XBOX 360 vs. PS3

I've had an Xbox 360 since the day it came out but have been thinking about making the switch over to the PS3. Has anyone made this switch??? I'm intreagued by the Wi-Fi access and the Blue Ray DVD player and the 80 GB internal drive... oh yeah, and Top Spin 3 has Nadal in the game! Any advice for or against the move?

I bought both on their launches and just recently got rid of all my 360 games. I had gotten the red ring of death on my 6th 360 and was getting tired of sending it back for another. I'll buy another when Gears of War 2 comes out. As of right now, I have zero regrets in only owning the PS3. Granted the online still isn't near the quality of Live, its getting better.

I'm on my 3rd 360 which could go at any time... I've never played on Xbox Live so if the PS3 online is not up to par I won't notice. Is there a difference graphically between the two? Does the PS3 run as hot or as loud as the 360?

Honestly, they are both quality machines... Weigh in factors like:

Exclusive titles
What your friends have (for online play)
Whether Blu-Ray (not "Blue") would be something you are interested in the near future
Price

These seem to be the most important things I can think of.

I prefer the 360.

The exclusive games are better for me and i'm a big fan of online Fifa 08, the same game on the PS3 was alot worse online so it's not for me.

On a side note.. does anybody know if there's a new xbox in development? The original xbox came out in 2001/2 and the 360 did in 2005 so you'd of thought they would have some good ideas by now for the next gen xbox.

Yeah been taking this all into account. Not really any exlusive titles on 360 that I want. The biggest driving factors are the built in wi-fi, Blu-Ray and the hard drive. Price is still kind of high which stinks but it seems like instead of price cuts- Sony just keeps giving you more for your money for their price point.

I own a 360 and love it but if you don't use live I'd say you're not getting the full use out of it and would go for the PS3 since the online for that is free anyway if you chose to go that route. Doesn't run as hot or loud as the 360 and supposedly has more potential for the future graphically though right now I can't really tell the difference and see them a bit on par with one another - though I like 360's selection of games much better.

Go with whichever has the games that interest you and will interest you in the future.

So is it free to play all of the PS3 games online? That is pretty cool- how much does Microsoft charge?

I like the games for the 360 better, but the PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player on the market, so you can't go wrong with that!

PS3 all the way, and actually its not an expensive machine, a bluray player is alreayd $400, and the PS3 is an all in one, search the on google the cost to produce a PS3, then decide if its expensive because Sony has lost over $1 Billion Dollars selling the PS3

actually it is expensive. it is so expensive sony is losing money producing it and selling it at a loss in order to stay competitive.

it costs them $800 just to produce it, who would buy it at that price when they can get an xbox or wii for $200?

Microsoft was selling Xbox systems at a loss, too. The original Xbox is also an example of this:

For the first time Microsoft is revealing how much money it is losing on its Xbox game console. Documents filed with the US financial watchdog show that Microsoft's Home and Entertainment division, which includes the Xbox, lost $177m (£112m) in the three months to 30 September. This is up from a loss of $68m in the same period in 2001. This loss is by far the largest of Microsoft's unprofitable divisions.

Since the Xbox was launched Microsoft has been forced to cut its price twice to boost sales. The documents also reveal that four of the seven divisions of the company are operating at a loss.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 loss per unit $126

An up-close look at the components and other materials used in the high-end version of the Xbox 360, which contains a hard drive, found that the materials inside the unit cost Microsoft $470 before assembly. The console sells at retail for $399, meaning a loss of $71 per unit — and that is just the start.

Other items packaged with the console — including the power supply, cables, and controllers — add another $55 to Microsoft’s cost, pushing the loss per unit to $126. These estimates include assumptions that Microsoft is getting a discount on many components.

Xbox division posts $1.9b loss

2005 said:
Following the decision to set aside USD 1 billion for Xbox 360 repairs, the year-end loss for Microsoft's entertainment and devices division has reached 1.89 billion - up 47 per cent from last year.

Sony eyes PS3 profit as costs decline

Sony PS3 makes Profit, 5 Million Units Sold

Sony has announced the financial data of the last quarter of 2007 that marked a profitable sales figure of 5 million units. For the first time since the PlayStation 3’s launch, the company showed a $100 plus million gain in the PlayStation division.

