Finances for Teams Going to Nationals
Since the various National Championships are right around the corner, it got me thinking, what kind of financial assistance do Districts and/or Sections give to their teams that have qualified?
It seems like they would help out some since there's only two teams (men and women) per Section per rating level. I can't imagine any individual District having more than a couple of teams qualify either. Is the amount each District/Section gives to their teams standard or does it vary? How much is typical? Team entry fees are what, like $500? If a team is taking say 10 guys and you account for 10 plane tickets, 3 nights per person at a hotel, and rental cars then I am sure the costs can get pretty high. It'd be nice if each team got at least a few hundred bucks per person or maybe either their airfare or hotels reimbursed but I highly doubt that is the case. Wouldn't it be a nice reward for Sectional Champions to have at least 50% of their trip covered? I bet the USTA could afford it. |
Yes, funding would be nice. Not gonna happen.
My 3.5 senior ladies team did a bunch of fundraising. This included shaking down friends and family, selling food and drink at Districts, and raffelling off a donated racket. Most of the money raised came from gifts, $20 here and there. There were ten of us, so we rented two houses and two vans. When all of the fundraising was split equally, each player owed $200 toward the house and vans, plus her own food and airfare. Not bad. Staying at the host hotel would have cost way, way more. |
From my recollection, our section pays the entry fee, which I think this year is $550 plus some fee? Travel expenses are not covered in any way.

Our section pays our entry fee depending on what it is. I believe adult gets covered 100% while senior mixed gets only 50%.
As someone else said, I believe this amount is $500 or $550. It comes out to about $50 per person. Travel, car, hotel are not covered. |
the local team advanced to nationals last year and I believed was offered 2000 for the team from USTA. Not much when you have like 15 guys on the team. What they did was they organized a one day fundraising tournament at our local courts for 50 dollars a person. Actually had a good turnout as everyone was there to support them. Had a lot of donations for food and beer which made the day very memorable.
