Surely Wawrinka has the best 1hbh in the mens game...

After watching his performance against Murray, it has to be the most offensive 1hbh in the mens game...Great at slice, passing shots and has the ability to step in and hit above waist height balls for winners. Wawrinka was generating way more pace off the backhand than Murray, who himself dictates most players with his 2hbh.

One of the many amazing bh's he hit in the match against Murrry. (1.12)

gasquet, federer, arguably better

SLD76 09-06-2010 08:48 PM

I'll take GAsquet for 500, Alex

There is this guy called Federer.
Another one called Almagro

Defcon 09-06-2010 08:56 PM

Gaudio, Pavel, Haas, there are many who can crush a 1 hander. But lack variety.

skip1969 09-06-2010 08:57 PM

i like it. but gasquet's is sweet . . . when he isn't standing 5,000 feet behind the baseline and is actually taking a cut at the ball.

Defcon 09-06-2010 08:59 PM

Also OP your namesake wasn't bad :)

I was mightily impressed by that shot... Wawrinka was really playing above himself though. I think he'll lose to Querrey.

toddrobert38 09-06-2010 09:04 PM

Gasquet, Wawrinka, Montanes

SLD76 09-06-2010 09:04 PM

it will truly be an epic battle...of men with horrible skin.

My money is on Querry. Bad skin aside, Stan is at least cute.

Gugafan 09-06-2010 09:05 PM

Almagro and Haas have a quality 1hbh but nowhere near as good as Wawrinka. Gasquet has a great one hander, but to me he struggles against high balls and retreats too far behind the baseline. He's DTL is a killer though. Wawrinka's rally ball is just abit more penetrating and flatter.

Someone needs to upload the full highlights reel from the match against Murray.

Top 3 (active players):
1.Wawrinka
2.Gasquet
3.Youzhny/Federer

I agree that the Wawrinka BH is very impressive. Still would give the blue ribbon ro Gasquet tho' -- his BH is downright magical.

Gasquet takes such a huge swing and has such a big windup that his backhand is very inconsistent compared to Wawrinka. If I had to choose it's Wawrinka; steadier, more consistent in rallies, and just as good in terms of pace and placement. Gasquet may be able to do a few more tricky shots with his backhand, but I think Wawrinka drives it alot better consistently.

Dudi Sela's 1hbh is really nice too. He's fearless with that thing.

chaddles 09-06-2010 10:49 PM

There is no greater site in tennis than someone playing a full blooded 1 hand back hand (aka real man's backhand). The most impressive match for a 1hbh I have seen would have to be Almagro v Nadal in a final earlier this year - Almagro won the first set and just smashed winners of the back hand so easily.

Federer's isn't far behind, especially the angled flick he loves to do... very niiice.

Feņa14 09-06-2010 11:07 PM

For me, Calleri used to have the best. I'd agree with you and say Wawrinka is the best these days.

Solomnstr 09-07-2010 12:05 AM

Yeah. I wanna say his is the best. Sure there are guys that can hit it harder. But since when does that mean everything in tennis? Wawrinka has the best balance of power, consistency and variety.

jerriy 09-07-2010 12:16 AM

I'd kill to see a match between each other (the three of them: Almagro, Gasquet, Wawrinka)

Federer has gone way down imo, even below Youzhny!

Nowadays a Federer topspin/flat backhand opener or winner has become so rare and exotic that you might as well put it up on the list of endangered stroke-species.

Wawa rocks ... but on a good day Kohl, Magro ... can be good. I've even once seen Robredo (against Kolya) hitting very well.