In the third quarter of Sony’s fiscal year (October to December), the company has experienced sales of 4.9 million PS3 units, 5.76 million PSPs and 26 million PS3 games.

The PlayStation business reached an exceptionally high profit of around $121 million. In the same quarter of the previous year, Sony had to bear a huge loss of $509 million.

It is obviously a great relief for Sony. Apparently, the credit goes to the reduction of the production cost of the PS3 to half.

I used to own a 360 but I seriously got tired of their BS. Add to the fact that their exclusives (outside of gears of war and Halo I can't name many more) aren't really all that great and I sent that sucker packing. Sure I would have loved to hold on to it just for Gears of War 2. To be honest I may just go the 200 dollar 360 the day GOW 2 comes out. I picked up my PS3 in Feb. I think. I've been quite pleased with it thus far. It has Wi-Fi right out of the box and you don't have to run out and buy some 90 dollar attachment, which quite honestly sucks. I took out the 40 GB hard drive that came with it and put in a 250 GB hard drive that I paid 80 dollars for, compare that to the 20 GB HD that and the 150 dollars that cost you to upgrade to 120 GB and on the 360 and it's a no brainer there. And last but not least the exclusives that have been my favourite since the PS2, SOCOM, Tekken, Metal Gear, God of War (due next year) and the new titles "Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, and Kill Zone 2 and well you get the picture. Also I just felt like I got screwed last year around Christmas time because I paid for Xbox Live and I didn't play online one single freakin time during my break because Xbox Live was effed up. And what does Microsoft give as compensation? Some POS arcade game that nobody cares about. How about a free month of Xbox Live Microsoft? I know that wouldn't have seriously hurt them to give that to us. And I'd also like to know why exactly am I paying to play on Xbox Live? I mean if I'm paying for a superior online play then why in the hell do I have to see a freakin Mountain Dew or Doritos ad everytime I sign on?

I took my Xbox 360 back to best buy when I got the red ring of death and I was lucky I had a replacement plan. I picked up a PS3 and I have been very happy. The Xbox was far too loud. The PS3 is VERY quiet. The graphics are pretty much the same, and most games are made for both platforms now. Add in Blu Ray and you can not go wrong. I would get a PS3.

I have a 360 for about a yr or so, no problems, knock on wood. The games are generally cheaper to get for the 360, that is a plus. I am planning on buying a PS3 very soon just to watch blu ray and perhaps MGS 4.

If you buy a lot of games, like one or two per month, 360 may come out to be a better deal.

I'd go with the 360. Why?

~Cheaper
~AWESOME online experience (Live is drop dead incredible! It may not be free, but you get what you pay for, and much more)
~Great exclusives (GOW2, Halo Wars, etc...)
~Better controller (IMO the ps3 controller feels a bit flimsy and cheap, much worse than the PS2 controller, which was much heavier, but felt more solid)

Say what you want about the ps3 controller, either way, i've had no problems with it except sometimes the trigger R2 and L2 are more sensitive.

I'm just pissed that I payed 600 dollars for it.

I've had no problems with it. On top of that, it can be used as another computer using YellowDog Linux.

Oh and Metal Gear solid 4 is one of the greatest games I have ever played. Online is nice too.

And just wait for Home. By then, the online will be better for Ps3.

P.s. One of the best games on the ps3 is warhawk. Way underrated.

I wish I could. I rented MGS4. Great game. Online was fun, but I only played it a couple times. The whole registration process was annoying.

The PS3 controller feels lighter than the PS2? You must mean the original Six-Axis which I feel was garbage. Pick up the new Dualshock 3 and its basically a wireless PS2 controller with motion controls available and should have been the controller Sony originally released if they would have just paid Immersion. Also I can attest to the PS3 running quieter and cooler. I've put in some long sessions and the thing is still cool. Now that I see more of Home and I've upgraded my harddrive to a 320gb, I may not even pick up another 360.

I just got my new PS3 and I have to agree that the controller feels way to light- almost cheap but so far I've had no problems, then again I am only on day 3 here.
