Where/when did you start, and where are you now?
4.0 -> 4.0 -> 4.0 -> 4.0 -> 4.0
Started at 3.5 in 2007. Had a terrible season, got bumped down to 3.0 for a match, and then was bumped right back up. Played 3.5 for 2 seasons, became a 3.5 playing at 4.0 for 2 seasons, was bumped to 4.0 in fall 2009, became a 4.0 playing 4.0 and 4.5.
Was a 3.0 weekend warrior from 2000-2006. Then played USTA in 2007 and was a mid-3.0. By Fall 2007 I was competitive with 3.5s and by spring 2008 I was beating most 3.5s. In early 2009 played 4.0 league and got crushed in Singles. Haven't improved at all in the past 1.5 years and now getting crushed in 2010 4.0 leagues in Singles.
1st tourney, C, draw of 64, lost in finals.
2nd tourney, C, draw of 128, won finals.
Next tourney, A-Open-ProQ, lost 4th round.
Lost 1-4th rounds of A opens in 10 tourneys.
Lost in 5th round of ProQ.
Took up motocross seriously, 50 races a year for 6 years.
Fell back to maybe between C-B, about 4.0 immediately.
3.0: 2006 - 2007
3.5: 2008 - 2009
You get the idea.
Played in HS and rec/intramural in college, played one season USTA 4.5 (got SMOKED early and often).
Self-rated at 3.5 for a season back in th early '00s, got bumped to 4.0. Been there since.
You are capping out at 3.5????
Hey I started in '05 too. Never played tennis before and I needed something for exercise. I flattened out at 3.5 after a couple of years in '07. Just can't seem to get over that hump into 4.0 territory.
3.0 last year, 3.5 this year
Yeah, it's a pretty big hump. It's hard to envision it happening. I'd better stop making stoopid mistakes.
Pro rated me as a 4.0 in 2000, went 1-3 ... I was not good enough to get offers the next year when our team folded, not bad enough to get leveled down either.
Self rated (with a new name) in 2004 as a 3.5 with a chance to play. I was bumped up to 4.0 and appealed down each year through 2007.
Became a permanent 4.0 in 2008 .. have stayed there since and I am hoping to make the next move (and last upward move) soon.
Started in 2005 as a 2.5 (never played tennis before that), moved up to 3.0 in 2006. Leveled off at 3.5 from 2007-2009 until I started taking private lessons. Now that I know how to hit shots the right way, I've moved up to 4.0 this year. Based on my results so far in 4.0 (slightly above .500) I would put myself at around 3.75 or so. If I can continue steady improvement over the summer I feel like I can be ready for 4.5s next year.
Self-rated at 4.0, then took me three years to work up to 4.5. This is as good as it's gonna get for me... now I just want to stay at 4.5 for as long as possible.
Played tennis in HS and was never higher than a 3.5 I took about 13 years off and started again at 3.0. After one season I was a 3.5 and then got bumped up to 4.0 the next season. I feel like I'm right where I belong. Somewhere in the middle of the 4.0 level.
ever thought about getting in better shape, and just getting every ball back (not neccesarily pushing) then you'd easily get to 4.0
2009 Esr -2010 4.0
You don't play at SanPablo, do you?
There's a bunch of orange shirted players there, some good solid 4.5's, some not quite, mostly using both hands.
2009 - self rated 3.0
2010 - 3.5
hacked around for a couple years in my 20's played 3.0/3.5 ladders but never any league/tournament etc...started playing at end of '08 after not picking up a racquet for 15+ years
missing USTA season coming back from injury (out since August) so likely will stay at 3.5 this season unless I run the table in Twilight and win a couple tournaments later in the year...
Nope, I play over in Diablo North.
My screen name is a combination of my not being very good at coming up with screen names, and the fact that my racquet comes with an orange paintjob
started playing in 1995 at age 40
initial evaluation at 3.5 by USTA rater in 1997(ish)
bumped down to 3.0 and went to sectionals
bumped up to 3.5 for several years
bumped up to 4.0 and lost a LOT for one year
bumped down to 3.5 and won a lot, went to sectionals on two teams
bumped up to 4.0 and playing about mid-level
Let's not make assumptions. I'm in great shape, thanks. I also happen to be almost 50. 4.0 might not happen for me. I can live with that.
2008: 2.5 (self-rated for combo season)
2009: 2.5 (played Spring and 5.5 combo as 2.5)
Formerly a nationally ranked junior -> sick of tennis -> no tennis for many years -> started again for fun -> realized how much I missed tennis -> Ok let's try USTA tennis -> love tennis again -> computer-rated 4.5. -> I'm awesome.
