Basel Open 2011

Basel starts in a few days, and the field looks really good(even better than Shanghai). Wild Cards are given to Murray, Young and Nishikori. Djokovic, Federer and Fish are in. Youzhny, Wawrinka, Roddick, Troicki, Tipsarevic, Llodra, Gasquet, Berdych and Baghdatis are just a few more names. IMO the tourney should count as a MS1000.

It does seem a bit odd that a 500 event like Basel has attracted all this attention. It seems to be a bit like Queens which, although only a 250 event, usually attracts lots of top players lumbering up for Wimbledon. Maybe Nadal should do the decent thing and play Valencia to balance things out a little between the two tourneys or would Ferrer and co rather he stayed away?

Valencia has far more depth. The last non-commitment direct entry at Valencia was #40, the last direct entry at Basel was #51. Basel is nowhere near the quality of any MS1000.

And Valencia is fine without Nadal.

I can hardly wait for this tournament to start.

Well saying is nowhere near the quality of a MS1000 is ridiculous. It`s not like this field is much weaker then the Shanghai event. Also this tourney is a better way to prepare for the WTF then Valencia for the top players as the conditions and the balls are similar to London.

It's a treat to have BOTH strong fields in the same week...almost like a major w/o easy early rounds...will be tricky for the elites coming off long layovers.

nadalwon2012 10-29-2011 01:32 AM

What does the draw say, can I be told who meets whom at the semi-final stage?

batz 10-29-2011 07:28 AM

Djokovic's draw:
R1: Mallise
R2: Qualifier
QF: Troicki/Youzhny
SF: Fish
F: Murray/Federer

Murray's draw:
R1: Haase
R2: Wawrinka
QF: Tipsarevic
SF: Federer
F: Djokovic

Federer's draw:
R1: Starace
R2: Bellucci/Nieminem
QF: Roddick
SF: Murray
F: Djokovic

Murray has the hardest draw, hands down.

I assume from this that Murray is seeded #2?

But as Roger usually falls in Novak's half of the draw, this would seem to put an end to the conspiracy theories!

Lol poor Muzz, somewhat ridic draw.

I don't think that debate will end till the Australian open draw is announced next year.

nadalwon2012 10-29-2011 09:09 AM

Federer is in Murray's side because Nadal is not in the draw, simple as that.

jones101 10-29-2011 11:12 AM

Roger will take no prisoners and will defend his beloved Basel crown. Djoker beware and Muzzard be scared!

I agree with you Federer is my pick to win this week as well, he is rested and fresh and hungry as ever for another title with strong competetion, that too in front of his home crowd! tough to see past him this week!

Yep, he could very well go home after any match as of R2!

If Murray can get through that test of Haase/Wawrinka etc I could see him showing another GOAT'ing 6-0 set display.

**IF** he gets through the matches first...

LetsGoRoddick 10-29-2011 03:03 PM

Roddick still plays basel? -_-

Djoko is the STRONG favorite easily. I dunno on what planet Fed (or anyone else) can be favored over Djoko in any tournament.

For heaven's sake, the guy has lost 3 matches in a year, and 2 were because of injury..
