Very true. Cahill roolz! i like when he tells little stories about the players...like for instance: "Agassi was hitting on the court next to Nadal and he asked nadal if he could hit w/his racket...Agassi hit with it and totally hated it, and said the good playing is from the player, not the racket."

Killer Cahill takes the cake. He's the most analytical of the group, and I like that. Patrick McEnroe and Luke Jensen make good comments at times, but they can be annoying.

Luke Jensen is a good sideline reporter, very knowledgeable, and he's decent in the booth when allowed to do it (he's only done a few smaller tourneys.)

I really like Cahill. Knowledgable, nuanced, shows a depth of understanding befitting a former tour player. Knows when NOT to talk.

PMac and Cliff are just fine, though sometimes annoying and rather unspectacular. Pmac tends to lose his objectivity.

Mary Jo Fernandez used to be consistently pretty decent. She's declined in terms of consistency. Tends to play at the level of her commentating partner. If she's with someone good, she's good. If she's paired with someone bad, she'll be bad. Take the lead MJ.

Pam Shriver used to be OK. She's now horrible, trying to out-Carillo Carillo. She's also a Williams sisters shill. It's fine that she personally knows them and likes them. But, she needs to find some sort of detachment when calling one of their matches.

Mary Carillo about a decade ago on CBS was actually quite good. She's now completely unlistenable, with her excuse-making, pseduo-philosophical, Chicken Soup for the WTA player's soul, Oxygen/Lifetime musings.

Fowler is good in a college football setting, sometimes okay for tennis, but very often falls short.

Dick Enberg is like my grandfather in a nursing home (God bless him). He once had all of his faculties and shows glimpses of his former intelligence, but is now just trying to keep up and sometimes has no real idea what is going on around him.

I like MJ and Cliffy. They do pretty well.

I cannot stand Dick Enberg though. He knows virtually nothing about tennis. I would say Mary Carillo, but her comments are so hilariously stupid that I've come to enjoy her rattling.

During one of the women's matches Mary Carillo started talking about some actor and how he is so inspiring to her in this one movie. I was dieing with laughter. Then she made Mary Joe Fernandez go and buy the movie. Mary Carillo is such a nut. lol

I agree. Good calls from Darren. Really bad and biased commentating from JMac's little brother and Mary "The Rock" Carillo

I mentioned my opinion in this thread I made:

    http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=176174

Cahill and Drysdale together is the best ESPN has to offer. Both know alot about the game and both call the flow of the match smoothly. If a point is being played, they aren't talking about Jimmy Connors or Boxing references while a RALLY is going on. They're watching and then give their insight AFTER the point is over and before the next point.

With Enberg, he always tries to get a mention of an American player during comparisons. He always tries to get some American name thrown out there.

Carillo is very irritating to listen to. She keeps talking during rallies, brings up a Jimmy Connors reference every 10 seconds, and some other things.

Fowler is fine. He knows when to be quiet, and despite his limited knowledge about players who aren't' American, he is a decent commentator.

Jensen is good for court reports, not full time play-by-play IMO.

Patrick McEnroe is 50/50. I like his enthusiasm on ridiculous points, but he tends to keep going and going without ever giving the audience a break.

Mary Carillo for me. She has a lot of haters, but for me she's one of the most entertaining, and not predictable like the rest of the bunch. I like Cliffy as well, he and PMac have a nice thing going.

Well now, that's a whole different poll!

I went with Killer. Love him.

I'm really okay with most of them, and I'm one of the few who like Mary Carillo (don't throw things!). I'm also a big fan of Jimmy Arias! Jimmy and Killer together would be awesome.

Leif Shiras is underated! Can I get a witness?

Cliffy and Killer Cahill are good epecially together. They call a great match.

Brad Gilbert is hilarious. I wish he would come back. He make it fun.

Chris Fowler is a solid lead guy. He rocks for college football!!!

P-Mac is too much of a homer for the US. I am from the United States and it gets on my nerves.

I really like Leif Shiras of The Tennis Channel. If he and Cliffy teamed up it would be a great call. Leif is underated.

Justin Gimelstob has a lisssp. SSSSS!

Luke Jensen is solid roving reporter, much better than Justin.

