50 Year Old, Columbia, SC T-ments

Looking for age group tournaments in the Columbia, SC area. I have never been there but will be there for 7 weeks. Advise as to what clubs have clay courts to play on. I have looked on the USTA sites, but not exactly sure how far these clubs are from Fort Jackson, SC. Let me know.

Topspin Racquet Club has a good rep.
Also try looking at the USTA web site for local league coordinator for Columbia, SC. He will know all the local info.
I went through Basic in 85 at Ft. Jackson in new Hollywood. Had to run up and down Tank Hill going to and from the rifle ranges.
Good luck,
Robby C

Best part of going back to basic training as a civilian is NO PT!!!

I am not looking for a league to paly in. I really would like to find 4-5 hitting partners that know their way around. USTA is not my cup of tea, I prefer a tournament situation.

Hi Mike. I don't know which seven weeks you're going to be there, so I can't recommend specific tournaments. The nearest private club is http://rockbridgeclub.com. They have a lot of clay courts. There are neaby public courts at Parklane (Richland County Tennis Center) and SouthEast Park (Hazelwood Rd.). The latter has six brand new clay courts---and it's free to the general public.

I will be there begining on 7 April. Look forward to playing in warmer climates, as we are currently experiencing snow.

Ah yes Carolina in the springtime.

I don't know how far you are willing to travel for tournaments but there's a nice tourney coming up in Myrtle Beach the 18th-20th of April at Prestwick Country Club. I think that's about 2 1/2 hours or so from Columbia.

Here is a link to SC's tournaments in April: http://tennislink.usta.com/tournamen...ri+Mar+14+2008

Note: this is only the USTA-sanctioned events.

That link didn't quite get you to April, just click on "April" etc. on top

Thanks for the great advice, not sure that I can carry off 2.5 hours, I will be taking Army courses and if I am scheduled to play Friday evening the Army would frown on me asking to leave or just leaving early. Was hoping that there might be a tournament within an hour to 90 minute drive. Are any of you near to the Columbia area? I am looki g for 3.5+ players to hit with. I enjoy working on my game, hitting a ton of balls and playing out points. I would be very interested in playing on clay, as here in the Pacific Northwest we have no access to clay.

Will you be there this year? I have played there the past several years and really enjoyed it. This one is my favorite tournament and I am looking forward to it again this year.

I'll be there, I haven't had the chance to play it before but a couple of friends have and really enjoyed it.

I am a weak 3.5; I do spend some time on that side of town.

You need to check out South East Park. Free clay, dude.

tennismike33 04-05-2008 09:03 AM

Good morning, I have checked it out, looks like a great facility. Dude, I can travel, so if any of your friends want to get together for a few hours, I am willing to travel. I should be available after 6pm on weeknights and all day Saturday and Sunday. I love working on my game and hitting a ton of balls, playing on clay is something I look forward to, as we have no access here in the Pac NW.

BTW....I need a couple of rackets strung up when I get there, is there a good tennis shop close by Ft Jackson???????

Yes, but PT will help your tennis tremendously!

I spend time in the gym right now and do a little cardio to go along with it as well.
