Nadal a chance of winning. He was a step slower than usual and couldn't track down Federer shots he usually does.

BBC guys say that Nadal did not play any near his best.

Am I missing something? I thought he played good tennis overall.

Rafa played good tennis in the first (roger v. good), very good tennis in the second (roger good), and good tennis at the start of the third before crumbling a little towards the end.

I'm not fond of the bbc team generally, today I felt they were repeatedly trying to tie Fed beating Rafa into Murray playing Rafa in a close 3 setter yesterday. So many comments from Andrew Castle (is that the right guy?) about whether it was Fed's tennis that was pressuring Rafa, or whether it might just be Murray's influence from yesterday contributing. It's not an isolated incident either, they repeatedly attempt to bring Andy up on tenuous links throughout the year, and I wish they'd just let it be a bit xD

First of all it was tough to play "his best" with such a good opponent on court.

Second, this WTF was Nadal's best indoor performance ever. For whatever it's worth he beat Roddick after sitting out one month, Djoker(ok, half eyed) and Andy Murray(who beat him the last 4 out of 5 times on HC).

To put it simply, Federer is the better indoor player. And the match was pretty tight even though Fed ran away with it in the end. Both had like 3 BP each.

He played good, but not his best. When has Nadal ever played his best indoors, though?

Nadal played pretty crap in the 3rd.I think he needed to hit firm slice returns of serve back instead of reaching so much with the 2 hander and barely getting to the ball or making feeble returns on the full stretch with 2 hands. Also on his own serve he kinda fell apart and played some poor shots on the last 2 points to lose his first break, and then again to be broken at the end of the match. near the end Fed just had to jog to net a few times and Nadal didn't put any decent pass attempts in,looks like he got nervous and started mishitting when Fed followed some balls to net near the end.
