Zverev: Grass is not my favourite surface

"Let's be realistic: grass is not my favourite surface if you look at the past. Even though I had a very good draw here, Wimbledon is always tough for me. Especially if I play someone like Vesely in the first round, who serves very well, I thought returned extremely well today,” Zverev said. “It's never easy.”

He also talks about going through low confidence right now. Like his friend Dominic, Zverev also seems to prefer clay over grass. He's definitely done better on clay than grass in the past few years.

He's making so many excuses in that short paragraph that he really needs a better coach and team to encourage him. The only positive thing he said was that his tennis didn't let him down and that's true, he's still a good player but he has to stop thinking like it's karma against him that he missed a few BP and his opponent took the first one he got. That is tennis, every point is different. Stop whining and focus on the next point. If your opponent breaks, stop thinking about how he just needs to serve it out and start thinking how he might take his foot off the gas thinking he has a safety net. Positive thinking. Not excuses like you can't play on grass.

Guys, don't worry, he is only a teenager, give him time.

Oh wait, he is only 20, give him time.

Oh, he is 22. Well, he is progressing...

Oh, wait...

How old was Murray when he won his first Major ?

This guy is the biggest next-gen disappointment. Burned out. His game hasn't improved since he hired lendl. He needs a fresh perspective.

Lynch mobs as always. I don't like the guy at all, but he doesn't have to love playing on grass to please everyone. It's ok for him to have a preferred surface. Sheesh :D

He's stating the obvious. He's not suited to grass.

I think Zverev needs to take a week or two off, perhaps get a new coach, probably a sports psychologist, and just let it go a little bit imo.

would you accept to coach Z ?
what do you think a RR-coached Z would achieve ? :)

That boy is a mess.
The part I really don't get is his 'stupidity' if you wish. I hate to use that word but I just don't know what kinda a word to use. People are always joking about blonde girls. Well, now we got Zverev who is clueless. Sorry, didn't mean to offend anybody. I'm just joking ;).

LOL I don't think you offended anyone (but I'm not blonde). I don't know if it's stupidity, lack of common sense, a sheltered life that has left him emotionally stunted and immature or just flat-out willful ignorarance. His narcissism doesn't help.

Here's the difference between some spoiled, entitled brat like Zverev and his current coach, Ivan Lendl:

Lendl also had grass as his "least favorite" surface. He skipped Wimbledon, as did Agassi, because Lendl said he was "allergic to grass." But then he became a very fine grass court player, skipped the FO (after winning it three straight years and being the favorite there), to give himself a better chance at a Wimbledon title. He defeated both McEnroe and Becker at Queen's and made 4 Wimbledon semis and 2 finals. He completely changed his game and served/volleyed on nearly every single point. He failed in his quest to win Wimbledon, but he did everything he could to win there.

That's the difference between a champion and an irritating child like Zverev, who pouts when tournaments aren't handed to his pampered ass on a silver platter.

Exactly. It's not as if it's just Wimbledon, is it?

Monica Seles was 19 when she won her 8th major, and seemed unstoppable from winning lots more.

Back then so many teenagers were winning majors eg. Becker, Chang, Hingis, Graf, Sharapova. Times have changed. The last teenager to win a Major was Nadal way back at 2005 RG.

Sanchez Vicario. The French Open women's singles broke the youngest champion record with Sanchez Vicario in 1989, and then Seles in 1990. And of course, Capriati was 13 when she started on the tour in early 1990. Fast forward a few years and she was seen as a 17-year-old has been.

That was the day of teen phenoms, both on the mens and womens side. Steffi Graf completed the Calendar Grand Golden Slam at age 19. Chang, Wilander, Becker won slams at 17. Hingis was 1 match from the Grand Slam at age 16. Even more recently teenaged Nadal was winning RG titles and reached world #2. Those days are long gone these days.

Indeed, but not 8 majors at age 19 like Seles, though. Rather contrasts with the lost generation, and the new generation who have had a poor 2019 Wimbledon.

Men dominating as a teenager are MUCH less common than women, even in the old days. The physicality of the mens game is simply too much for a teenager to ever dominate. As Mary Carillo said in 1999 "girls can compete with women physically, boys cant compete with men physically". Today is another level entirely though.

Atleast the women have some slam winners in their young 20s now. The men dont have an active slam winner younger than 31 soon, and both nearly certain 1 slam wonders at that.

Carillo (and you) might care to explain how 17 year old boys like like Wilander, Becker and Chang won slams. How did 18 year old Borg and 19 year old Pete and Rafa win majors? If "boys can't compete with men physically" then explain how these "boys" managed it?

None of them were dominant though. Only girls can dominate as teenagers.

Andy was regularly winning everything but slams. And in slams he was getting to a lot of finals. He could win against anybody and each time he played anyone of the B3 it was a toss-up. It could go either way. The problem was that inadequate coaching... Should have hired Lends much earlier.
