Wawrinka is a top 10 player...

No way should this guy be outside the top 20. He dismantled players ranked higher than him like Almagro and Tipsarevic (during current claycourt swing), also played Del Potro, Djokovic and Nadal and was able to stay at the level of the top guys for most of the match.

Some people compare him to Gasquet, but you almost no what to expect with Gasquet when he plays the top guys. He just doesn't have the necessary firepower that Wawrinka has in the locker.....I hope he continues this recent good run of form, and can return back inside the top 10.

Has to be the most dangerous player outside the top 20, that could be a threat to higher seeds at the French.

Well, the top 10 only contains 10 slots, but people seem to claim at any given time that there are about 20 players that ought to be in the top 10 due to having top 10 talent. But really, you have Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Murray, Ferrer, Tsonga, Berdych, and Del Potro, all players with top 10 talent or more. Now there are only 2 slots left. You can't put everyone ranked from 9-22 there, and I don't see Wawrinka as the best player from 9-22. Everyone in the top 25 has the weapons and talent to be in the top 10. Gasquet can hit 110 mph forehands on occasion, and so can Monfils, Verdasco, Dolgo, Raonic, Isner, Almagro, Wawrinka, etc. But the difference in getting to the top top is mental strength and knowing when to take your risks. That's not something I see in Waw, unfortunately.

Top Ten on Clay but elsewhere top 25!

I hope he gets back up there soon! Love watching him play. Should make the quarters in Rome. Dangerous mid-seed for Roland Garros. I can't really see him taking out any of the top three, but could pose problems for Murray or any other top player.

I like him a lot, and have been paying attention to him for a longtime... like his low profile personality too, really hope he can be back on top 10 soon...

Maybe yonex is doing him right. I've noticed more consistency and he seems to be playing much better than previous years, even when he was ranked higher.

sandiegoman 05-16-2012 11:09 PM

love watching him play too. he has one of the best backhands in tennis and can blast through Gasquet

Shasha 05-16-2012 11:09 PM

Agree, his game is so sweet, love that backhand, hes so complete.

BreakPoint 05-17-2012 10:21 AM

Hmmmm.....maybe not.

Breaker 05-17-2012 10:25 AM

He also got beaten down easily by Almagro at the Aussie Open, too inconsistent.

Its all between the ears with wawrinka.

3 titles in his carrer is a poor return, i agree he should be top 10.

Epic meltdown against Seppi...6-3 up in the final set TB, and a couple of horrible UE. Pretty much sums up why he's not top 10. Buckles far too easily under pressure.

Also serving for the match at 5-3 in the 3rd set and got broken. Had a total of 6 match points that he couldn't convert. :(

Yes, he has "top ten talent", meaning that his peak level of play can, at times, beat players who are in the Top 10.

But, it's not just about peak level of play, it's about how consistently a player can reach that level, reliably produce that level. Wawrinka has not shown that he can do it enough to be a consistent Top 10 player. Close, but not quite enough.

I'd also argue, that maybe we shouldn't even consider "peak" level. I mean, there are guys outside the top 30 or even 40 who can be "on" and pull upsets of top players. A true top 10 player will have a less-than-peak level that enables him to be a top 10 player, so at 75-85 percent of their best tennis, they are still beating most of the players below them and having quailty wins over other top players.

latetennisstarter 05-17-2012 01:16 PM

Outside the top 10 mentally for sure...

augustobt 05-17-2012 01:32 PM

Wawrinka on 2nd set tie-break, Seppi serving in 5-6, and then Stan starts to ironize the italian fans. As expected, he trew away the point, and then the set.

On 3rd, Serving in 5-3, 40-15, a couple of stupid unforced errors and then broken. Tie-break, 6-3 up. Guess what? 3 unforced errors. And then, on the first seppi's match point, he trew a backhand on the net.

This guy is terrible. Plays good then plays crap. Fiasco v2.0 (except v man is more talented)

sandiegoman 05-17-2012 10:05 PM

Federer always makes him cry when they play.

MAXXply 05-17-2012 11:56 PM

Wow, I'm kicking myself I switched off the TV and went to bed at 3-2 in the final set:(

There's some other clay court specialists that can be dangerous. And every year it seems like the French Open is that tournament that has way more upsets than any other Major.

Wawrinka has the talent to be a top 10 player, but not the mental tenacity. He folds under pressure big time. As indicated by his latest choke job against Seppi. Served for the match @ 5-3, and had match points, blew those then got broken. Then he lead 6-3 in the breaker, and he blew 3 more match points, eventually losing..
