Confused about grips?
How do you know which ones are overgrips and which ones are regular grips? Like I looked at Tournagrip at Dick's and I thought it was a regular grip and it said that it was an overgrip.
Also, what about the ones that don't even say whether they are an overgrip or a regular grip? Do most people use an overgrip over their regular one or do they use a complete new regular grip that they replaced for the one on their racquet? |
(1) Overgrips are alot thinner and usually come three per pack.
(2) Replacement grips usually come one per pack and have glue on one side. Also thicker. Most players use overgrips as they are cheaper and easier to replace then normal grips. Saves time and money. |
I would recommend you try using the regular grip that came with your racquet and then getting a thin overgrip such as Wilson Pro Overgrip to experiment with. Be careful some of the overgrips are actually quite thick, and it can dramatically change the shape and size of the grip.

So Tournagrip is an overgrip? Do a lot of you use it?
|
Yes it is very popular. If you watch Tennis on TV many Pros use it too.

Tournagrip is actually one of the best overgrips out there for heavy sweaters. It absorbs sweat as no other.
Overgrips can be divided into two main categories: the absorbent ones and the tacky ones. You need to find which one you need and the right overgrip that satisfies your needs. For example, I need the most tacky and thin ones, so I'm using Gamma Dermagrip. |

replacement grips / main grips have adhesive on the whole tape. whereas overgrips only have a small adhesive at the tapered end. not too sure if you can spot it if they are in a seal packaging. nevertheless, overgrips are generally way much cheaper than replacement grip. there are guys who hit with a single overgrip and no main grip under it (or just 2 overgrips). all about preference. i play with a tw leather grip as base with a single overgrip. i use white overgrips so they can remind me to change them when they give me the "dirty look" lol |