Mary Carrilo is better suited for HBO's Bryant Gumbel then tennis.

J-Mac is funny and insightful. Good color guy. Good stories about the old days.

Bud Collins is Bud Collins. Not a fan, but man, that dude knows his tennis history. I respect his knowledge not his outfits.

Katrina Adams, not a big fan. Is flat and boring.

Martina Navratalova is the worst ever!!! Always glossing herself and Billie Jean King. Stop!!!

The man of the future will be Greg Rusedski. He does some calls for the BBC and Sky. I heared one call and really like it. I am biased of course. He sounds fresh and intelligent. Imagine a British Killer Cahill. British can be dumb as rocks and come off sounding like a genius. They just sound smart by nature. Save it, I know he is really Canadian, so don't email me again.

Mary Joe Fernandez is solid. Has good takes and lead ins. I like her. Not bad to look at either.

Pam Shriver is okay. She is a vet so she knows the game. I hate when she used to try to jab Brad Gilbert. Raider fan (Gilbert) would work her over everytime.

Barry McKay is good tennis caller. I like his style. Works well with Leif Shiras.

    Did we forget anyone???

Cahill, Arias and Navratilova are the best insightful commentators around. They can deconstruct a player's game, why they missed a shot, why they're losing etc in detail -- as opposed to second tier commentators like PMac, Drysdale, Mary Joe and Pam Shriver who are insightful to a degree.

The worst of the bunch are Luke Jensen, Mary Carillo, Dick Enberg and Justin Gimelstob. Not only are their observations much of the time wrong, you can't take them as an authority when you look at their careers. And unlike PMac, they don't have even a casual observer's analytical ability.

I know that Justin Gimelstob works for TTC but I like him. He doesnt talk constatnly and you can tell that he knows what he is talking about. He knows about every player out there and I kind of like his jokes. Also when he told
Fed that his challenge in the Santoro match was a "good challenge" and you could hear it over the court microphones. That was awesome. I hate Mary Carillo with a passion. She never shuts up! There has been big matches that I haven't watched because she got so annoying. The worst is when she is with PMac and all you have is one big discussion of how good Andy Roddick is. It could be a match that is 10 all in the 5th set and all they would be talking about is the Andy Roddick match that happened 3 days before. It is very pitiful. I really like Killer and Cliffy. I feel like they know the most about the game in the ESPN bunch.

Also I have herd that Rafter is doing some commentating for Australian TV. Now that would be good. My coach used to hit with Rafter and man that guy has some great stories.

    J-Mac, M.J., Cliff, Killer!

For all the flack non-T.C. commentators get, ESPN2 does a good job and gets these four on as much as possible.

Good stuff, they were good during the Ivanovic/V. Williams match.

I like Cahill I think he's been good, PMac and Cliff are okay and when Gilbert used to comment I thought he was funny. I can't stand Carillo she needs to be gone she says all these pointless things like the other day she was saying Fed's clothes are alway ironed and pressed so what who cares.

Killer and Cliff are definately the best by far in my opion.

Like some one said before, Luke Jenson makes a really good courtside reporter.

The big supprise to me this AO is Bud Collins. Ive never been a big fan of him before because he always seemed to ramble on. Now though im really enjoying his bits on the history of tennis. Its pretty impressive how much he knows and Im definately a fan of history, so i like listening to him so far.

It's got to be either Cahill, of Drysdale. Not only do they have the best sounding voices, or accents, but they are the most informative, and aren't always chosing the Americans as winner, because Mcnroe would rather walk on his head then see an American lose. How many r left in the draw right now. None.

Darren Cahill and Drysdale are the only non-aggressive commentators on that list who consistently talk about tennis related issues and show atleast a little courtesy. Let's see what they have in common... Hmmm...

John McEnroe is the best tennis commentator that there has ever been. He's right on 100% of the time.

Patrick McEnroe is pretty good but says some off things every now and then.

Mary Carillo has her on moments, but her off moments make her look bad.

Mary Joe usually seems to have no clue what she's talking about. It's a miracle she played professional tennis.

    Pam Shriver is nauseating.

Dick Enberg just thinks everyone is wonderful...

Bud Collins greatest achievement is retirement.

The next great commentator will be Andre Agassi.
