McEnroe's Nightmare

Alright, for those of you too young to have seen everything but the forehand volley he pushed wide to lose the match, get ready.

The Tennis Channel is presenting, in full, the 1984 French Open Final between one John McEnroe and one Ivan Lendl. Yes, this is the match that was the biggest nightmare for John McEnroe in a year when he played like a dream.

It airs Monday night, 23APR07 at 9:00 CDT.

If you don't know who wins, I won't spoil it for you...

Gugafan_Redux 04-20-2007 06:18 AM

Cool. Thanks for the heads-up Rabbit.

Um, isn't that first line a spoiler?

To say nothing of the title McEnroe's Nightmare?

I have that match on DVD. It took me 5 months to watch it. I was afraid for John.

Actually, you did spoil it with your set up. But it's worthwhile viewing nonetheless.

If you don't know that Mac loses the '84 French Open then... did you hear about that 9/11 thing?

Nuke 04-20-2007 07:45 AM

If you think the results of the '84 French Open sticks in the mind like the 9/11 event, then you have a very warped mind.

Rabbit 04-20-2007 11:52 AM

Let me go on record right now as admitting that I screwed up. However, I should be shown some leniancy since some of the board members wouldn't have realized that McEnroe lost no matter what I posted.

It was 1984.
It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.

[Rabbit is sent to the TT Penalty Box. NOT for his Spoiler; but for mangling his literary references.]

Mangling? Mangling? Way harsh, dude (in the parlance of the times).

Moose Malloy 04-24-2007 10:13 AM

anyone watch it? they showed it in its entirety, even the post match interviews(Mac refused to address the crowd during the ceremony) Great match, great drama, truly deserving of 'classic' status. they are repeating it tomorrow as well.

Nuke 04-24-2007 10:18 AM

So, who won? :)

Moose Malloy 04-24-2007 10:43 AM

I also thought it was interesting when the commentators mentioned Mac's 42 match win streak, they said that Vilas holds the record with 50(not the 46 that the atp said Vilas had when Federer was getting close earlier this year)

Interesting sport, in that they apparently can revise history many years later.

diredesire 04-24-2007 11:01 AM

stormholloway: that comparison is offensive to some... just thought you might like to know why your post is now gone

stormholloway 04-24-2007 12:30 PM

Not really concerned.

This thread should be moved to the 'Match Results' section immediately!
There is no statute of limitations on Match Results - 23 minutes, or 23 years - it matters not.

By the way, for those of you wishing to know more about McEnroe's magical year of 1984, I believe that George Orwell wrote a book about it.
