Question about Pistol Pete's game.

How often did Pete Sampras use drop shots? Was it a shot that Pete avoided hitting his entire career?

Never ever seen Sampras hitting a drop shot in my entire life

Pete hits lots of drop shots when he is close to the net.

Never see him hitting drop shots from the baseline.

Pete could do just about anything with a ball. He hit quite a few efficient short-angled volleys and dropvolleys.

As for dropshots, he did approach with the dropper on occasion. He did not drop shot from the baseline much at all, as far as I remember.

Those of us who knew him and knew of him in jrs, then as a young pro know what kind of touch the guy had/has. He used the big, effective stuff more, to be sure.

I remember thinking of him as a nice blend of Lendl and Mac, with some Becker for good measure.

I posted these in the thread that was "Better Backhand Fed vs Pete" when some other poster said that Pete couldn't even fathom hitting a dropshot

Pete was hitting drops 10 years into retirement???

Just for kicks, here is Pete hitting the forehand drop shot, which you have seen Federer utilize in the latter stages of his career, especially in his victory at the French. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_f9LwxurHg#t=1m47s

*edit* Apparently some of the clips have been removed, hmmmm I'll try to re-find the clips. I took these links directly from that other thread I mentioned earlier

Exhibition doesn't say much.

That's like looking for dropshot in the senior tour and compare to pro who actually played in the real match. Big LOL

TMF, you certainly choose to respond to certain parts of a post.

Nevermind the other clips from his pro career, and how I posted an *edit* note saying the clips were removed from youtube, and I will try to find them again.

Pete hit dropshots from near the baseline. Occasionally, yes, but he did on both sides.
Obviously, drop volleys and short angles all the time.
Never a drop shot overhead or drop shot serve.

of course the ones that didn't make it over the net, are not highlight material, but this sure shows he had the option available off both wings. That some folks did not remember him trying many, probably shows prudent restraint suggesting discipline. Can't imagine a player of his caliber, not having one in the bag-o-tricks.

watching those vids, pete had the weirdest topspin backhand of the modern era..

it's because he didn't always get a full shoulder-turn and fought off quite a few from a pretty open stance with a bent-ish elbow. having the world's heaviest racket helped with that. he could rip it when he was in position though.

Pete hit a dropper? Hmmm...interesting. I do know he could half-volley with stunning pace and depth!

Why you so much against Pete? If I may ask? For me, both play similar and are faves. Pete is one of my fave players
