Rivalries at all 4 Slams
 

How many rivalries cover all the bases, with meetings at all four Slams?

Sampras and Agassi met at all four. So did Lendl and McEnroe.

Some others that are missing a "leg":

Wilander and Lendl never met at Wimbledon.

Becker and Lendl never met at RG.

Rosewall and Laver never met at AO or USO.

Borg and Connors never met at AO or FO. Same was true for Borg and McEnroe.

Becker and Edberg never met at AO or USO.

Federer and Nadal have still not met at the USO.

And so on.

I don't have time to check but I would guess that Roy Emerson and some players like Fred Stolle or Cliff Drysdales may have met at all the majors.

It's tough for players like Laver and Rosewall because they weren't originally playing the majors at the same time as amateurs and their were so many boycotts when Open tennis started.

True about Laver and Rosewall. They never met at AO and USO, for example, but they only ever played two AO's in common (1969 and '71, which were the two AO's in the early Open Era in which most of the top players were able to participate without political or other problems intervening).

Edit: and yet the only two times in their entire careers that Laver and Rosewall both played at Roland Garros were 1968-69. And they met in the final both years, so go figure.

Courier and Edberg met at all 4 slams too. Courier won 4 of their 6 slam matches.

I thought maybe Lendl and Edberg, but they never met at RG.

Federer has never beaten Roddick or Hewitt at RG. Never beaten Davydenko at Wimbledon. Not that interesting as rivalries but I'm just wondering who Federer has met at all four Slams.

Court and Goolagong, I just thought of them because they obviously played the AO a lot, and met a couple of times there. But never met at RG.

Similarly Court and King met everywhere but RG.

King and Goolagong met everywhere but AO.

for the men:

nadal hasn't played djokovic at the australian open
federer hasn't played djokovic at roland garros

Jimmy Connors played his good friend Vitas Gerulaitis in the R16 at the 76 US Open, and then in the '80 Wimbledon SF and in the '80 French Open SF. Yet, they didn't play at the Australian Open. Connors only played there in '73 and '74. Connors lost to Newcombe in the '74 AO final.

Navratilova never met Graf at Australia, Evert never saw Goolagong at RG, or Hana at Australia But Chris met Steffi at all 4.

Margaret Court and Maria Bueno met at all four majors.

Sampras and Michael Chang met at all four majors.

Sampras and Todd Martin met at all four majors.

Probably the majority of the names will be in the last 25 or so years since players started playing all four majors around then.

But their USO meeting was a walkover.

They had 1 meeting at each of the other three (85 RG, 88 AO, 89 W).

Seems that Sampras is involved in more of these than anybody else.

Of course you are right! And Chris never met Court at Australia but played her at all three other venues in 1973 - and lost two of them!

Was just looking up Vitas' record at the AO. It seems he never won any matches there except the year he won the title, 1977. He also played in 1980, 83 and 84, but each time he lost the first match he played (which was sometimes the second round, after receiving a bye in the first).

So Connors and Gerulaitis are just missing the AO meeting. Same was true with Connors-McEnroe, Connors-Lendl, and Borg-Gerulaitis.

Minor correction: Jimmy and Vitas played at Wimbledon in '78.