You are just a few years behind me, and I hit 4.0 the year I turned 50. Don't give up yet.
Same here, dates and ratings.
Well Helloooo Cindysphinx, I am delighted to make your acquaintance.....
Maybe we should get together some time and discuss the "hump" you were referring to earlier....
Was rated by a pro as a 3.0 in '99 or '00 (too old now to remember exactly which year ). I did well that year - won all of my matches on my men's team, my wife and I went to nationals on our mixed team. Thought, "this USTA stuff is fun, but traveling to these district/regional/national events gets kind of expensive, so not sure if I'll do it again
Bumped up to 3.5 the next year and decided to give it another go. Got my @ss handed to me playing doubles that year and decided I needed to give singles a try (I was about 30 at the time).
Next year, won all but one singles match at 3.5 and the team went to districts. This began a 7 or 8 year run of winning all or nearly all of my matches in local league and moving onto districts at the 3.5 level. At districts, however, I usually had about a 50/50 record.
Year after year I repeated the pattern - win almost all my local league matches, then only do ok at districts. The weird thing was, every year more of the guys I beat in local league were bumped up while I remained at 3.5.
Couple of years ago I was bumped up to 4.0 and this feels right ... for now.
Way too much time on my hands...
Just using Adult league matches for data:
2010 still in progress, the team won our Area championship...moving on to Districts soon.
I like this efficiency.
How come winning % goes down in 2010, seeing as its at the same level as last year?
I had said that making 4.0 was going to be my 50th birthday present to myself. All this accomplished was making me tight and too tense to play well. As soon as I threw that goal in the trash, I started to play better and enjoy myself more. If I get to 4.0, fine. If not, fine. It's all good.
Started USTA as a self rate in 2009 - 3.0
Am now a computer rated 3.0 that regularly wins 3.5 and am competitive at the 4.0 level (3-3).
Hoping for the double bump this year!
Age: Rating :
I plan to make it to 7.5 this year!
Started as self rated 3.5 about 3 years ago. Just got the bump to 4.0.
My tennis journey
Before 2006, played a few times a year at parks
2006: 2.5 played at STF C2 league
2007: 3.0 played at STF C1 league
2008: 3.5 played at STF B1 league
2009: 4.0 played at STF A2 league and Intercounty B (4.0~4.5) league
2010: 4.0+, playing at STF A2 league and Intercounty B league
201?: 4.5 (my goal) play at STF A1 league and Intercounty A (4.5& up) league
2004/2005- started playing with brother once a week. I had little tennis background: just some group lessons as kid like 20 years prior. Then got into it and played 3-4 times a week.
2006-self rated 4.0
2009- bumped to 4.5. I was injured most of the year and didn't play very much.
2010 -officially still 4.5 but don't play any tournaments or league-just back to weekend warrior stuff. My level of play is lower than when I was playing in 2008 when I was 4.0 which is fine with me because tennis is very peripheral portion of my life now.
All my 2010 losses have come in the 3rd set TB. Every dang one of them by 2 or so points.
Bad luck? More likely, it's me not being able to close out the match.
Going to shake that habit before Districts. :-D
Do you play at San Pablo, CA? I just played match there this past weekend...
18 OPEN (not rated)
Ive been playing tournys in the junior open div since I was 11. Just started playing some futures events in Europe, had done a few in the US prior.
Self-rated 2009: 3.5
2010: Still Self Rated 3.5
2008: Self rated 3.0 played in mixed and combo with a horrid record.
2009: Played 3.0 with a 6-0 record in Adult, 4-3 in mixed and 6-0 in Combo, went to state in mixed and combo
2010: Bumped to 3.5, 6-1 at Adult, going to State on my 3.5 team with a 12-0 record.
Looks like only one person has made a 1.5 level jump
4.0 ---- 2004-2005 (struggling to win every match, lol)
4.5 ---- 2006-2009
5.0 ---- 2010-
2011 -hopefully 4.0 but prob 3.5
2012 -more likely 4.0
Verified at 3.5 in 2000.
Bumped down to 3.0 for 2001 but played 3.5 anyway.
4.0 - 2002 - 2007
4.5 - 2008 - now
I play there. It's very competitive.
You play for a college?
Started August of 2008...
Probably high 4.0 -low 4.5 now...
Expecting to be 5.0-5.5 by August next year.
If you want to play or hit around there, I'm at the BerkeleyMarina most days and can hit most mornings. I need to find more players besides the RoseGarden, which kills my old van going down from there.
I'm not much of a weekend player, as I don't work during the week but do work every other Sat AM. Virginia and 7th is pretty good too.
I work at both the CalAdventures and the CalSailingClubs
