After seeing a few 5 setters, I wanted to open this thread. My favourite encounters are Fed vs Nadal 2009 AO, Fed Nadal 2008 Wimbledon and Nadal Novak 2012 AO.

That match was devestatingly awesome. I know the final that followed was also awesome but because this match happened first, it will always remain the "superior" battle in my mind.

    I love 5 setters!

    Best in recent memory

Djokovic-Wawrinka Aus Open 2013' 4th round, god mode wawrinka for half the match, Amazing one handed backhand capabilities that night, he really took it to Djokervic

Nadal Vs Verdasco Aus Open 09' semis 5, just awesome

Nadal vs Federer Aus Open 09' finals, nail biting for both Nadal and Federer fans, unfortunately ended like Fed looking like a fish out of water, perhaps he was too tired and disheartened by how much fight Nadal had in him

I have to agree. Djoko/Wawa was incredible. Djoko/Murray in 2012 was fabulous as well. Of course W final 2008 and AO final 2012 remain the landmarks. I loved Agassi/Connors at USO 1989 and Agassi/Wilander at RG 1988. So many thrilling 5 setters over the years. Just too many to list.

This was the best match I've ever seen, particularly the ebb and flow in the fifth set.

I would also suggest the 1980 Borg mcenroe Wimbledon final.

    In chrono order

    1980 Wimbledon Finals -- Borg d. McEnroe
    1984 RG Finals -- Lendl d. McEnroe
    2001 Wimbledon Finals -- Ivanisevic d. Rafter
    2003 DC Finals -- Hewitt d. Federer
    2005 AO SF -- Safin d. Federer
    2008 Wimbledon Finals -- Nadal d. Federer
2009 AO SF -- Nadal d. Verdasco (spoiled only by a DF to end it)
    2009 Wimbledon Finals -- Federer d. Roddick

Apologies to the 90s. I went away from the game and don't have any real reference.

Funny, I personally didn't enjoy the result in many of these but as fan of the game, I couldn't have been happier to have been watching.

I will say, though, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the most recent Djokovic/Wawrinka 4R matchup, much as I did the Roddick/El Aynaoui QF from 2003....but I'm not sure I put them in this group of my favorites.

Goes to show that in order to have epic matches you need to have an attacking player. No more good matches, bye bye tennis

Djokovic d. Federer US Open 2011

Not my favorite or the best, but a high quality match. Djokovic was on a tear the whole year, and both were playing attacking tennis.

It definitely is interesting how the best matches are always the ones that feature attacking tennis as OKUSA said.

    2012 Wimbledon 2R
    2011 USO SF
    2009 USO F
2009 RG 4R and SF (tense, but not particularly great)
    2007 and 2008 Wimbledon F
    2005 AO SF

    Participants should be obvious.

When you combine overcoming a two-set deficit, a one-break deficit in the final set, a 1-4 deficit in the decisive TB and arguably the greatest matchpoint-winning shot ever, it has to be Verdasco's '10USO R16 victory over Ferrer.

    1. Safin vs. Federer AO 2005
    2. Rosol vs. Nadal Wimby 2012
    3. Gaudio vs. Coria RG 2004
    4. Ivanisevic vs. Rafter Wimby 2001
    5. Del Potro vs. Federer US 2009

for 6th place would have to be a toss up between Murray and Djokovic at the US, or Djokovic vs Nadal at the Australian.

That last one was a great match, but it was only a best of three format.
