Do you think Federer apparel will rise in value after his retirement?
I mean once he retires (not saying it's anytime soon), I guess Nike won't make anymore clothing specifically for him, so what's already out there will be it. So do you think his apparel (classic polos, new or used) will go up in value after his retirement, or will it decline?
|
No, not really. Thats kind of like asking if a PDR will be worth more.

If fed can find some marketing guru to manage his line and wants to do some bussiness for his own line, Nike might continue to make fed lines like Jordan brand. I think there is a possibility.
Nike knows whatever they put "RF" logo, it sells ^_^. This matter might be another long discussion though. Anyway, I don't think value will go up that much in my opinion. As soon as fed announce his retirement, several items might go up but after a month, every items start to decline. I understand several Agassi shirts are selling high nowadays but Since fed items were massive productions and many people bought more than one. Also 10-20 years later, we might see another tennis star ^_^. |
Some stuff definitely will. If 20 year old Agassi gear can go for prices in the hundreds daily on the bay so can Federer gear.

I might be willing to pay good money for Fed gear - if only I knew what it looked like. The way current day tennis apparel is so generically styled, I'd be hard pressed to associate certain lines with certain pros. I'd much rather pay the same high dollar for an instantly recogniseable design (anything 80s, anything Challenge Court) than a monotone Dri-Fit shirt with a hokey 'RF' printed on the bottom of the placket.
Can you remember the exact design Fed wore at FO '04? Or recall what shirt Rafa wore at USO '06? Nope, neither can I. |

Heard an interview from Federer saying that he wants to continue the brand with Nike well after he has retired. He mentioned that he wanted to create a legacy just like the Jordan brand has.

and RAFA the wreak havoc shirt BOOM!!! I'm already starting my collection http://www.flickr.com/photos/68004209@N06/ |
Absolutely. Classic shirts.

If anything is starting to be collectible Nike would quickly retro them and re-release. Some of the Fed stuff would be for memorabilia but I doubt they would go up in value by a big margin. A lot of the "seamless" shirt would simple fall apart. And any slikscreen decal would also chip and break over time. I got soccer shirts from 1998-1999 are already doing that.

Keep it new, keep it mint. Exactly why you buy two of every shirt, one to wear, one to collect.

Yeah the RF 287 shoes prices will be astronomical, oh wait they already are.

^ I know, I should have bought one, I mean hello retirement fund.

In 20 years there will be a vintage Federer collection, just like there is for Borg with Fila. That being said the value of current, used shirts won't be there.
