There have been 16 distinct year end number 1's since 1973 when the ATP first started it's ranking system.

    Nastase
    Connors
    Borg
    McEnroe
    Lendl
    Wilander
    Edberg
    Courier
    Sampras
    Agassi
    Kuerten
    Hewitt
    Roddick
    Federer
    Nadal
    Djokovic

There are only 4 of those who haven't won the season end finals in their career

    Wilander, Courier, Roddick & Nadal

Personally I think Nadal is going to win it one day. Never has been a player so focused and determined.

Nadal might win it this year?

This thread is silly on multiple levels.

First of all, the set of players in the OP is a more or less random subset of the distinct set of players who have been ATP number 1 at ANY points in their careers. Dec 24-31st is just another random week as far as the skill involved in being number 1 goes. It doesn't require a different skillset from being number 1 in June.

Secondly, at the time this thread was created, Nadal had a losing record at the tour finale. Not sure how anyone could have looked at those data and concluded that he was going to string together 5 or 6 wins in 6 matches to win the title.

Tennis from its early days (long before the open era) has wanted to know who was the number 1 player for the overall calendar year ie Jan to December. That person, in today's terms, is the Ye number 1. I created this thread 4 years ago to show that only a handful of YE #1's had not won the season end finals. All of the 4 that haven't have made the WTF final.

Clearly he was being sarcastic. It's like saying "look how lopsided Fedal H2H is" and then concluding "Fed will definitely win the next match".

Don't think he's being sarcastic. He does a lot of very serious and very high quality stats work. Such as his open era rankings thread which is one of the finest, most thorough and most extensive pieces of original work on these boards

Maybe if Djokovic pulls out he'll have a chance....
He might have won it last year had it not been for Djokovic which is pretty ridiculous

Man, I remember each and every one of those like it was yesterday.

Wait, actually I don't remember any of those. How many slams do they have?
